"The Enemy of my Enemy is my Friend"

Countries that border China often have actual or potential territorial disputes with the Middle Kingdom. And their longer shared history means they've had more time to build up bad blood. For example Vietnam was a Chinese province for 1000 years (100 BCE-900 CE).

America on the other hand is safely located at an arms length from local conflicts both geographically and cultural-historically.

Not a surprise. Almost every Asian country would prefer the US as a world leader over another Asian country.

There's also the issue that people tend not to respect those who are poorer than themselves. Even if they are a huge economy when put together.

    Total GDP

    1. Mainland China ($12 t)

    2. Japan ($4 t)
    3. South Korea ($1 t)

    4. Taiwan ($500 b)
    5. Hong Kong ($300 b)
    6. Singapore ($300 b)

    7. Vietnam ($200 b)
    8. Macau ($42 b)
    9. North Korea ($17 b)

    GDP per capita

    1. Macau ($77,000)
    2. Singapore ($57,000)
    3. Hong Kong ($46,000)

    4. Japan ($38,000)
    5. South Korea ($29,000)
    6. Taiwan ($24,000)

    7. Mainland China ($8000)
    8. Vietnam ($2000)
    9. North Korea ($600)

Why don't they pick an another one that is far from them? Something more Confucian even if the US moving towards that bs.

I bet all these rigid cultures are really attractive.

    3. Bad blood between China and Japan
    4. US aids (baits) to S. Korea and Japan after WWII

As China continues to develop for another 10 years, things will change fast so much that we could talk about those 4 facts in favor of China.

But not necessarily for the better of China. The border disputes Shaddow mentioned are more likely to get worse instead of better and recent threads show a hint of Panic about the Chinese-American import wars.

Ah there's Shadow, trying to pretend it's not because China is a brutal, censorious dictatorship actively trampling on people's rights and decent working conditions who already has a habbit of brutally absorbing surrounding countries and trying to destabilise them by colonialising them out of existence.

Gotta keep that citizenship credit score up I see. :awesome

as long as xi is in power nothing will change

chinese will have no real human rights and can disappear at the government's will, so I can't see why other developed asian countries would think china is better than US

Surprised it's only 73%. They must have included Chinese in the survey.

Huh. Some exceedingly stupid people out there, then.

When was the last time this happened?

The most recent net expansion of China I can think of is the conquest of Xinjiang in 1755. Please enlighten me of there been any others.

The re-incorporation of Hong Kong & Macau don't count since those were consensual on the part of Britain & Portugal.

@mr_shadow was apologetic with China's corruption against its own population by accounting for the railroads that were created by American slaves. That's not an exaggeration either, it shows how far he's lost his mind with his blind loyalty towards the country.

    Right.

Although I'll point out that Tibet 1912-1959 was never recognized as independent by the United Nations, so it was an ambigous situation like Taiwan or Palestine.

But sure, it was an expansion of the area under Beijing's control using force, absolutely.

I'm surprised you didn't say something like "Tibet was always a part of China" to be honest.

Also the UN isn't a measuring stick for objective reality. Their non recognition doesn't magically make Northern Cyprus or Transnistria not exist now does it ? : P

Hong Kong was a British territory, so London could legally do whatever they wanted with it, including cede it to another country.

If that seems unfair you should ask Britain why they didn't give HK self-determination at any point during the 155 years it was theirs.
