    Everything Remains in Memory

?It?s that day again,? thought Tsunade gloomily as she took a sip of her sake. She gazed somberly out at the awakening ninja village of Konohagakure no Sato. She always dreaded this day, not only because it was on a Tuesday, her least favorite day of the week, but because today was the day that the two people that cared most for her had died; March 15th.

?Nawaki, Dan, I?m sorry,? she thought morosely as she absentmindedly swirled around the rice wine in her tray before slowly enveloping it between her lips, the warm alcohol sliding down her throat and lifting a little of the remorse from her shoulders. ?Sake, the panacea of ninja,? thought Tsunade as she poured herself some more of the sweet, sweet, liquor.

It was then that Shizune burst into the office, looking frazzled and disturbed; her clothes wrinkled, her hair in a mess, and her eyes were welled up with tears.

?Tsunade-sama?.we?we?just?received word?that?that?Naruto-kun?he?s?he?s?he?s dead,? sobbed Shizune. ?He died, Tsunade-sama, Uzumaki Naruto died!? she sobbed grievously. Tsunade seemed to be deep in thought, however, as she once again shifted her gaze to the sight of the village, her village, being greeted by the pastel dawn.

?I know, Shizune. I know,? Tsunade said quietly. ?I?m the one who signed the warrant for his death.?

?No?no?you couldn?t have?you loved him?you loved him like a brother?you loved him like you loved Nawaki! I don?t believe you!? retorted Shizune angrily as she tried wiping her tears away with the sleeve of her kimono as Tsunade rose up from behind her desk, her genjutsu faltering slightly, allowing some wrinkles and gray hairs to show through.

?I?m leaving here tomorrow, Shizune. You can come with me if you choose, but I won?t hold it against you if you instead choose to stay here,? announced Tsunade as she walked past her distraught apprentice and out of the office. As she walked through the hallway of the Hokage Tower, her footsteps echoed off of the walls, and with each echo a memory of her adopted younger brother smashing into her mind.

They all spoke a message. They told her ?you killed him without a second thought, a second doubt, a second tear. Is that all he meant to you? Is that all??

Tsunade tried her hardest to keep back her tears; she was done crying. She was done mourning her losses and looking down on life. She had made mistakes in her past, and she acknowledged them. But tomorrow she would a start a new life, not as twenty fiveyear old Godaime Hokage, but as fifty two year old Ishimatsu Tsunade.

As she exited the massive tower, she felt a pulse of chakra, a pulse all too familiar to her.

?It couldn?t be,? thought the Godaime Hokage in awe. ?He can?t be alive?Naruto?s dead. The Kyūbi no Kitsune should be dead,? thought Tsunade forcefully.

?So you feel it too?? asked an apathetic voice behind her.

?Hatake-san, you were actually here when it attacked; how strong was its pulse?? asked Tsunade.

?Stronger than this,? answered Kakashi, as he walked next to Tsunade. ?It?s probably still in the stage of regaining its power,? stated Kakashi.

?You don?t seem to be fazed by any of this,? Tsunade deadpanned.

?When you live as a ninja you should always keep a cool head, right Tsunade-san?? asked Kakashi.

?Correct,? affirmed Tsunade. After several seconds of awkward silence, Tsunade resumed the conversation. ?He?s dead you know.?

?I guessed by Shizune?s appearance,? said Kakashi. ?It?s a shame though, he showed much promise, even at the ripe age of sixteen,? Kakashi stated.

?Is that the only thing that you can care about right now Hatake-san; that he may have been a good weapon to be used at our disposal?? Tsunade angrily demanded.

?No, but it would be too difficult to think of anything else but that right now,? enlightened Kakashi. ?I always thought that I could?ve made it up to him though; for always excluding him and treating him more as a nuisance than as a student.?

The conversation between the two seasoned ninja stopped there, as it was going in a direction that neither person wanted to visit.

After what seemed like an eternity, Kakashi began to walk away from the Godaime Hokage, but stopped.

?Don?t even bother sending any troops,? suggested Kakashi. ?The only person that can stop that monster is long dead.? He then walked off towards the training grounds, his face buried in one of the Icha Icha books.

    -----

Naruto stood still. It?s not that he didn?t want to move, but his arms and legs were completely obliterated by Chōji?s enlarged limbs and he was being kept in place, despite the fact that he couldn?t move, by the kage mane no jutsu (shadow imitation technique).

?Naruto, I believe I speak in the words of all five of us when I say that we are truly sorry for what we are about to do, and that we do not wish to have to eliminate you,? explained Neji,

?Why?? Naruto croaked, in wracking pain from having to stand on his destroyed legs and only barely conscious. ?I thought?I thought...I thought that we?we were?friends.?

?We were ordered to, directly by the Hokage,? somberly said Sasuke, and for once his eyes were not filled with anger, but with sorrow.

?Baa-chan? No?she?she would never?do?that,? stammered Naruto. ?She would never do that do you hear me!? yelled Naruto at the team of five elite Konoha jōnin that were sent to eliminate him. Surprisingly, it had been his own comrades that had been hired to do this: Shikamaru, Neji, Chōji, Sasuke, and Kiba.

