The star destroyer's tie fighter squadron has equal numbers to the Gallactica's Viper squadron.

Battle field: Deep space with no obstacles (ie. no planets, asteroids, derilics etc. nearby)

The galactica loses badly. Especially if the TIE complement is optimized with not even defenders, scimtars and advanced would do. The only thing that the galactica has is nukes. If its flack shield could stop even the barest percent of the turbolasers then it might have a chance but without shields all it has is armor against those monsters which are nearly nuclear in their power alone. God help them if the destroyer has a baradium missile. A star destroyer can reduce a planets crust to molten slag in a few days. Not good odds.

Galactica would be hard pressed to beat a strike cruiser.

I didn't figure that the star destroyers were so tough (I fell in the movie trap).

What is the effective range of the weapons on a star destroyer?
How effective would Vipers be against Tie fighters?
Tie fighters vs. Gallactica flak fire?

Gallactica armour can resist a nuke but definitely not sustained nuke powered attacks...

Effective range is orbital at least, so 50+ miles, though the various games and movies are all over about the range, this for certain is a possibilty and thus is a good baseline. The terawatt power of the Turbolaser as calculated is probably overkill but still is a baseline.

The Vipers have no shileds, no inertial compesnators, travel at well below light speed (ties and other space supiriority figthers have been clocked at .95C without hyperdrive) and don't cary laser based weapons. They don't have shields and are less maneuverable, due to lack of inertial compesation. A tie pilot can literally perform any maneuveur his ship can survive without damage.

Latest generation tie fighters, like the TIE Defender are equipped with propulsion that can bring them up to attack speed in a fraction of the time of a standard tie and outclasses everything else on the market. 4 linked laser cannon a pair of ion cannons, Thermal Detonator bomb bays, two torpedo/advanced missile tubes, and a tractor beam round out the pacakge. As opposed to the two short ranged 100m/less vulcans on a viper and chemical thrust.

    You're joking, right?

Galactica is hurt by kiloton - level nukes, TIE fighters have more powerful weapons than that. An Acclimator - class troop transport (antiquated compared to an ISD and much less powerful) has turbolasers rated at 200 gigatons, and those are only it's medium turbolasers, not the heavy ones. Its shields also can dissipate 16 teratons of energy per second. Keep in mind this is an antique troop transport, not a dedicated battleship like an ISD. Even light turbolasers are in the megaton range, and (if their target does not employ any type of electronic jamming), a SW ship can hit it at ranges measured in light - seconds, whereas BSG engagements always take place at ranges of only a few kilometers. BSG ships don't even have shields, for crying out loud!
