A continuation from a previous blog of mine, where I posted the evidence that Gurren Lagann's cosmology is not only a universe, but a vast macrocosmos of every possible multiverse along an infinite chain of universes. For more on the scale of the macrocosmos and feats, please see there. However, there are several major points that people use to downplay Gurren Lagann; the Spiral Nemesis threatening the universe, how can the Anti-Spiral create a multiverse if they where afraid of the destruction of a universe and Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann being hurt by a Big Bang level attack. I will debunk all of these in this blog, as well as describe the nature of the cosmology and the scale of the feats in the series.

First off, the Spiral Nemesis. This is used as one of the key points to claim the Anti-Spiral isn't multiversal. However, let's have a closer look;
Spoiler:

Gurren Lagann said:
The Anti-Spiral: Then watch. Watch where this universe is headed. See the universe destroyed by the power of the Spiral, which thinks only of evolving.

Spiral Power is the force which binds together lifeforms and the universe. The growth of galaxies is proportional to the growth of life. Life developed in search of forms that would help it acquire...even more power of the Spiral. This is evolution.

But the end result would be a loss of control over their Spiral Power, and all life becoming its own galaxy. These mega galaxies would then devour each other, forming a black hole, and then this universe would return to nothingness. This is the Spiral Nemesis.
Please note the terminology used by the Anti-Spiral during this sequence;

Gurren Lagann said:

This universe. The thing about that is the Anti-Spiral are very explicitly in a different universe to the main one; the one Simon and Team Super Galaxy Dai-Gurren originate from and the Anti-Spiral's pocket universe.
Spoiler:

So going from the show alone, we already have the Anti-Spiral fighting to prevent the Spiral Nemesis in multiple universes. Said Anti-Spiral dimension exists beyond "the" multiverse as a whole.

Indeed, there are actually several universes Team Super Galaxy Dai-Gurren come from. When asked how Rossiu found LordGenome's head, Kazuki Nakashima begins by saying how there's a different version of how this happened in the DVD commentary and the novelization, and finishes by saying that as there are different versions that are prefered, as Gurren Lagann is the story of a multiverse, the version you, the viewer, prefers, can be the right one.

`Next. "When did Rosiu discover LordGenome?"
Nakajima Oh, that is written in a novel. I explained it in the DVD audio commentary, but that is a lie (laughs). Novels are sold by mail, so those who like logic is there, and those who like interesting are the DVD version. Because Gurren Lagann is a story of a multiverse, the Gurren Lagann you believe in is real!
Though a lot of the above is from a machine translation, the following sentence;

I got someone who speaks Japanese to translate. So, there are different parallel universes, even outside the Anti-Spiral Labyrinth. In the movies, we have a shot of the macrocosmos at the start of the first movie...
...and this same macrocosmos when Team Dai-Gurren is escaping "the" multiverse.
Note please that LordGenome ponders what the Universe is with a shot of the multiverse, this will be important later. In relation to the first gif posted above;

Infinitely expanding macrocosmos
So the macrocosmos, or "the" multiverse is infinite, and exists naturally. As for how this relates to the Anti-Spiral, by manipulating probability, dimensions and the fabric of space-time the Anti-Spiral set up the Multiversal Labyrinth from the pre-existing multiverses, where Universe branches infinitely into infinite more universes, and those into infinite more universes, and so on forever.

Simon's multiverse (jewelry store) The showcase is where Simon is trapped in the "Multiversal Labyrinth," which was set up by the Anti-Spiral. Lined with goods from team Dai-Gurren such as Yoko's Valletta.
As said above, the Anti-Spiral do this by controlling the multiple dimensions.

Simon's greatest enemy is this universe itself. Even before Simon, when a number of spiral warriors challenged Anti-Spiral, they are buried away. Its appearance has no distinct entity, transcending space and time lightly and controlling the multiple dimensions.
Now we'll leave the Labyrinth for a bit and go back to explain all this, and the basis on how Gurren Lagann's cosmology works. One of the most important descriptions of Gurren Lagann's cosmology comes from episode 23, when we are introduced to the Quantum Universe Theory.
Spoiler:

Gurren Lagann said:
LordGenome: How could we have been so blind? They eluded our super-Spiral
scan sweeps by creating an imaginary oscillating time-space located between the membranes of the dimensional universes we call the 10th and 11th dimensions.

Leeron: I'm sorry, boys. I can't make heads or tails of it, either. But this is definitely the Anti-Spiral homeworld.

How can you tell?

Simon: That's... her ring!

Rosiou: But why?

LordGenome: What we call the universe is constructed on ambiguity. It only becomes a fixed reality when observed. That is a fundamental law of the universe. Even in a pocket universe, an object that has been observed at one time can be picked up on a Spiral scan.

Rosiou: Maybe this is related to the quantum universe theory...
This sets up some very important frames of how the cosmos works in Gurren Lagann. LordGenomes states what we call the universe, which is very important phrasing, "what we call the universe", not just "the universe," implying directly the cosmos is more than just one universe. Infact, he goes on to explain that these laws also apply in a pocket universe, as well as the 11 dimensional universes.

Though the movie gives an abridged version of this speech, it is in a way even better, as its said whilst travelling between universes.
Spoiler:

As for the laws in question, he says that the Universe is constructed on ambiguity, and only becomes fixed when observed. This is alluded to through the Ashtanga's attacks, where they can perform Schrodinger Warps to attack along the time axis through multiple dimensions, existing everywhere and nowhere at once in local space-time (for more on the Schrodinger Warp and the Maelstrom Vortex Cannon, see here).

