The BBC and other sources are reporting that a proposed EU copyright law could require platforms for user-generated content to pre-emptively filter all uploaded content for potential copyright infringement:

This could have a chilling effect on content that is generally considered fair use, such as parodies or brief quotes/clips used in reviews. I've also seen some speculation that, if complying with the law creates too much hassle for websites, they may respond by simply geo-blocking users in the EU.

Techdirt's article has more detailed background, but it's also more of an opinion piece:

to be fair, this is kind of a sound reason to leave the EU when compared to the complaints voiced by the leave camp during the days leading up to the vote :/

What pisses me off in particular is how the ones pushing such legislations have absolutely no knowledge how the internet works and lack a basic understanding of how fair use works as well. It's generally people who lived most their lives before the age of the internet. Fuck these idiots and everything they stand for tbh tbf
Lol. Meanwhile in America, the FCC is trying to dismantle net neutrality.

    This.

It's stupid as hell that these people are legislating things that they don't even understand. Like I get that they don't use the Internet. That's whatever, but they should at least inform themselves.

It's like when that one senator asked Zuckerberg "Is Twitter Facebook?" Like wtf dude. You're passing laws about stuff you literally know nothing about.

Also EU law applies to NF. :zaru

While our lord and master @Tazmo is Canadian, our servers are physically located in Germany and therefore subject to German (EU) law.

This is horrific: how can people actually do something such as this? Are there actually people who dislike freedom of speech and freedom of expression?

@Island, @Roman, to be certain that you understand; when I rated your posts as "sad," I did not mean that your posts themselves were sad, I meant that the subjects about which you were posting were sad.

Well, somehow I'm not surprised you're perfectly ok with this sort of thing, especially when you're perfectly accepting of far worse things. You say it takes a special kind of asshole to ignore the signs that this was coming but don't pretend like this is exclusive to Europe. Just last year they tried to take down net neutrality. How long before the US tries that again, or even tries what the EU is currently trying as well?

"What's that? Past's history is calling and we've had thought policing nations shoot weaponless people to death for thinking or being different as well as being used as scapegoats to the problems they are facing via heavy thought policing? What?! Never, you'd be insane to think that's a thing that happened."
This is literally the sentiment being spread by you lot. Pure denial.
    >You're paranoid because you think the government is out to get you. You should give away your rights to weapons!
    >Why aren't you mad that the government is restricting your rights and freedom on the internet?!?
    >You think I'd do anything besides mock you all when the exact same thing comes up again and you suddenly cry wolf
    :pepethink

I never argued anything like this, despite it having demonstrable potential for good given how gun restrictions have been proven to work in countries where it was applied (See: Japan, Australia, UK)

    Yeah, why aren't you?

Which is what makes it look like you're perfectly ok with it. That we should expect something is going to happen doesn't mean we should readily accept or agree to it. Many of us expected the FCC to repeal net neutrality laws but many of us also did not accept it, writing to our state reps to encourage them to fight the FCC's decision. Lo and behold, that's exactly what happened and Ajit Pai is in deep shit for literally rigging the game.

We should be the ones mocking you for your apathy because you're part of the problem.

Thinking further on it, being recently hired by a multinational may prove to be an insane stroke of luck for me. If I play my cards right, I can get relocated somewhere outside of Europe where this shit won't affect me if it goes through.

Watch out Canada. You might see me again before long.
