His Dark Materials is a fantasy series by Philip Pullman. It consists of three main books; The Northern Lights (or The Golden Compass in America), The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass, as well as two spinoff books, Lyra's Oxford and Once Upon A Time In The North. A series set before, during and after the main trilogy called The Book of Dust is in the works, and at the point that this is being written, the first volume (La Belle Sauvage) has been released. Another spin off book, based on Will, is planned.

There's an adaption of the first book into a movie (which I personally didn't really like, so I won't mention it beyond this comment), a video game based off this movie, a radio show, a stage play and a graphic novel.

Overall, the series isn't that powerful (infact it has one of the weakest characters of all time in it), but has a lot of hax, such as predicting the future, soul manipulation and travelling between universes. The series spans a multiverse, and there are a notable universes, like the main one (where the soul manifests outside the body as a daemon, or familiar), our universe, the mufula universe, the world of the dead and infinite more.

Let's start with some cosmology stuff. Reference to the multiple universes in the multiverse is confirmed in the introduction to the first book (this also appears in The Northern Lights, but slightly different).
Dust is a mysterious particle related to the consiousness of sentient beings. Dust falls from the Aurora Borealis and towards people. Dust is usually invisible to human eyes, and is only visible through special means. It gathers more around adults than children. Note also the reference to a "severed child." This is refering to the process of severing a someone from their daemon without killing them, which the Gobblers (Oblation Board) are experimenting on.
Dust falls from the Aurora Borealis, and through special means, glimpses of other universes can be seen (in particular, the city that appears in the second book).
The Barnes & Stokes heresy refers to how two experimental theologians (scientists) proposed the idea of a multiverse, and this was regarded as heresy by the Church.

Daemons are familiar-like manifestations of the soul/consiousness/self-awarness that everyone possesses. The daemon of a child can change form at will, but at puberty the daemon settles into a permanent form. They mostly take the forms of animals, birds or insects, but can also take the forms of humans or mythical creatures.
The state of the daemon effects the state of their human, and vice versa.
Touching someone elses daemon is absolute taboo. Even on the battlefield only humans fight humans and daemons fight daemons.
When someone dies, their daemon disappears.
Daemons can apparently see ghosts and spirits.
It takes strength for a daemon to change shape (the daemon of a child, of course).
Certain materials make daemons sleepy. Also, daemons can detect other daemons.

There are a variety of strange creatures and entities in Lyras world, such as night-ghasts (ghasts meaning a creature that formed from the body of the dead). A night-ghast awoke and tormented Lyra one night when she swapped the burial coins around in one of the basemends of Oxford, and later this reverted when she fixed it up (also Pan turns into a lion). The nigh-ghast takes the form of three individuals, and can move through walls.
Examples of other creatures and ghouls that live in the North, such as the Breathless Ones who are half dead warriors made by the Tartars, the Nalkainens which grab hold & don't let go, Windsuckers which drift through the air and suck out all the strength of those they touch and of course the panserbjørn (armoured bears).
Panserbjørn are semi-sentient great armoured bears who are wise in the ways of iron-forging (mainly meteoric iron) with their human-like hands. They work like mercenaries, and never break a promise.

Now onto the technological advancements of Lyra's world. For the most part it's Victorian-Era technology, but there are some impressive advancements. Experimental theology is this worlds term for science.
An example of their atomworks, with sails pushed and pulled by photons.
Lyra's world has atomworks, which from the sounds of it is research and experimentation onto atoms (possibly also nuclear experimentation).
Lyra's world has trucks and trams.
Zepplins are a common means of transport in Lyra's world, and may carry spy devices.

Dust is an elementary particle that doesn't act like other elementary particles or interact with them. They attracted to humans, but adults far more-so than children.

Usually a daemon is the opposite sex of their person (if you're male, the daemon is female; if you're female, the deamon is male), but there are exceptions to this, like daemons who are the same gender as their person.
Daemons can only travel a certain short distance from their person without causing strain.
Witches and their daemons however, can be miles away from each other with no strain. Infact there doesn't seem to be any limit to the distance them and their daemon can travel (The Amber Spyglass further cements this).
Killing a daemon kills the person they're connected with too.
Grabbings someone elses daemon creates nausea and robs the person of all strength.
An immense amount of energy exists in the bond between a human and their daemon, which disipates when the bonds are cut.