?That is the truth, Naruto?my friend,? argued Neji in a soft voice, grief and sorrow laced heavily within every word. ?You are in the realm of my eight trigrams,? somberly announced Neji as he got into the signature stance of the Gentle Fist?s signature move. He then charged Naruto and began his ruthless assault.

?Two palms?four palms?eight palms?sixteen palms?thirty two palms?sixty four palms?? Neji whispered. Naruto thought that the attack was over, but he was dead wrong.

?One hundred twenty palms?three hundred and sixty one palms,? panted Neji, having to use the majority of his chakra to pull off the Hyūga Clan?s most destructive, but costly, jutsu. He then sank down to his knees very uncharacteristically, completely drained.

Naruto stood still, his eyes the same bright azure that his companions had grown up knowing, but now they were empty, holding nothing but an empty vessel.

Shikamaru then released the kage mane no jutsu as Kiba caught Naruto?s crumpling form.

?Uchiha inform the Council that their mission is complete,? Shikamaru commanded, as he struggled to keep his composure, along with the other four.

Just as Sasuke relayed the message to the Council, Akamaru, who was now at least half of Kiba?s height, started shaking and quivering in submission. And then Kiba unbecomingly dropped Naruto onto the ground and quickly backed away from the corpse.

?Kiba, what?s wrong?? Chōji asked. ?I?ve never seen you this?afraid before.?

?It?s Naruto?he?he?s not dead,? stammered Kiba.

?You must be mistaken Inuzuka, I?ve closed off all of the tenketsu in his body. There has not been even one person who has ever survived that technique, especially if they were standing still.

?Yes, and I must thank you for that,? a foreign voice said; a voice that came from Naruto?s body. Four loud popping sounds pierced the air as Naruto stood up on both of legs, his eyes closed. ?I always did think you to be weak, Hyūga, but I must commend you on freeing me; no other mortal has been stupid enough to do that,? Naruto sneered as he opened his eyes, a sickly shade of crimson.

?You might be wondering who I am, correct?? asked Naruto. ?You see, I?ve been sealed inside this?abomination?for the past sixteen years, and I?ll give you the privilege of knowing my name before I kill you and destroy your infernal village.

You know me as the Kyūbi no Yoko, or the Kyūbi no Kitsune. I?ll make sure you die a slow, torturous death,? promised the possessed Naruto as he grinned ferally and claws and fangs grew from his teeth and hands.

    ---

?Otou-sama, what is that?? fearfully asked a young, white eyed girl, who stood next to her older sister and their father.

?That, Hanabi, is the Kyūbi,? answered Hiashi stoically. ?It is going to come and kill us.?

?He?s dead?Naruto-kun?? whimpered Hinata as tears rolled down her face.

?Onee-san, why do you cry for some boy yet not for yourself, or for me? Why are you so sad now, yet when Otou-sama trains you to the bone, you show no sign of submission whatsoever? Why is he so special?? Hanabi thought to herself. In actuality, the only time she ever remembered her sister crying was when the Sandaime had died, despite her fragile and meek disposition. ?Otou-sama, who is this Naruto that Hinata speaks of?? Hanabi asked.

?He is the one that defeated Neji in the Chūnin Exams four years ago, and he is, was, the container of the Kyūbi no Yoko. Apparently, he has failed his mission, and now death is inevitable,? explained Hiashi, not a trace of fear in her voice.

?No?you can?t say that he failed,? protested Hinata through her sobs. ?You can?t say that after sixteen years of dealing with abuse and still being so happy that he has failed. That, that does him no justice,? she said before bursting into even harder sobs.

?Onee-san, why do you defend him, when you don?t even defend yourself? Why? Why is he so special to you if he makes you sad? Why didn?t you tell me? Why?? furiously thought Hanabi. ?Why didn?t you tell me that you loved him??

Mainly inspired by the amount of fics I've read where Naruto defects and is instantly accepted back into Konoha.

    “Am I dead?”

    “No, you’re very much alive.”

    “Then where am I?”

    “You’re within yourself.”

    “That doesn’t make sense.”

    “It’s not supposed too.”

    “What are you?”

“I am the being that is sealed even deeper within you than the Kyūbi.”

    “Then who are you?”

    ----

“You must have had a reason for doing it,” Sakura insisted. “You would never have sentenced him to death on a whim, Tsunade-shisou.” The two sat within Sakura’s rather large apartment, sipping tea despite the imminent danger ahead of them.

“I knew you would figure it out, Sakura,” Tsunade complimented as she took a sip of, not sake, but of herbal tea. “As you’ve probably guessed, the Council has been trying to kill Naruto by sending him on high classed missions lately. But he seemed to love the dangerous ones and he always managed to come back in one piece, so I’ve had at least some reassurance over the past year or two.

But, two days ago the Council became tired of merely waiting for his death and decided to issue out a double S ranked mission for him; those are only given for executions or suicide missions, and if the ninja that were supposed to complete their mission fail to do so and live, they are to be publicly executed for high treason. They also forced me to assign the task of his execution to his friends, so that he would not suspect anything.

