A gunman killed 12 people, including a sheriff’s deputy, when he walked into a Southern California bar and grill and started shooting on Wednesday night, police said.

The gunman was also killed, Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean told a news conference on Thursday, though it was not immediately clear by whom.

An unknown number of people were also wounded during the attack at the Borderline Bar and Grill, a Country & Western venue in the Los Angeles suburb of Thousand Oaks where a crowd had gathered for a night of dancing, drinking and eating.

“It’s a horrific scene in there,” Dean said. “There is blood everywhere and the suspect is part of that.”

The sheriff’s deputy who died was identified as Sgt. Ron Helus, a 29-year-veteran of the department, Dean said.

No other victims were identified. The sheriff said the gunman has not been identified and there was no known motive for the shooting.

Accounts about the incident varied widely throughout the early morning hours with initial reports saying the suspect was in custody. But Sheriff Dean has since said that the gunman died at the scene.

Some social media accounts said a bearded man wearing a dark trenchcoat walked in and started shooting.

Witnesses told CNN that patrons were there for the “College Country” night with line-dancing, music, drinks and food, and the place was packed with a young crowd.

When the shots started, some people smashed windows with chairs to escape, witnesses told CNN.

Other witnesses and people posting on social media said that the man might have fired up to 30 times. Others reported fewer shots, and he might have tossed smoke bombs.

Officials said that shots were still being fired when the first officers arrived at the scene.

I work in Thousand Oaks. So it should be interesting to see what the overall vibe in town is today.

I already some surprising road closures on exits off the 101.

Most of the victims apparently attended a Lutheran school. I wonder if the cop got him or if he killed himself

I'm for more regulation, but how would stricter laws stop criminals from getting their hands on them?

They by definition don't care about the law, and wouldn't be stopped or slowed by it.

The Vegas shooting happened with someone who under even very strict laws would have still likely had his guns.

    RIP to the victims.

Americans needs to fix their weird fetish culture about guns if they ever hope to reduce the rampant gun violence in their country. That's where the root of the problem lies. Stricter gun laws will only treat the symptoms. It won't cure the disease.

Not necessarily. For that to be true they would have to give an unreasonable amount of psychological testing. Even if they implement a more in depth exam I doubt it would be enough filter out a big portion of these people.

Catching even one person is a favorable outcome for sure, but let's not act as if it's going to be a remedy to the terroristic acts we've seen these past years.

Tell me the last time a gang went into a bar and killed people randomly. Gangs and criminals will always find ways to get hold into guns but at least they will end up killing each other. The problem is when regular people decide to shoot random people just because they want too. People with no previous criminal history and capable of planning these kind of actions fully aware of their behaviour and its consequences (mentally stable).

Exactly it will only bandaid the problem. But what I find interesting is no one can even theoretically provide an idea of how the US would be dearmed.

Especially since criminals could still find a way to get them, I mean guns coming from Mexico isn't exactly unheard of.

Easy, many civilians are put into the fray a lot when gang fights break out. It happens not to uncommonly for Innocents to be killed because they were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Just the act of their rival being in an area can illicit gun fire which may catch many undeserving people.

There are also gangs who are known you import from Mexico things like drugs, and weapon. Such as MS13, or a gang like them.

Those guns get into black market circulation and are very hard to act against because they were never registered.

Based on the quote from the article and my handy chart, I'm pretty sure the gunman was white.

    Edit: Told You.

They wouldnt automatically. Thats the problem with this approach. As long as there are 320 million guns for 320 million people getting the hands on them is nothing which can be controlled.

The key word needs to be confiscation first, regulation after.

But the US already has problems with regulations.

Proposing confiscations will likely end you getting lynched by someone. Either politically or actually lol.

US aint ready for it yet, regardless how much sense it would make.