Intercission is the act of cutting someone off from their daemon (though when one of them dies, so does the other still). They do this so that children can be "safe" from Dust.
This is done through a special alloy guillotine (originally it was done by ripping the daemon away
Originally this was done by ripping the "patient" and their daemon apart, but for the most part this killed them. The Skraelings knew how to do this long beforehand, but with centuries of practice.

Dust (or the Rusakov particle) is an elementary particle (meaning it can't be broken down into any smaller particles) that acted in a very different way to normal elementary particles, and is thus extremely difficult to find. The Church view it as physical evidence of Original Sin.
Charging Dust with energy weakens the barriers between worlds, as the Northern Lights do. We also see how large the multiverse is; there are millions of universes overlapping each other in only a short space, with tens of millions overlapping in a goose (daemons) wing span. Witches have long known of these alternate worlds.

Witches live to be hundreds of years old (possible thousands) and do not feel the cold. Only a woman can be a witch. To fly, all they need is a pine-branch (any will do.
A witch's daemon can travel hundreds of miles from them.
Kaisa (Serafina Pekkala's daemon) throws up snow to hide footprints and make it look like a blizzard blew into the room and let all the severed daemons out and to hide Lyra's footprints.
That's not the only power he possesses though; he unlocks doors and cages by flapping his wings and clicking his throat.
Kaisa is noted to be stronger than Lyra. Though Lyra is just a 12 year old girl, I doubt your average goose is stronger than such.
Serafina and six other witches pull Lee's balloon along, and without them it would be blown away at a hundred miles an hour.

Iorek Byrnison is an exiled prince (later king) of the Svalbard bears (Panserbjørn). Svalbard Bears don't have daemons, instead, they forge armour of sky-iron (normal metals are considered worthless by comparison). We also see easily lift a metal engine cover and rip through it effortlessly.
The ease of him ripping through metal is noted later.
He's at least 10 feet (3.048m), and it notes how the gate keeping him imprisoned would be useless as a barrier if he truly wished to escape.
Iorke rocks a brick house, shattering windows and bringing down tiles from the roof.
Iorek effortlessly dons his metal armour (which is an inch thick in places), comparing it to a silk robe in terms of ease.
The armour weighs far more than two children, and he carries them like nothing.
Iorek can easily run and fight in this armour, even over long distances, and doesn't even seem to notice the weight of his massive armour. He takes out the Tar Tar guards easily.
Bullets bounce off his armour (also the larger bulk of the Tartar guards are deployed to fend off Iorek and fail).
lofur Raknison is noted to be even bigger than Iorek, and is covered in heavy gold chains. His claws are 6 inches (15.24cm) long.
Iofur roars so loudly that the chandeliers sway in his halls.
Iorek (on top of describing how he can effortlessly kill a man or seal) says how bears can't be tricked, as they aren't human. He then demonstrates, by having Lyra try to fool him, and he sees past all her feints and blocks all her blows. A bear can only be fooled when they act like a human. Also Lyra states that she thinks Iorek can deflect bullets.
Iorek and Iofur's fight, in which the ground itself shakes, Iofurs armour is damaged and they throw each other around (we also see several impressive metaphors for their power). Iorek ends the fights by smashing Iofurs jaw off, ripping his throat out, then ripping his heart out and eating it. Iofur is noted to be stronger, but Iorek wins in anycase, due to outsmarting his opponent.
    Description of Iofur's armour.
Iorek not only won this fight, but he wasn't at his best; he'd previously run for a day on end (in his armour too) without food or water.
Iofur slices open a seal and smashes its skull in two blows to test his strength.
The bears start tearing down Iofur's stone palace afterwards, rocking the walls and throwing down big blocks of marble.
A bear knocks Lyra out of the way of an arrow.

