    Inspired by the "Is 2D dead?" thread, I have decided to ask the Narutoforums gaming community, which do you prefer? 2D (a la Castlevania) or 2.5D (a la New Super Mario Bros.)

    I think 2.5D looks really cool when done right, and has some nice effects that 2D can't have, but for certain games (like Castlevania) 2.5D would just be weird (and bad, methinks).

    So I'm voting 2.5D, because overall I find it to be a little more interesting.

    What do all of you think?

    2.5D? u mean like 3-D sidescrollers?

    their both the same to me i guess, depends on how it looks. like the
    3-D models might look too blocky, so i'll like the 2D sprites more

    Wasn't familiar with term 3D sidescrollers, so wasn't sure what exactly it meant. >>;;

    So yeah, they're the same thing.

    As long as it's well done it doesn't matter. Personally I'm nostalgic so I prefer pure breed 2d games. But I don't mind 2.5d games either.

    2D can look better than 2.5D, with hand-drawn sprites. :nod

    Depends on how it's done, and which game it is.

    New SMB is amazing though, so I gotta vote for 2.5D.

    If it's not done well than 2.5d will look worse than 2d. On the other hand, 2.5d has hundreds of uses that haven't even been thought of yet, me thinks.

    I'm on the fence about this one.

    I'm going to stay retro. 2D, until 2.5D can reach the levels of GG and SF.

    It definitely has (especially GG, for that has terrible animation).

    I'm a stickler for classic sprite-based 2D, but some 2.5D stuff like New Super Mario Brothers or Ultimate Ghosts 'N Goblins are facsinatingly gorgeous in motion.