If I did not comply, both Shizune and I would be listed as A-class nukenins, Naruto would be publicly executed, as would all of his living relatives,” explained Tsunade. “I keep trying to convince myself that I did the right thing, but the fact that I was the one that insured his death, and by his own friends for that fact, still hangs over my head,” confessed Tsunade, somehow keeping a composed appearance as she took a sip of the refreshing tea. Sakura appeared blindsisded by her sensei’s explanation.

“Wait, Naruto has living relatives?” Sakura asked. “I thought he was an orphan.”

“No, he still has living relatives: a mother and a younger brother,” Tsunade revealed, causing Sakura to gag on her tea.

“And they let him live the life of an orphan even though they were alive? He could’ve grown up at least somewhat normally! Then, maybe, maybe he could’ve been able to achieve his dreams!” angrily yelled Sakura, accidentally knocking over her teacup.

“How can they love someone they believe to be dead?” Tsunade asked.

“You mean…you’ve never told them?” asked Sakura.

“No, it was requested in the Sandaime’s will that Naruto’s heritage be kept secret. In fact, I am the only one who knows who exactly his parents are, although Jirayia and Kakashi probably have guessed already,” explained Tsunade.

“Why though? Why keep such things away from him? He could’ve been happy…maybe he wouldn’t have become such a loudmouthed idiot. Maybe…maybe…”

“It’s no use to dwell on what could have happened,” Tsunade said. “But his heritage could not be revealed because what is sealed within him.”

“You mean the Kyūbi?” Sakura asked, not seeing how the fact that he had the Kyūbi sealed within him could affect such a drastic issue.

“No, Sakura, not because of the Kyūbi. There is something else sealed within him. Something that, if it was revealed that it was sealed within Naruto, would have had not only our Council and our own village attempting to kill him, but foreign countries as well.”

“What is it? What could possibly have that much effect on Naruto’s wellbeing?” Sakura inquired.

“It’s more of a matter of whom, than what.”

    ---

“My name is Kazama Arashi; however you would know me as the Yondaime Hokage.”

“You…you were the one that sealed the furball in me! You ruined my life!”

“We can talk about that later, Naruto, but right now you need my assistance.”

“Why would I even want your help after what you did to me?”

“To save your friends, your village, everything.”

    “What do you mean?”

“Do you think that the Kyūbi will just leave here without finishing what it came to do?”

    “No…”

“Then you need to choose what is more important: your pride or your friends.”

“What do you need to do?”

“I need you to perform the following handseals: dog, ram, snake, dragon, ram, rat, snake, rooster, tiger, boar, rooster, dragon, ox, snake, rat, boar, monkey, tiger, snake, rat, dog, dragon, rooster, dog, monkey, snake, ram, monkey, ox, rat, dog, monkey, tiger, boar, and then dog. Then place your left hand in front of you.”

“What jutsu is it? It must be pretty damn strong if there are so many seals.”

“It’s a jutsu who’s results are entirely opposite to the Hokage Shiki Jijun Jutsu: Kakuan Nitten Suishu (Hokage-Style Sixty-year-old Technique: Enclosed Hermitage Return to Society), forcing a transmutation

“So you want me to transmutate with the Kyūbi?”

“No, you would be transmuting with me. Once that happens, I would be able to permanently seal the Kyūbi.”

“Hell no! You may be a Hokage, but I am not sharing a body with you!”

“Your life and the life of your loved ones, or your pride. Damoclese’s Sword is hanging above your head Naruto. Now decide.”

    ---

“Damn it,” groaned Sasuke as he struggled to stay on his own two feet, cuts and bruises mottling his entire body.

“Tch, I would’ve expected at least a little more from the supposed Uchiha prodigy,” sneered the Kyūbi as it licked the blood from its lips. Over the past minute, it had not only put four of the five team members in potentially fatal conditions, but it had begun to change.

Its hair began to turn a brownish red color, like that of dried blood, its eyes had transformed into red animalistic slits, it had started to develop fangs and claws, and it started to grow, now standing at about six feet tall with three tails, its body impossibly muscular.

“I won’t let you live after what you did,” Sasuke said as the Sharingan whirled furiously.

“Oh, and what was that?” the Kyūbi asked uninterestedly.

“You made my Naruto’s life a living hell. You made him live a life of loneliness and disappointment. I will make sure that you die, kitsune yōkai,” spat Sasuke.

“Oh, trust me, it didn’t take that much to drive him over the edge sometimes. You and your perfect little village did most of the work for me; all I had to do was nudge him a bit and everything would collapse. In fact, thanks to you especially, Sasuke, I was able to lower his emotional self-esteem and guard, and it just made it that much easier to seize control of this body,” it boasted as it maliciously grinned.

“You bastard,” growled Sasuke. “Im going to kill you!” he yelled as he charged the demon fox with his sword, slashing wildly and missing each time.

“Foolish boy, you stand no chance of even hitting me if you could not even kill your older brother,” the Kyūbi taunted as it dodged yet another of Sasuke’s slashes.

“Shut up!” he roared as he slashed once again at the Kyūbi, this time the sword was caught by the demon and was snapped into two pieces.

“You’re beginning to bore me,” darkly said the fox. “I don’t like being bored.”

Sasuke quickly formed the seals for the raikiri and charged the fox, but this time connecting to the fox’s stomach, impaling it.