Then the Anti-Spiral throws the humans into the Labyrinth, a causal trap in which they are trapped in between dimensions, forced to observe all possible universes simultaneously as they are created instant to instant.
Spoiler:

Gurren Lagann said:
The Anti-Spiral: They are all being held prisoner in extradimensional space. They are trapped in a series of universes that are created instant to instant as they are perceived.
The universes are created instant to instant as they are perceived. This is in line with what LordGenome said earlier about the Universe existing in a state of uncertainty, and becoming a fixed reality when observed.

The Anti-Spiral soon after follows up with this;
Spoiler:

Gurren Lagann said:
The Anti-Spiral: The instant extradimensional space is perceived, it is made real.
On top of everything already said, the multiverse is very explicitly real, and the reason that Team Super Galaxy Dai-Gurren are in the bridge of Super Galaxy Dai-Gurren is firstly because they are trapped in extra-dimensional space (as said above), and secondly because their awareness is forced to perceive the different possibilities.
Spoiler:

There is no evidence of any kind that the multiverse is an illusion, and there is evidence from every source to the direct contrary.

With all that out of the way, we can clearly see the context of the term "universe" being interchangable with "cosmos," or "everything." Ergo, it is not contradictory that the Anti-Spiral would be able to control the multiverse, or that they would be afraid of the Spiral Nemesis.

Simon escapes the Labyrinth by merging together infinite alternate versions of himself together.
Spoiler:

Simon not only merges with all iterations from every possible universe, but every possible multiverse.

A drill appears from there. The drill rotates rapidly. The drill swallows the Simon from the original universe, turning into a vortex of light.
"Go Simon, bro."
In that glow, Simon transforms into the figure of Gurren Lagann and flies into the sky.
After escaping the Multiversal Labyrinth, Simon creates the galaxy-sized Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, which creates the Super Spiral Space inside it.

The possibility of existence of Gurren Lagann in the multiverse materializes, and combines with Simon's Gurren Lagann. This is the ultimate evolution of Gurren Lagann.
During the series, there are infinite Simons, infinite Gurren Laganns, but during the final battle, there is only one Simon in one Gurren Lagann against one Anti-Spiral.

Backing up all of the above, in an interview about how the time travel works in Batman Ninja, Nakashima says that thanks to the multiverse, rather than travelling back to the same timeline, Batman travels to another timeline. He then goes on to describe the multiverse and the changing perception of time, from 4 dimensions to 11. The interviewer then asks about the quantum cosmology mentioned in Gurren Lagann. To this, Nakashima says at the time of writing Gurren Lagann he was reading up on astrophysics, and how universes become real when observed, and he sent this idea to Gainax. This not only backs up further that Gurren Lagann is a multiverse, but also that the multiverse in Gurren Lagann is based off real theoretical quantum physics.

"Ninja Batman" is a so-called "time thing" that Batman is blown away during the Warring States period. In the case of Japanese animation, there is a restriction that "the present changes when the past is changed", and I think that it tends to be very cautious if it is time-based or time-based. I'm doing it without worrying about that.

Nakajima: Because it's American comic. In American comics, the multiverse, that is, the setting of the world view that the universe is full, is pervading readers. And now, time-varying things become multi-dimensional universes. It means that there is a universe of all possibilities, so whatever you do, it will be "this universe" (laughs). It has been said that the interpretation of the multiverse has progressed in recent decades, and that we were four-dimensional when we were children, now it is 11-dimensional. Since it is a job to tell a lie here, I turn such theory into a twist and roll it to an interesting person.

Speaking of "Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann" (hereinafter "Gurren Lagann"), there was a talk of "quantum cosmology that exists by being observed".

Nakajima: At that time, when I studied cosmology, I realized that I was very advanced because I had not read it for a while. Given the theory that it will be decided only if it is observed, it is set that there is a universe that can be recognized.
Last, but not least, there is the description of the Quantum Universe Theory from the Gurren Lagann glossary in Final Drill.

A theory of the cosmos explained from the standpoint of quantum mechanics. Analyzing everything from nothing to the probabilistic interpretation of the whole universe by dealing with the microcosmos immediately after the birth of the universe.
This connects the Quantum Universe Theory, which entails infinite branching multiverses, back to the Big Bang.

The Anti-Spiral throws an attack equivalent to the Big Bang at Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. Which they withstand for several minutes.
On another note like this, though most theories of the Big Bang state the Big Bang created the universe, there are some that entail that it created a multiverse.

So in conclusion, Gurren Lagann having multiversal feats, and even feats beyond multiversal, are not contradictory as previously believed, but perfectly consistent with what has been set up in both the series and the supplimentary materials.

To reiterate on my argument...
  • The Universe (which is interchangable with multiverse, cosmos or macrocosmos) exists in a state of quantum uncertainty, with all possibilities existing in a schrodinger state until observed
  • Observing reality fixes it in place along the timeline
  • Time exists across at least 11 dimensional universes
  • A possibility that isn't observed in one universe becomes observed in another; this is "the" Multiverse
  • The macrocosmos branches infinitely into every possible multiverse along the infinite chain
  • All of these possibilities where created by the Big Bang
  • The Anti-Spiral's penultimate attack is on par with the Big Bang
  • The Anti-Spiral's pocket universe exists beyond the multiverse, where they fight to stop the Spiral Nemesis from destroying everything
  • The Anti-Spiral transcend space, time and gravity, and can control physics and probability
  • The Anti-Spiral did not create the multiverse, but by controlling probability and dimensions they were able to set up the Labyrinth
  • Simon broke free of causality by merging every possible version of himself from every possible multiverse
  • Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is the Super Spiral Space, which was created by merging all possible Gurren Lagann's together