The Svalbard bears have a weapon called a fire thrower, which throws fire over great distances at their enemies.
It brings down a zeppelin with a hundredweight of blazing rock (a hundredweight is about 50.8023kg).
The zeppelin is armed with a machine gun, though this cannot pierce the bears armour (though some are unlucky enough to be hit in the flesh and fall).
    Lyra's world has vans.

Witches can see things that ordinary humans can't. They noticed an air of hate and fear around Bolvangar.
Iorek lifts and reshapes metal like it's no more than cardboard, and lifts the whole tractor with a single paw.
Iorek leaps into the air (with his armour and all) and grabs hold of Lees balloon, then climbs inside. Lee's balloon can also support Ioreks mass.
As a childs daemon shapeshifts, their mass also changes. How they do this is unknown.
Further evidence that witches don't feel the cold.

The alethiometer is a device like a compass which can tell the truth (though it has to be read through symbols, which makes it hard for most people to read it, though Lyra can read it fine, being a child). It's powered by Dust.
Only 6 exist in the world.
The alethiometer can tell the truth, both in the past, present and future.
The alethiometer foresaw how Lyra accidently betrayed Roger into the hands of Lord Asrael.
An example of it telling the truth of something that happened.
The alethiometer not only informs Lyra of something that is currently happening, but also seemingly rebukes her for asking the same question twice.

There are countless billions of worlds in the multiverse. For every decission and choice, a new universe is created (for example, if a coin is flipped, if it comes down as one side in this universe, it will come down as the other side in another universe. This happens of a sub-atomic level, meaning that there is truly a numberless amount of universes (possibly infinite).
Lyra's destiny is to end destiny. Should she fail, all life across the multiverse will end forever.
Dust exists everywhere in the universe (and also the multiverse), and is filled with intentions.

The energy of the Northern Lights weakens the barriers between worlds, and as light from one universe can pass to another, so could a gate be opened, with a tremendous amount of energy.
Asrael plans to create a gate to another universe through the Northern Lights using the energy contained in the bonds between a child and a daemon.
Using a wire connection with the help of a witch and technology, Lord Asrael controls the aurora borealis, or draws power from it. Said aurora borealis is ten thousand miles long and a thousand miles wide.
Asrael attaches Rogers daemon to his devices, and the energy released from Rogers bond rips the aurora borealis apart, creating a doorwar between universes. The sound of this reaches from one end of the universe to the other.

While witches can't turn invisible, they can alter the minds of those around them to make themselves unnoticeable (though they have to concentrate on this constantly, and it would leave her exhausted).

Descriptions of the environmental effects of Lord Asraels gateway being opened. There are great atmospheric disturbances that blow the witches many miles away, .
Parts of the ocean drained away, and a squid 100 feet (30.48m) long devoured 3 unfortunate fishermen.
The ice cracks, the earth stirs, permafrost defrosts and the magnetic fields of the planet itself is messed with.

Spectres are etherial entities that devour the souls of their victims. They can only see adults though, and they can't see children. They are filled with malice (also witches can feel malice).
    Spectres feeding.
An arrow goes straight through a Spectre and does nothing.
Spectres have existed in the world of Cittagazze for 300 years, ever since some philosophers made the Subtle Knife to travel between worlds. After Azrael opens his portal, many more Spectres enter the world of Cittagazze. Also, some information on the Spectres not harming children and people took things from other worlds, like magpies.

References to the War in Heaven thousands of years ago (around 30,000 years ago).
Another great portal like Azraels between Lyra's world and another had been opened many thousands of years ago, during the original War in Heaven (and given the description, the same natural disasters occurred back then as they did now).
In our world, 30,000 or 40,000 years ago is the earliest known point of Dust being attracted to humans.
Reference to events 33,254 years ago, and how there's more Dust around the trepanned heads than the one killed by an arrow (as added by the alethiometer).

Dust in our world is known as Dark Matter, or Shadows. It binds the universe together.
Shadows are conscious, and grant consciousness upon sapient
Shadows are abundent around things made by humans; there's none on an ordinary piece of wood or ivory, but they're all over ivory and wood carvings (the Cave is the name of their computer to detect Dark Matter and allows someone to communicate with it, and is named after Platos Cave).