“Got you,” sneered Sasuke. The Kyūbi grimaced in response and forcefully pulled the shinobi’s arm from his abdomen. He then went on the offensive and began slashing at the Uchiha with his claws; each slash was deadly accurate, and the only way that Sasuke could avoid being killed was either by dodging constantly or constantly performing kawarimi (body replacement). Soon, Sasuke was drenched in sweat and exhausted, while the Kyūbi’s raikiri wound had almost completely healed and it had not even broken a sweat.

“Do you still believe that you can kill me? If so then you are…” Kyūbi began to ask, but was interrupted as he suddenly vomited a large quantity of blood onto the ground. “What the hell?”

Sasuke grinned devilishly at the recent events.

“It seems as if it’s finally entered your system,” Sasuke stated.

“The hell did you do to me?” the Kyūbi groaned, a dark look plastered on its face.

“Before we left, I slipped some poison into Naruto’s canteen in case we couldn’t finish him ourselves. It’s undetectable by any means and slowly eats away at a person’s organs and destroys blood cells, and when it finally does activate, it’s so far within a person’s system that the immune system has no protection other than consistently vomiting the infected blood,” explained Sasuke.

“You fucking little brat; I was going to kill you quickly, but now I’ll make sure that you suffer,” darkly threatened the Kyūbi as it vomited yet more blood.

Sasuke took this opportunity to draw the second of three swords in his possession and charged, piercing the demon in the shoulder blade, and followed it up with a chidori nagashi (one thousand birds current).

“Who doesn’t stand a chance now?” sneered Sasuke as the demon looked at him with a gaze of utter contempt.

“You forget something, Uchiha brat; my immune system is different than that of a human’s,” said the Kyūbi as he gripped Sasuke’s throat in his hand. Sasuke started to gasp for breath as his windpipe was slowly being crushed and the Kyūbi’s claws were drawing blood from his neck, a sadistic grin plastered on its face.

    Pt 2:

“So Naruto actually has the Yondaime’s soul trapped within his own?” Sakura asked.

“Apparently so,” affirmed the Hokage. “And other villages, especially Iwa, would jump at the chance to kill anyone linked to him. Even Kakashi as had to fight off numerous assassination attempts over the past twenty or so years. Even our own village would jump at the chance for a justified reason for killing Naruto, especially if it meant that the Yondaime’s soul could rest peacefully,” explained Tsunade.

“How exactly did that happen; Yondaime being sealed in Naruto I mean?” inquired Sakura.

“I don’t know for sure, but I’m sure that Jirayia has some kind of theory on it,” Tsunade said. A knock on the door interrupted their conversation, however. Sakura rose to answer the door, only to find an ANBU at her door.

“Is Hokage-sama present?” the ANBU asked.

“What do you want?” Tsunade snapped.

“Hyūga Hanabi, Hyūga Hinata, and Rock Lee have just been witnessed heading towards the source of the manifestation of Kyūbi’s chakra,” reported the ANBU.

“Why didn’t you stop them?” demanded the irate woman.

“We were advised by Hyūga-sama to allow them passage,” confessed the ANBU.

“Send a team out to intercept them,” barked Tsunade.

“Yes Hokage-sama,” complied the ANBU as he disappeared.

    “Sakura.”

    “Yes, Tsuande-shisou?”

“I want you to follow them, make sure that no one gets hurt,” ordered Tsunade.

“Yes, I understand,” gravely answered Sakura as she immediately left her house, having been already suited up for a mission.

“What has the world come to, having to send out children to do an adult’s job?” muttered Tsunade to herself as she left the pink haired kunoichi’s apartment to return to the Hokage’s Office, where she would be needed the most.

    ---

“Hinata-san, are you sure that the Kyūbi’s chakra is this way?” asked Lee as the three ninja jumped from tree branch to tree branch.

“I’m positive Lee-san, I’ve never felt anything like this before,” Hinata answered. Hanabi stayed quiet however, because if she attempted to say anything, the only thing that would come out was empty convictions and accusations.

After several minutes of running, Hanabi finally spoke up.

“It seems as if we’re being followed,” Hanabi stated, “By a standard ANBU squad plus one.”

    “Sakura-chan,” Hinata whispered.

“Ah; it is my Sakura-san that is following us? It is too dangerous for her to follow us; I’ll stay behind and make sure she doesn’t follow us,” Lee insisted.

“Lee-san, Sakura-san is an accomplished med-nin who is known throughout the country; I doubt that she would fare any worse than I,” Hanabi retorted.

    “Yes, but,” stammered Lee.

“I can take care of myself Lee,” stated Sakura, who seemed to magically appear behind them.

“Ah, Sakura-san; it is too dangerous for you; you must go back!” Lee insisted.

“No...as Hanabi said, I’d be perfectly fine,” retorted Sakura. Lee merely sighed in submission.

“And we should start pumping more chakra; the ANBU are advancing much more quickly now that Sakura-chan caught up to us,” Hinata suggested.

After a minute or two more of running, a large chakra pulse caused all of the ninja in the surrounding area to cease moving.

    “What…was that?” Sakura asked.

“It…it was…Naruto-kun…” Hinata stuttered. She then broke off into a headlong sprint, leaving the ANBU squad and her three companions behind.

