    Not a trap @Avalon @Smoke

Can you guys throw down in the kitchen? What are you able to bake? How did you learn (self-taught? family member? professional?). I use my oven to roast things mainly, but I do plan on learning how to make desserts too. things i would want to learn how to make include croissants, muffins, cookies, and bread.

also, moment of silence for the bento box. rip. :blobcookie

My mother taught me several years ago how to cook and bake. Super useful life skill and it's a lot of fun tbh. :blobcookie

This is from a different thread, last month.

My room mate has taken them to work, and she says that her coworkers love them. The secret is that I put double the coffee, and instead of mixing it with a whisk/spoon, I put the bowl on the ground and use my left foot.

My main thing is brownies. All the brownies. I'm working up to an impossible cake.

Once in a while, I'll cook salmon.

    I don't really like sweets, so I don't bake.

I do cook a lot though, and I learned how by just Googling whatever I wanted to make. IMO, there's no excuse for not knowing how to cook when there are thousands of websites for literally any recepe.

I used to make cookies and cake as a kid. The cake was always from a cake mix (except for one time where I tried and failed to make a really impressive looking cookbook cake).

Recently I heard even professional bakers use cake mix, since it simplifies the process so much which means a lot less can go wrong.

Also I heard putting some coffee in chocolate cake is a good idea but I don't know if it's true

Espresso powder. And yes, it's awesome. The trick to a good taste, is not to be stingy with it.

I'm a career cook and work in fine dining but usually when I bake there is usually something I am less than satisfied with about it. There's a lot more variables with pastry it seems, whereas other cookery can yield more consistent results with more wiggle room.

That being said, I'm interested a lot in baking and am always trying to learn more. I even consider going to work for a bakery

I love to bake, mostly sweets. My last job was pretty stressful, so learning to bake helped out with that. My coworkers could always tell if I had a bad day, because I'd come in with cookies/cakes/brownies whatever the next day.

I like cooking. Not that I am great or anything but I've been told that the things I make are at least tasty. I know how to make desserts and but savoury stuff as well.

I've never really done any baking outside of home economics class in middle school. I can follow recipes/instructions well though, and my brownies were the teacher's favorite in class, I did add more sugar and cocoa than the recipe called for though.

    Why not expand your options?

More sugar is almost always good. I've found most people are used to the extra sugar added into processed food, so they really enjoy a little sugar added to homemade goods as well. I figure its not nearly as bad as what they add but still enhances flavor.

I love to cook things I actually eat. That's how I develop a passion for what I'm doing, if I can enjoy it myself. Most baked-goods I don't really eat, so I've never cared to learn.

I feel like I'm still pretty amateur in baking or rather, I don't have the tools to make anything fancy.

I use simple basic recipes to learn the basics and then adapt them.

I can bake cinnamon rolls, brownies, cakes, cookies, and biscuits. I can do a lot if you put a basic recipe in front of me and I get some practice.

In cooking on the stove or grill or roasting meats, I'm really good though. My baking needs further refinement.

I plan to start learning to make pizza from scratch as well. I already make a good pizza sauce.

Making scratch pizza is a huge new pleasure for me. It's so good, it eliminates my cravings for any other pizza.

Unfortunately baking does sometimes require more tools like special pans, but at the same time its very recipe driven like you said, rather than intuition driven which is the challenge with other cooking.

I was gonna start practicing soon but now my boss keeps putting me work most of the week. I think he might be planning to make me want to quit since I've now gotten him his nice shiny grade A during inspection ~_~

Thanks cleaning guy, now go eat shit @~@...

Ahem that's not EXACTLY related so back on topic.

But yeah I can't wait to give it a go cause most people think my red sauce is really delicious. If I can just make a good dough it'll be so good!

I’m not much a cook. I can make a few very basic and simple things. My problem is a lack of creativity and bravery to use spices.

As for baking, it’s pretty much the same. I follow standard recepies when I bake, like muffins, or a Swedish chocolate cake that is similar to a brownie or the American mud cake.

I mostly taught myself from looking at my mother's cookbooks growing up, and it's always been one of my favourite things to do. I just don't really have the time to do it as much as I'd like and also because baking something elaborate from scratch is so expensive. I usually just bake the cheapy stuff like cookies or muffins or loaves unless it's a special occasion like a birthday or during the holidays.
