I posted that on my blog on IGN. And thought I should post it here, to see what other people think.

I apologize it's so long, but it's something I thought should be put out there. I think animations are even more important in games than graphics. Does anyone agree with me?

    White Knight for PS3.

Case and point animation makes the game so much better.

Animation for me, though I always thought that people put animation and framerate and whatnot in the graphics department now. There's no point to playing a game with a high polygon rate, or clear hi res sprites if the frame rate is crappy....unless it's a 2d rpg or something. That one can get away with a little I guess.

I'm confused. Are we comparing pre-rendered stuff to in-game stuff or what? Are animations not a part of the graphics?

Animations are how things look when the move, graphics just are pretty.

    So your saying...

    In-game graphics vs. Pre-rendered graphics

    ...right?

That's not even debatable, in-game is all that matters. Cinema scenes are just to make fools who like pretty stuff buy the game at the sight of a trailer...

Edit: I mean, don't get me wrong. I LOOOVVVEEE some kick-a$$ cinema scenes in uber-CG. But still, it's just eye candy, what it looks like when I'm playing is what's truly important.

Final Fantasy = The win for cinema's :) But no he's not talking about that :p He's saying graphics compared to how swift the people move.

    ...ok...

So like, your comparing how a character looks, rendered, to how fluid the animations are?

So, like, for example. I played Fight Night 3 on the 360 the other day. The characters look great. But I noticed when I hit the guy, on rare occasion, things like my glove going through his head and stuff occured. That drives me nuts. In that case, yes, I would much rather not have those animation glitches than have realistically sweating character graphics...

well, i don't think cinemas are actual graphics either.
it's like just putting movie clips in a game

I agree too, I rank graphics pretty low if not the lowest on the gaming priortity. Having a smooth game is very important to the game play.

But outside the above two, I rank storyline the top. :)

EDIT: To the discussion above: I don't think you can say cinematics are not part of graphics, it's just part of it. They might not be that crutial to the game overall but they really highlight the big moments in the games. Besides I've known people to just play games just for cinematics in a game. >.>

I'd take animation over graphics any day, just as long as the graphics aren't horribly ugly.

Take DMC 3 for example, the praphics were pretty good, and the reason they weren't mind blowing is because the designers wanted to make the animation spectacular, and boy was that trade-off worth it.

On the other hand, RE4 and KH 2 is proof that you can have awesome animation and awesome graphics at the same time.

Neither Animations or Graphics make a game. I would rather play a game that looked like someone threw Fecal matter at my TV, but had a good storyline and Gameplay. As opposed to one that looked really purty, but actually played like that shit on the TV screen.

That's not what's being questioned. It's not gameplay vs graphics vs animation in a free for all. It's just graphics vs animation. What I'm trying to get at is, answer the question and/or start a new thread with what you're talking about if you wanted to discuss gameplay (which I do agree with you about, but this wasn't the time or the place for it).

I agree that gameplay is more important than graphics. I think you'd have to be fairly stupid to disagree with that point, but the point of this thread is whether you care about animations or graphics more.

I think animations are extremely important (as illustrated by my first post), gameplay is more important, but I was talking from a visual aspect.

I also agree that art is very important to the visual aspect, but if there is a complete lack of animation but still good art it won't be as immersive as a beautifully animated with less beautiful art style.

I rank them in this way: Animations > Art >>>> Graphics

Or something similar. Art and animation come close in my mind, but a perfectly-animated game will take my breath away even more than a wonderfully artistic game.