“Let’s go,” Sakura insisted, both Lee and Hanabi immediately responding.

    ‘Onee-san…’ thought Hanabi wistfully.

    ---

The Kyūbi grinned maliciously as it tightened its grip ever so slightly on Sasuke’s throat, causing him to gag and wheeze.

“Now die,” spat the Kyūbi as it was about to finish off Sasuke. But before it could do so, it started to spasm, and dropped him to the ground. The Kyūbi then started to claw at itself, screaming. “No no no no no! What the hell is happening?”

A bright light then enveloped its body as two voices could be heard yelling; one voice, the boisterous, obnoxious voice of Uzumaki Naruto, while the other was a deeper, more mature version of Naruto’s.

“Disintegrating Demon Consummation Seal: Heavenly Release! (No way in hell do I know how to translate this)”

A large pulse of chakra then emanated from the demon’s body as it began to revert back to Naruto’s original form, shrinking, claws, fangs, and tails retracting, and hair and eyes turning back into their original colors. Naruto then fell onto the surface of the forest, naked and unconscious.

“Dobe,” wheezed Sasuke, hardly able to catch his breath. “Even death itself can’t stop you.” He began to succumb to the lightheadedness that began to creep into his body. The last thing he noticed before falling unconscious was the fact that the whisker marks that adorned Naruto’s face had mysteriously disappeared.

    ----

Hinata only barely kept herself from vomiting at the sight in front of her; the bloodied bodies of her comrades strewn about the forest floor. And then she saw him; Naruto. She rushed over to his side and gasped at the sight of him. Large cuts and slash marks, and bruises adorned his naked body, which caused Hinata to blush slightly as she began using medical ninjutsu to diagnose his status, and gasped when she found his internal organs being eaten away by poison. She immediately began using several high class medical jutsu in conjunction with each other to try to draw it out.

“Don’t die Naruto-kun…don’t die,” sobbed Hinata as she worked diligently to rid Naruto’s body of the invading agent. But it wouldn’t come out. “No…” she whispered. “No…no...Naruto-kun don’t die!” she screamed as she pushed all of her chakra into drawing the poison out.

“Hinata-chan…please…let me,” suggested Sakura, who had just arrived at the scene.

“No! Let me save Naruto-kun!” screamed Hinata as she violently shoved Sakura’s hand of her shoulder.

Sakura, not one to waste any time, immediately began to work on Sasuke, who seemed to be in the most danger of dieing.

“Hanabi, Lee!” snapped Sakura, her leadership abilities immediately kicking in. “Go tell the ANBU that Shizune, Tsunade, Shigure, Shiina, and Keiichi are needed her immediately if any of them are to live,” ordered Sakura. Hanabi and Lee immediately sprung into action, heading back to the squad of ANBU to deliver their message.

“I’ve never seen you like this onee-san…why are you so insistent on saving him?’ Hanabi asked herself as the two of them met the ANBU and delivered their message.

“Hinata…chan…is that you?” Naruto asked with a great amount of difficulty.

    “Yes…yes…Naruto-kun…it’s me…Hinata,” cried Hinata.

“It’s dead…Hinata-chan…the Kyūbi is dead,” muttered Naruto before once again falling into unconsciousness.

I hope you liked this chapter. Sorry if it’s a bit confusing though.

    “Dormant Soul speaking”

“Dominant soul speaking to dormant soul”

    ‘Thinking’

    “Regular dialogue”

    ---

    Five hours.

Five hours since she had been waiting outside of his room,

Five hours since they had found him mutilated in the forest.

Five hours since Sakura had literally pried her body off his dying one.

Five hours since she felt herself die inside.

No one knew what had transpired between the six of them.

    Nor do they know now.

She sat perfectly composed, just like the heiress of the Hyūga clan should, in the cold, hard, metal chair in the waiting room in the twilight, waiting for his status. Of course, he wasn’t the only one in the hospital. No, all six of the jōnin were in critical condition, with him and Sasuke being the worst off. But she was waiting specifically for him, Uzumaki Naruto.

‘I truly am useless,’ thought Hinata morosely as she slumped her shoulders and buried her face into her hands. But she did not cry.

No, she had already cried out all of her tears, and now her eyes felt as dry as the sands of Suna. But worst of all was that her teammates, no, her friends, had witnessed her go into hysterics once she had been pried away from Naruto. And to add to that, her beloved imouto had witnessed her in her weakest state; there was no doubt that she would report her hysterical breakdown to their otou-sama. Then she would be denied the inheritance of the Hyūga and be placed disgracefully in the one of the Branch Houses.

‘But none of those things matter, as long as you’re alright Naruto,’ thought Hinata as she massaged her temples. The clock on the wall above her ticked away the seconds that she sat there, slowly driving herself over the emotional edge.

The sounds of soft footfalls could be heard echoing through the hallways, the first in several hours. Hinata abruptly regained her composure and looked to see who was there; it was Sakura, who had been with Shizune and Tsunade attempting to revitalize her fallen comrades.

“How is he?” Hinata questioned as she gazed intently at the face of Haruno Sakura.

“He’s still in critical condition, but he’s stable now, Hinata-chan,” assured Sakura as she placed a hand on her friend’s shoulder to attempt to reassure her.

