While I know that Gai hasn't shown any long distance moves in the past but it could be just because he dosen't like to use any long-range compact and prefere to use close-range taijutsu.

He used nunchakus against Kisame clone, but it's still a close distance weapon.

The Databooks give him 3 out of 5 on Ninjutsu and Genjutsu. I take it he's alright at long distance combat, but perhaps not on par with Tenten because it's her specialty and not his. It's like comparing an author who was a Medical Major in college with an author who has only a high school diploma but took Honors English classes every year.

Gai is an "in your face" kindda guy. Why would he give a shit about long distance, it's not his style.

Same, Kurenai is good at Genjutsu and until now none of her students even use it.

well not because he only uses taijutsu he cant use the other fighting method. >< he just likes kicking peoples face/ass/etc. O.o I think a weapon would actually slow him down for taijutsu

Gai seems to be more of a short range fighter.

I'm sure he knows some decent ninjutsu, but he clearly prefers close-range fighting.

Well I don't believe that throwing tools or such doesn't really make him a ninjutsu user nor does the tool throwing is ninjutsu it self.:oh

I always pegged Gai to be a close range fighter.
I actually prefer him that way, I cant really see him being a long-range fighter.

As good as Tenten? No. Not to say he's gonna be terrible at long range, but he isn't going to be as proficient as her. She's described as

I don't think so. I think he's okay at long distance, just that he's WAY better at short-distance taijutsu.
