Fruits Basket returns in 2019 with a new anime covering the FULL story, coming to FunimationNow!
November 19, 2018 by Nicholas Friedman

One of the most beloved shoujo manga series the world over, Fruits Basket was a hugely influential series that helped propel the late 90s/early 2000s anime boom in North America.

Funimation is absolutely ecstatic to announce that a brand-new Fruits Basket anime, now covering the ENTIRE story of the original manga, will be broadcast in 2019 with North American streaming on FunimationNow

We’ve been hearing the question, “Will there ever be a new season of Fruits Basket, covering the entire manga?” at conventions and on social media for years, and longtime North American fans will remember that over 13 years ago, you came together to fold over a thousand paper cranes to express your longing for a new series.
his new announcement is very meaningful to so many fans — as well as many of us in the Funimation office — and we can’t wait to see the new series!

You can read the full press release of the announcement here, including more details around the new series, plus comments from the original manga artist, Natsuki Takaya, who serves as executive supervisor to the new series. Takaya-sensei explains her feelings about the new series and the aspects that she prescribed for the production in the aforementioned press release.

    STAFF

Executive Supervisor: Natsuki Takaya (Author of the Fruits Basket manga originally published by Hakusensha’s Hana to Yume Comics)
    Director: Yoshihide Ibata
    Series Structure: Taku Kishimoto
    Character Design: Masaru Shindo
    Animation Produced by: TMS Entertainment

    CAST
    Manaka Iwami as Tohru Honda
    Nobunaga Shimazaki as Yuki Sohma
    Yuma Uchida as Kyo Sohma
    Yuichi Nakamura as Shigure Sohma

I've been meaning to watch the original, maybe I might be more inclined to watch it now.

I've heard that this is a remake, but not sure where I read that.

I was fucking screaming when I saw the news on tumblr. I thought I was dreaming. It's crazy cause a few weeks ago I was just yelling how I wanted an anime reboot

I wasn't expecting the new seiyuus, though I'm fine with them cause I like the ones announced so far. Though idk how I feel about that key art..

I heard the last anime adapted like 8 volumes out of the total 21 and this is a full adaptation. Surprised they are going all in with this, but its a pleasant surprise.

Wait, so are they going to continue off where the original anime ended? Or are they going to retell the entire manga storyline from the start?

I really liked this anime and manga. I think it was probably one of the biggest shoujo mangas during the 2000s. Surprised it took so long to continue it.

From what I hear they are adapting the entire series, but I don't know if they are going to continue off where the last anime ended. A sequel might not be the best for drawing in new fans.

Any idea how many episodes its going to be? Its a pretty long series. IIRC, the first anime stopped before revealing that:
    Spoiler:

Akito was a girl which is a pretty big spoiler.

Is it just me or are a lot of old animes getting revivals right now?

Couldn't even guess, but if they give it 26 episodes then it will probably feel rushed as hell, sequel or complete remake. Not sure how many episodes it would have.

To be fair, I don't think all the zodiac animals had even shown up in the manga when the original anime was made. The anime had to stop and make up its own ending ala Full Metal Alchemist because the manga was incomplete.

Does anyone know which studio is making it?

Yeah, like I said the original anime got Akito's gender wrong because that reveal wasn't made yet in the manga. The new anime will have to be significantly longer. I'm guessing with the new system of releasing anime in seasons it will cover multiple seasons.