“May I…see him?” asked Hinata timidly as she wrung her hands. Sakura nodded slowly in the affirmative and led the girl towards Naruto’s room in the intensive wing through the dark corridors; the only sounds being their gentle breathing and the sound of their feet hitting the floor.

“I need to warn you though, Hinata-chan; he’s not himself,” grimly warned Sakura as she opened the door to reveal a heavily bandaged Naruto lying on a medical bed in a completely light blue room that had a plethora of medical equipment throughout the entire area. There was no one else in the room and the only source of light in the room was the full moon.

Softly, Hinata walked over to Naruto’s bed and sat lightly on it as she ran her pale, delicate fingers over his tan, unbandaged face. She noticed again that the whisker marks that were so prominently displayed for the world to see had disappeared and had been replaced with the tan skin that covered his entirety. At her touch, his eyes flickered open, and she withdrew her hand quickly and blushed.

“Ah, you must be Hyūga-san, correct?” Naruto asked, his eyes a less vivacious shade of blue than ususal.

“Naruto-kun…you don’t remember me?” worriedly asked Hinata, holding back threatening tears as she clasped her hands together.

“Quite the contrary Hyūga-san, I remember you very well. I remember all of the times that you have been there to support my son and encouraged him. But I have never seen your face, and I must say that you are stunning. You look like your mother, Hinata,” Naruto whispered hoarsely.

“Your…son? And how do you know my mother? Who are you?” demanded Hinata, albeit in that quiet tone that always seemed to possess her voice.

“I’m so sorry, but we have not met before Hyūga-san. My name is Kazama Arashi, and your mother, Hyūga Haruna, was a very close friend of mine,” the boy said as he smiled faintly.

“Kazama-san, where is Naruto?” asked Hinata as she regained some confidence.

“He is here, but he’s recovering from the battle against the Kyūbi, Neji, and Sasuke,” Arashi reported.

“You know what happened?” Hinata eagerly asked. Arashi frowned in response and gave the smallest of nods. “Would you tell me, Kazama-san?

“Hyūga-san, before anything else you must understand that my son was hated by the village for a misdeed of my own. For you see, Hyūga-san, I foolishly bound the soul of the Kyūbi no Kitsune into the body of my son so that it would be contained. But what I did not expect was for my own soul to be sealed along it; which is what happened,” began Arashi.

“So you mean to tell me that you are the Yondaime Hokage?” Hinata asked.

“I was the Yondaime Hokage. I relinquished my title the second that I lost my physical body,” corrected Arashi grimly.

“But then…that means that your son…” stammered Hinata.

“Correct, Uzumaki Naruto is my son and was the vessel for the Kyūbi no Kitsune,” affirmed Arashi. Everything clicked in the girl’s mind then: his poor treatment, his complex chakra nature, the whisker marks on his cheeks, and his striking semblance to the Yondaime Hokage. It all made sense to her now.

‘Naruto, I’m sorry. Truly, I am. I wanted to help you throughout these years, yet I was blind to your plight,’ thought Hinata as tears began to fall silently from her eyes.

“What do you mean by “was” the vessel of the Kyūbi?” asked Hinata, thrown off by the former Hokage’s choice of words.

“All things in due time, Hyūga-san; but first I must explain what had happened up to that point.

As you know, Naruto was detested for being the vessel of the Kyūbi. I do not know the full implications, but I have surmised that the Council had decided to take action and exterminate Naruto. What I do know however is that Hyūga Neji, Inuzuka Kiba, Akimichi Chōji, Nara Shikamaru, and Uchiha Sasuke were all assigned by Tsunade-san to eliminate him.

Unfortunately what they did not expect was that at the moment of his “death” the Kyūbi would take control over his body. It then went on a rampage, nearly killing all five of your colleagues. Naruto, on the other hand, reversed roles with the demon and was sealed within his own self, if that makes any sense.

It was then that we met face to face for the first time; he refused any and all assistance until I told him of what would happen if he did not accept my help. I had devised a special jutsu specifically for this purpose while I was sealed within Naruto, knowing that in due time something similar to what occurred today. The jutsu allowed a soul that was sealed to reverse roles with the dominant soul. However, it requires more than one person to execute it; one for the hanseals and one for the actual seals.

After performing it, I was able to execute a variation of the seal I originally used. However, this seal permanently destroyed the Kyūbi, causing its spirit to implode and explode on itself simultaneously and spend the rest of eternity within an alternate universe,” dictated Arashi.

    “Ano?” questioned Hinata.

“Yes, the actual science behind it is incredibly complex, but essentially the soul is placed under such an immense level of stress that it must collapse into itself to survive. However, at the same time the soul is forced to compress itself to a size when explosion is inevitable. And when any physical matter implodes and explodes at the same time an alternate dimension is created,” explained Arashi factually. “I’m sorry if you did not understand my explanation, Hyūga-san.”

    “No...it’s alright,” stated Hinata. “But…where is Naruto-kun?”

