Yeah, I'm in trouble. Before this, me and my pretty little Ati Radeon 9600 were getting along fine. We cuddled all day, and played games, not on full detail, sure. I had to cut down things at games like Half Life 2 and Oblivion, but they were playable! And WoW ran on full details normally.
But then, I suppose I had some spyware or something, because my computer got slower and slower..
I formatted it, and decided to buy a card while I'm on it, I got suggested to buy an Nvidia GeForce FX5500.
    Oh God.
    It's SHIT.
It clenches and whimpers at the LOG IN SCREEN of WoW!
And then I tried Oblivion, well..
0.5/fps should be enough to explain my feelings.
    Now, I returned the card and am getting my money and old card today, but the question stands;
Which card should I buy? Something cheap, but a little better than my current card. It doesn't need to be superfast, just something a bit better than my current card, just enough to make a visible, pleasing difference.
I'll also be happy if you just point me to a website with graphics card stats and comparings.
    Puhlease help. :wtf

eww a GeForce FX....my friend has a FX 5200 and he hardly run cs 1.6 on it.

here's a website for testing and comparing graphics cards.

just pick your model and the game u want to test it with. Then you should go to newegg and look it up. Hope this helps.

I absolutely have no idea, I'll tell you when I get it back today or tomorrow.
Or I'll make a call now.
The bitch is not opening, let me try to remember or find a clue.
    EDIT: Pro.
What would be a good choice compared to it?

sorry i didnt reply earlier,i was eating dinner its 7pm here
from what i can tell the 9600 is AGP and there arent many with the same price to compare to but i'd say if you dont mind spending a little more money(ok i lied maybe double or triple the cost of the 9600($50-60)) then go with the nVidia GeForce 7600GT [AGP 4x/8x version] or if you dont mind going quadruple lol go for the ATI Radeon X1950PRO [again the AGP 4x/8x]

NOTE-really depends on what AGP slot you have...i mean i've only seen the Radeon 9600 on newegg and all are AGP 4x/8x,also note that i dont know the store prices of the 7300GT or the X1950PRO i just got the prices ,again, off of newegg

What gave you the idea to buy an FX5500? That card is like 4-5 years old I think :)

For an average gamer you'd probably be best off buying a card that has a good price/performance ratio.

    That's a good review.

Seeing you'll be needing an AGP card, I'd most definitely be getting an ATI x1950 PRO. The ones by Sapphire get good ratings.

If you want an Nvidia, a 7900GS or 7900GT would be a good buy.

Now thats just bs, I had a 5200 and i can still run source cod2 games like that on it with like 70+ fps

If your on a budget though get a 7600gt you will probably see a huge difference in performance.

its not bs, im just telling what i saw. He had cs and had 60 fps then when i threw a smoke nade it dropped to 20-30 fps.

Also Frosty, u should get a 8800 gts that should be able to play half life 2 and oblivion no problem, unless ur on a budget. Then try to go for a 7600 GT or higher.

I believe the 8000 series from Nvidia are PCI-E only, so he can't use the 8800GTS.

The 7600 or 7900 should be enough, pick one depending on your budget.

it would depend on how long u want to keep your computer. if ur upgrading soon, like in a couple of months, wait. if ur holding out like a year or 2, get the x1950pro.
