Boy was this movie a crock of shit. Dunno how it's reviews are stable right now. Natalie Portman sounds odd when she swears.

What a film! Holy fuck. Ex Machina was fantastic, but Alex Garland stepped things up this time around. On a whole other level than his debut feature IMO.

Just watched it and I loved it.
It is a fantastic thought provoking movie. It is also all kinds of weird so casual sci-fi fans might not like it. It is never ever dull though so that is something.
    It gets 8/10 from me.
@Swarmy watch this movie man. It deserves a chance.

Not a bad movie, not exactly a good movie either.

I guess this one is up to personal preference. The whole movie is disturbing overall so maybe that effected my enjoyment of the movie a little :argh Its also a movie that felt like you're on drugs :caticon

The ending is lackluster, and the pacing is rather sloooooow. The characters are as interesting as a cardboard. The plot makes me question why are military sending people in without plans whatsoever. But its mainly the ending that makes me feel like the movie could be a waste of time to some, I certainly did felt like that. The movie does provoke some thoughts but its not that deep or anything like that.

    I gave it a 5/10 :caticon

I thought it was great. Not everything works and it's not a clean movie, but the messiness seems more the result of ambiguity and other intentions than it does incompetence. Very talented people in front of and behind the camera. The bear scene alone was worth the ticket.

    Spoiler:
An example of the messiness is the climax with the mirroring lifeform that stops portman from leaving the lighthouse. Eventually she figures out that the lifeform is copying her actions, so she tricks it into holding a grenade and then runs out, leaving the grenade to blow up the lifeform. But you have to think about that for a minute to make sense of it. On the face of it, the 'mirroring' lifeform should have mirrored portman's hand dropping the grenade and then run after her instead of just standing there staring at the grenade waiting for it to explode.

But the lifeform doesn't just mirror portman. It's mirroring her while it's trying to build itself after her, and the mirroring isn't always exact even then. By the time she tricks it into holding onto the grenade, it's mostly shaped itself after portman and might be looking for other chemical reactions to imitate and grow itself. That's why it looks very intently at the grenade once the pin is pulled; it's fixated on the chemical reactions inside the grenade, and wondering if it can then imitate / absorb the grenade object.

That's just an idea, but the movie has plenty of ideas to explain the messiness.

I liked it. Still thinking about some scenes. Not perfect and maybe not quite as good as ex machina, but not a step down. At worst, just a step to the side. Definitely keeping my eye on Garland.

I feel once they had touched, in a way they lifeform had broken free and at the same time those human emoitons of self destruction had passed in to the life form. Like an echo. So it was impulsive like the others are destroyed it's creation. This is just a maybe tho.

Actually, I think it's the type of movie that "Prometheus" was trying to be, but couldn't because there was too much of an obligation to be mainstream enough for fans of the "Alien" franchise.

But it's not a movie for everyone either.

    Nope.

Tbh this movie has more focus on the psychological aspect than actual horror. Extreme emphasis on psychological, than whatever alien its talking about.

If I compared to Prometheus... I guess I do like Prometheus more too. :hm

I thought it was good film but I don't think its a film I'll be able to watch multiple times - its an interesting film but its also very downbeat - and the effect that the "Shimmer" has on everything inside it and on the scientists was tough to watch. Considering my own daily struggles "The Shimmer" is terrifying.