“That’s the complicated part; part of the side effect of the first jutsu was that any soul that was sealed within an organic lifeform would switch roles. And because there were multiple souls sealed within Naruto’s body that were not dominant, they were fused together. So in essence, Naruto and I are both the dominant soul. But only one of us can take control of his body at a time; one soul recuperates while the other controls the body. Right now Naruto was put under intense mental and emotional stress, so I am currently relieving his duties.”

“Kazama-sama…if you are Naruto-kun’s father, then who is his mother?”

“I’m sorry, Hyūga-san, but I have no place to tell you that kind of information,” apologized Arashi. “Naruto is the only one that has any place to do that.”

“Does he know who she is?”

“No, he does not even know that I am his father,” answered Arashi.

“Then why do you tell me all of this?”

“Because I believe that you, who has worked so hard to try to make my son happy, should have the privilege to know,” answered Arashi.

    Pt 2 of chapter 3!

bold=dominant soul communicating with dormant soul

bolditalics=dormant soul communicating with dominant soul

(Sorry, I forgot that bold/italics were not auto added)

It was dark when he awoke in the strange room that was not his own. It took him only a few seconds to recall what had happened; what he had been forced to do to his best friend.

?Is he alive?? Sasuke asked himself.

?Yes, Naruto is alive. Barely alive, but alive he is,? answered a voice next to him.

?You,? hissed Sasuke as he glared at the person sitting on a chair next to his bed. ?You sent us on that wretched mission. You forced us to try and kill my best friend; if it weren?t for you I wouldn?t be here.?

?I?m sorry, Sasuke, but the Council forced me to give you this mission specifically,? apologized Tsunade.

?I don?t care what the fucking Council made you do; you loved him like your own son,? he spat. ?Your own goddamn son!?

?You have no right to speak to me like that Uchiha Sasuke; after all, who was the one that almost killed him in your own pursuit for power, and of your own free will?? asked Tsunade. Sasuke could only hang his head in shame as he recalled his previous actions.

?I know better now,? he said.

?That doesn?t matter now; the damage is already done,? Tsunade chastised.

?You don?t think I fucking know that? How do you think I felt when I saw him again for the first time after my defection? Do you think I felt happy that Naruto was more solemn and introverted than before? Do you think I felt proud to know that I betrayed someone who I had came to see as a brother?? yelled Sasuke.

?No, I don?t think that you felt happy or proud, but I think that you need to make final amends with him before he leaves,? said Tsuande.

?What do you mean?? asked Sasuke.

?As soon as he recovers, Naruto is leaving for an extended training trip. No one knows how long he?ll be gone for,? Tsunade revealed.

?How are the others?? Sasuke asked.

?Kiba, Chōji and Shikamaru have all stabilized. Neji is still on the table, and its very likely he won?t survive,? Tsunade said.

?Then why the hell are you sitting here talking to me when you could be helping him?? demanded Sasuke.

?I merely thought that you would like to have known that you only have so long to say goodbye,? Tsunade said before getting up from her chair. ?Good night, Sasuke,? Tsuande said as she walked out of the room and closed the door behind her.

Sasuke sat in the dark and lonely room by himself, staring into the ceiling as a multitude of emotions took over: grief, anger, lonliness, self-pity, and many others.

?Naruto?I?m sorry. I know that you can?t here me but I?m sorry for all of the horrible things that I?ve done to you. I truly am?and I only hope that you can forgive me,? whispered Sasuke as he closed his eyes and waited for sleep to possess him.

    ---

    ?Where am I??

    ?You?re in the hospital, Naruto.?

    ?So it worked??

?Yes, it worked. The Kyūbi is essentially dead.?

    ?But why can?t I move??

?Right now I?m controlling your body.?

?What the hell? I thought that that seal thingy would kill the bastard fox and I?d be normal; not that I?d be sealed inside you.?

?It?s only temporary; you can take over whenever you want. Only discharge your chakra like you would if you were to dispel a genjutsu.?

Naruto woke up with a start as he did what the Yondaime said. He then noticed that there was a girl sleeping on a chair next to him.

?She came last night to check up on you. She had been waiting for the entire five hours that you were being operated on.?

?Hinata?were you really that worried about me?? thought Naruto as he tried sitting up. He realized it was a bad idea when his entire body seemed to ignite with pain and he gritted his teeth to restrain himself from yelping in pain.

    ?We?re leaving next week.?

?Who the hell died and made you Hokage?oh wait?never mind.?

?I figured that you would like to go on a training trip and let the people of this village forget you for awhile; then come back in several years and make a new name for yourself.?

?Only I can say what I do or not do?and I see we do that.?

Naruto moved his eyes to the window, where the full moon shining through the window gave the room an odd ethereal look as it only partially illuminated the room in shades of grays and only barely visible shades of dark colors.

?Where will I go from here, though?? Naruto asked himself as he sighed softly. However, it was enough to wake up the sleeping Hyūga.

?Kazama-sama?are you still awake?? Hinata mumbled as she rubbed the sleep from her eyes.

?Who the hell is ?Kazama-sama? Hinata? It?s me Naruto,? corrected Naruto matter-of-factly, having no idea of Hinata?s conversation with Arashi. He soon found himself in a tight hug as Hinata embraced the blond haired enigma tightly.

?Hinata?my ribs?? wheezed Naruto as pain shot through his torso.

