Heh, that's what I used to think, but then people pointed out to me that Sarutobi is the 3rd's first name, while Sarutobi is Asuma's last name.

EDIT: Almay beat me to it. *glare*

Are you sure Sarutobi is Sandaime's first name? I mean we dont know much about kage's they could lose there first name when they become hokage and simply retain there last name and title. Don't know why... just thought i would throw it out there.

    Yes, we are sure.

Sarutobi is Sandaime's given name and Sarutobi is Asuma's family name.

i kinda been wondering that to. in japan some people call each other by last name only out of respect and to be polite. but im sure they can be related because doesnt asuma wear something that symbolizes the hokage or something along those lines.

Doesn't anybody thinkit more of a coincidence that both have the name sarutobi?
No one ever said that was Sandaime's first name, everyone is just asumming so because Orochimaro called him Sarutobi-Sensei.

They both have the same pointy beard, same complexion, same name... Come on!

How are you sure? As I said before, they may call him by his last name since he was one of the greatest of all hokage and he his significantly older than a lot of people. Well it really does depends on hwo they do it in "naruto culture". But you still have to assume that it's his given name. Asuma does look like Enma in a way also..

I'm pretty sure Sarutobi is Sandaime's given name. Orochimaru kept calling him Sarutobi Sensei, and in all other examples we've had of this it's been the teacher's given name used (Kakashi sensei, Gai-sensei etc)
Shodai and Nidaime also called him Sarutobi, and Nidaime said about his "Monkey" nickname (which came from "Saru"). It doesnt seem too likely his older teachers would call him by his clan name.

Why not? He named his grandson Konohamaru.
... Are you thinking what I'm thinking?
Konohamaru is the bastard son of Asuma! Dun Dun Dun!
Asuma doesn't live with him in order to Dupe Kurenai into thinking he's a bachelor.

... Is the 3rd's first name sarutobi?

He is very old and the leader of the village and also called the god of shinobi... so.... Yeah, they could refer to him by his last name.
