It depends on what you class as mainstream anime.

I recommend Kyousougiga. It is probably one of my favourite animes of all time, and it went relatively unnoticed when it first aired.

Give us some examples of what you have previously watched and enjoy, and what you consider "mainstream" besides the obvious ones: Bleach, Naruto, One Piece, Hunter x Hunter, Attack on Titans, Fairy Tail, Code Geass, DB/DBZ/DBS, Death Note, FMA, Soul Eater, Gatari, etc...

A non-mainstream anime? Depends on the genre that you like to watch here.

For the really, really good ones, let's start off with something like...
    • Noir
    • Blast of Tempest
    • Bubblegum Crisis (Both the TV and the OVA series)
    • Blue Gender
    • Cardcaptor Sakura (Watch everything)
    • Kino's Journey
    • Romeo x Juliet
I'd list more, but watch those first. Unless you're into romcoms like Amagami/Seiren or something...

This was a fun watch way back.

My fave from recent years is Welcome to the Ballroom, short yet sweet.

Gunbuster and Diebuster are both jam-packed with action, yes.

Just going to leave a note that if you want to casually watch something, start with the movies/OVA instead of watching entire series, because binge watching those episodes are going to be a chore.

I'm in the same boat man. I've already hit most of the "popular/mainstream" anime, and going to those deep and dark places and finding good stuff is hard.

But I watched Tasogare Otome x Amnesia. A fun series with some heartfelt moments. Plus, I enjoyed it a helluva lot more than I thought I would.

For me Space Adventure Cobra and Golgo 13.

Also Desert Punk, which has an amazing dub. I'm sad this one isn't more known or watched.

A-fucking Men. Keijo is a hype train, and one of the more original battle shounens I've had the pleasure of watching. That judo slam was one of the hypest scenes of last year. :catshivers

Is Fate Zero considered Mainstream? It isn't quite on the level of FMAB, DN or HxH in terms of popularity.

I suppose it still would be though.

I usually only stick to the mainstream stuff because you can talk about it with more people.

Most non-mainstream thing I've probably seen is Shigurui. It wasn't bad, but didn't have any closure. Almost Berserk-level fucked up though.

I love Seki Master of Killing Time (AKA My Neightbour Seki). I love that the whole premise is based around something so mundane. The producation values aren't that high. But its so funny and charming and relatable that I can't help but love it.

Although frankly most of the time any manga that doesn't revolve around either romances that are stretched out by simple, unrealistic misunderstandings; people being trapped in a video game like world, or the threat of the world being engulfed in vague darkness for no good reason is a breath of fresh air.

I’ll second tonari no seki-kun. That show was fucking awesome cuz it’s so creative with how you can kill time in a boring classroom.

    Nichibros is a fuckawesome comedy.

Someone mentioned fate/zero which is easily a 9+

Someone also mentioned kyousougiga which was pretty good

Try new getter robo. Dope as fuck action/mecha anime.

I don't know what's considered "main stream" but I really enjoyed Golden Time. To this day I still think about it.

Mainstream just means that it's well known enough that you can reasonably expect most people to have heard of it. Like MHA, dragonball/GT/super/Z, pokemon , HunterXHunter, FullMetal Alchemist... tokyo ghoul.. death note... I think you get the point but also Fairytail and one piece.... So many more... :catcry

Thanks for the suggestion i'll check it out :catshades

Slayers is good, it has the right amount of humor but knows when to be serious. The first three seasons are highly recommended.

I also recommend Android Kikaider. It's only 13 episodes, followed by a 4 episode OVA series, which I never did get to see.

Is Outlaw Star considered to be "mainstream?"

If it is, my favorite non-mainstream series are Zoids and Monster Farm (known as Monster Rancher in North America), because, while they may not share the company of the best of shonen series, they are very enjoyable in their own right.

I'm just using this thread to blurt out some of my favorites. Some of them might actually be popular what do I know:

-Mankind has declined/jinrui wa suitai shimashita (surreal comedy)

    -Katanagatari (drama w/some comedy)

    -Kamisama Dolls (drama w/some comedy)

    -Death Parade (holy fuck drama)

-Tanaka is Always Listless (comedy with a lot of mumbling)

-Akatsuki no Yona (drama w/comedy. Its logo says it's a "historical romance" even though it has magic and takes place in not-Korea)

    -Hataraku no maou-sama (brilliant comedy)

-Cross Ange (I don't even know how to classify this it's actually horrible but I love it)

    -Wagamoto (depressing comedy)

    -Kyoukai no Rinne (nonsensical comedy)

    -Hyouka (mystery)

-Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku Wo (comedy that doesn't give a shit)

(also I'll go ahead and second Sankarea, Kyousagiga, Kino's Journey, and third Tonari no Seki-kun)

Is Cowboy Bebop mainstream? It was really famous in his time... If it is...Princess tutu (is good, dont let the ballet blind you) Rahxephon, and Moribito.