?Sorry, sorry, I?m so sorry,? apologized Hinata hastily as she released Naruto and blushed a deep shade of red.

?Hinata?how long were you here for?? Naruto asked, wanting to confirm the information that Arashi had provided.

?Ano?seven or eight hours,? estimated Hinata as she looked at Naruto?s vivacious azure eyes.

    ?Why??

?I?I?I wanted to make sure that?you?.that?that you were alright,? Hinata stuttered.

?Why though? You could have just waited until I was released,? insisted Naruto.

?Because?I?I?I?I love you,? she whispered quietly as she brought her eyes to the ground and blushed.

    Silence.

?Naruto?? Hinata asked. However, when she brought her eyes to his prone form, she discovered that he had fallen asleep again and almost cried out of frustration.

?Why couldn?t he have answered me before falling asleep?? Hinata mentally screamed as she decided that it was too late to return to the Hyūga compound and tried to fall asleep again in the slightly more comfortable hospital chair.

Some people say that on the night of March 15th, the moon was blood red. To warn them of the future of Konoha, they say. But in reality, it was there own souls that were blood red.

It was their own sullied souls that brought upon their blight.

I can?t say I particularly like this chapter?I may go and edit in the future.

This chapter is dedicated to one of my co-workers who had recently collapsed from a heart attack during football practice.

He was pronounced dead only a few hours ago.

    R.I.P. James

    ----

Despite what she had earlier told her assistant a week prior, she was seated at her desk in the Hokage Tower, sorting through missions and grading their difficulty. However, she halted her work as a woman walked into the room, standing at attention in front of her desk.

?You requested to see me Hokage-sama?? the woman asked.

?Yes, yes, sit down,? Tsunade ordered as she took a small sip of sake. ?Do you recall the incident sixteen years ago?? The woman grimaced in response.

?If you mean the death of my husband, then yes, I do. I remember all too well. But is there a reason why you brought up such a painful event?? she asked as she sat down in a chair facing the Hokage?s desk.

?Yes, and I believe that you will be satisfied with what I?ve got to say,? said Tsunade. The woman sat stiffly in the chair, waiting for the Hokage to announce to her the news.

?Your son, Kazama Hikaru, is alive,? Tsunade revealed. She had expected the woman to at least show some reaction to the knowledge that her son was alive.

?I have already reached that conclusion Hokage-sama,? the woman announced. ?And Hikaru died the moment that the demon was sealed within him.?

    ?So you knew,? deadpanned Tsunade.

?Correct, from the first time that I escorted Hinata-sama to school I knew who he was; he looks exactly like his father,? announced the woman.

    ?Then why?? Tsunade asked.

?It?s quite obvious; I would lose the prestigious status in my clan if they ever found out that my eldest son was the Kyūbi container,? explained the woman, her face emotionless throughout her entire speech.

Tsunade slammed her fist onto the table in her frustration, breaking it as she became angrier than she had ever thought possible.

?After all these years of him suffering from the hands of this village, after all of the shit that he had to deal with, you?re telling me that you could have revealed yourself to him! What kind of person are you; to allow your own son, your own son, to suffer like that just so that you could retain your own social status?? yelled Tsunade.

?I am a smart person, Hokage-sama,? the woman retorted indignantly.

?Get out of my office,? Tsunade snarled. ?Leave here and don?t come back; send one of your emissaries for your missions from this point on.?

?It was an interesting talk Hokage-sama,? she stated briskly. ?And do not tamper in the life of my Hiraku, he has enough on his plate as it is already.? And then she left the room, leaving a fuming Tsunade to completely destroy her room in her sober rage.

?Sakura was right after all,? thought Tsunade as she threw a chair against the wall. ?I?m sorry Naruto. I had no clue how horrible your mother was; I only hope that you won?t have to put up with her.?

    ---

?Been a long road to follow
    been there and gone tomorrow
    without saying goodbye to yesterday
are the memories I hold still valid??

Her lamenting voice echoed throughout all of Konoha as she sang the song trapped deep within her own heart.

?Or have the tears deluded them?
    maybe this time tomorrow
the rain will cease to follow
and the mist will fade into one more today?

She sat on top of the Hokage Monument in the freezing rain on the day of March 24th, the day of the funeral of Hyūga Neji. He had die a week before in the hospital after the second coming of the Kyūbi.

?Something somewhere out there keeps calling
    am I going home??

She couldn?t go to the funeral. She wouldn?t be able to stand the looks she?d get from the rest of her family. Those stoic looks that all of them except for herself had mastered and wore perpetually, like a permanent impenetrable mask.

She didn?t want to dishonor the spirit of her cousin by showing such weakness in public. But most of all, she didn?t want her sister to see her cry again.

After the day of the second coming, Hanabi refused to even meet her gaze and responded in very short answers. It deeply upset her, even more so than when her father began to treat her more like a burden than as a daughter because she had always believed that Hanabi and herself shared a special bond.

A bond of understanding that only sisters could have.

    Could she have been wrong?

?Will I hear someone singing solace to the silent moon?
    zero gravity what's it like?
    am I alone??

In her remembrance she didn?t notice the person walking up behind her.

?Hinata? Why aren?t you at Neji?s funeral?? the person behind her asked.
