I just made this thread to understand if there are people other than me who know what Pandora's Box is. (Go ahead and make fun of me. Just remember the Golden Rule before you do so.)

Well, Pandora's Box was an evil, dark container. "Of what?" You might say this. Pandora's Box was the bearer of ancient, darkness of unimaginable propotions. You may not know this, but someone opened this terror. Everything evil and dark escaped this Box. The was an upside to this. What's the upside? Hope. Hope was the only good and holy thing to come out of Pandora's Box. I don't believe this legend resides in only Greek mythology. Oh wait... I forgot. This is NOT a myth. What I said is all true, even if I haven't seen Pandora's Box myself.

not a myth. so humans never had hate and jelousy before the box was opened, because it was contained in the box, since we all know emotions are physical things that can be kept in a box.

yea, lay off the weed man, i read this story when i was 7, and i did not even belive it then, exactly how old are you now?

From what I can remember (it's been a long time since I read up on my Greek myths), Pandora's existence came about in revenge.

After the Olympians won the war against the Titans, Zeus set Prometheus (forethought) and Epimetheus (afterthought) to making creatures to populate the world. Prometheus took his time trying to create the perfect being (man), while Epimetheus just threw stuff together and bestowed his creatures with feathers, fur, scales, etc. When Prometheus was finished creating man, he was disappointed that Epimetheus gave all the really good gifts to the animals. He asked for something to protect man against the cold, but there was nothing left. He asked the gods for a piece of the sacred fire to keep them warm, but he was shot down there too.

Prometheus decided to steal a piece of the fire anyway. After that, Zeus got pissed. He demanded sacrifice. Prometheus set up an elaborate plan for the people to be able to keep the best part of the meat. One pile was the good meat covered in gross parts, the other was a pile of gross parts covered in good bits. Zeus picked the gross pile covered in bad stuff. Again, he was pissed off.

As punishment he had Prometheus chained to a cliff face to have his liver torn out every day by an eagle. Every night it would grow back because he was immortal.

For the mortals he was more clever. He had a woman created. Each of the Olympians gave her a gift. Beauty, charm, and above all, curiosity. They named her Pandora and Zeus breathed life into her and gave her to Epimetheus as a wife. He also entrusted Epimetheus with a box with the instruction to never open it.

Epimetheus told Pandora to never open the box. Eventually curiosity got the better of her and she opened the box. All the troubles of the world flew out. Only hope was left at the bottom, locked into the box to give humanity half a chance. Hope, a shining beacon in a world filled with pestilence, jealousy, and plague.

That's Pandora's Box. After that it's the Greek version of the Arc story. My dad reads the bit about Hope every year at our Winter Solstice dinner. I was really into Greek mythology when I was in elementary school.

Pandora's box was an interesting explanation of "why does evil exist?". As the Monotheistic religions put the blame on Eve for creating the original sin, the Greeks also blamed a female for it....I find it amusing how both faiths put the root of evil as the fault of woman.

Anyway I would totally tell someone there's some candy in there and watch them open it. OWNED.

Let me tell you the story:
It starts out with a girl named Pandora coming to live with a boy named Epiemetheus (sp?). When she arrives at his house she notices a box with lots of knots tied around it. She asks Epiemetheus where he got it from and he says a stranger came a few days ago and brought it to him. Curious Pandora seeks to open the box. One day when Epimehteus comes home, she tells him she untied the ropes and is going to open it. At first, Epimehteus says not to but then he says ok. So together, the two of them open the box. When they open the box all the troubles and hope of the world are released and that is why there is such a thing as ageing.

I know what Pandora's box is. I've read Edith Hamilton's Mythology. Like what I've said in other threads, the world we live in is a fallen world..not because of the Pandora's box being opened and evilness was released from it..No...Society is the Pandora's box.

We know that now.....but they didnt back then....just like they didnt exactly know how the sun and crops worked. They had to figure these things out for themselves, which is how gods, myths, and entire religions are created.

It's just another myth created to explain something we didn't understand at the time.

I strongly yet respectfully disagree. Pandora's Box is not a myth, Greek or not. It is true that someone did open the box. Lol. I can't believe it! You know, if it was in any one person's place to decide whether or not something was a myth, then myths would surround us.
