Shinobu basically had an impassioned speech to everyone detailing what Oden was doing these past 5 years and how he protected everyone.

    Has your view changed?

    He's still a fool.

"We promise we'll leave in 5 years" implies that they want to avoid any confrontation with him. That Oden has the power and the upper hand.

"We'll kill people unless you dance like an idiot" implies the exact opposite of the above.

I can't imagine how these two different statements made in succession make sense to anyone. Oden should have said "Fine, you'll leave in 5 years, you won't kill anyone, and I'm not dancing."

    Oden is naive as fuck.

But Wano ppl are the true assholes this chapter, from Orochi's clan to Oden execution.

Oden didn't know about the Kurozomi's story, so maybe he wouldn't had helped ppl if he had known.

Of course it hasn't changed. He was beyond idiotic to believe them about leaving the island if he danced naked for years.

And it was obvious that doing this circus caused far greater damage and fatalities and suffering to everyone in the country than 100 hostages.

Just think about it, there is nothing super cunning or Yonko—strength about grabbing some folks. By that logic any goon that manages to grab a handful of peasants as soon as he lands can seize control of the country and humiliate the shogun.

This is just mental. It's not how country invasions work.

Yeah let's have some guy who wants to see the country get destroyed, stay on the throne.

Also let's trust the dictator with his sob story who just executed my best friend's wife to keep his word.

By the way, he'll definitely keep his promise when factories are erupting left and right for 5 years straight that obviously gonna need workers. We'll just ignore the daily executions in the newspapers. Those must've been bandits, not people who refused to work till death.

Nope, everything is fine. The lives of the 100 have saved Wano for hundreds of years. Ofcourse all those who follow Orochi, will love the country as dearly as him. Not like they'll continue his policy for centuries after his death or anything. Not an issue there.

    Yep, he's no fool.

The translation implies that Orochi was more comfortable self destructing to get his revenge than Oden was allowing hundreds of people to die.

Oden is certainly less of a fool in my opinion. I probably would have still killed Orochi and Kaido though.

It was as weak an explanation as everyone expected.

The only way Oda could have redeemed Oden for me would be if Orochi showed him something unbelievable, like relating to one piece or the void century.

But the standard hostage situation bullshit, and telling Oden to apologise was ridiculous. Oden is a dumbass, it wasn't 'plot induced stupidity' by the way, Oden is just that stupid, from the very moment he was introduced he's always been a dumbass, there was nothing plot related about it.

Orochi: Terrorizes wano for years, people are abused and die in his factories
    Oden:

    Orochi: Twerk for your people
    Oden: Yes SIR

Oden: Orochi make ship Kaido go away :dumbpepe

    Makes perfect sense :lmao

The citizens of every country are true assholes until the arc is about to end. In fishman island they were hesitant to give Luffy blood even though he just saved them, in Dressrosa the people were treating Rebecca like the same as the Kurozumi clan.

To be fair, he didn't really had any other options left.

Either they all die, either he try a last card, hoping Kaido for once will keep his promise.

So it's an all or nothing situation.

At least he tried, and we know Kaido eventually kept his promise since the scabbards are alive.

No he is not a fool. He just tried to do things to have less casualties possible.
His only wrong his to have believe that they will leave but except for the all knowing readers, he could not have known for sure that they were lying.

He tried to do the right thing. Calling someone a fool for that, just show a lack of empathy and understanding.

You would think with travelling around the world and seeing pirates firsthand he would not be this naive.

And yet he still continues to believe in Kaido and Orochi's lies...

Nah the nicest country till this day is Water 7.

    Viva La Water 7!! :blessed

Oden's people were waiting for him to dethrone Orochi because of how he was running the place. Odens retainers were telling him how terrible he was treating everyone and how he was killing people who wouldn't work in his factories and told him how they attacked his own family and while on his way to deal with the bloody problem Oden was telling himself that Orochi is the most cowardly cat in all of Wano that would lead their country straight to hell and he had to be put down. To all of a sudden change his mind and believe that things would change if a deal was made is the most naive thing he could've done after everything he knew about him.

He knew what kind of person he was dealing with and did it anyway and as I posted above HE'S STILL DOING IT :catdefeat

If Oden fought back at that moment, many people would die. He didn't know if he he'd win either. He played it safe to save as many lives as possible and that was the reason he was dancing in every region so that he could see that everyone was fine. Oden succeeded at that since Orochi and Kaido didnt touch anyone for 5 years until the Hyogoro event.

The plot is stupid. The 5 year waiting is just too damn long. There was no way a good reason would come out of this.
5 year to build a ship :whatthe
It would have been just fine (but still dumb) if all of this happened during a single year.

Still thinking Oda made a mistake in the timeline and just came up with this quickly to somehow bridge the gap until Odens execution.

We all knew that his heart was in the right place, even if his head is empty.

This just confirms it. So he wasn't just protecting hypothetical people, but there were in fact a hundred people already on the chopping block.

I'm fine with it. People were thinking it would be logical if Sukiyaki was still alive and he was protecting his father, but in truth him being willing to do it for ordinary citizens works for me too.

I still think Oden becoming Shogun and then being deposed for wanting to open the borders was the vastly superior narrative, but here we are.

Him taking the boiling for his troops is infinitely badass though.

Considering the behavior of the Orochi clan and their apparent genetic selfishness and narcissism it could be argued that the Wano people's true failing was not killing them all off when they had the chance.

No, the flashback was Orochi telling Oden that history so he would understand why he was after revenge against the whole island. He was giving a motive rant as a threat.

I don't think it was just the hostages. The hostages were part of the carrot. Their deal was, if you sacrifice your pride, we'll build a ship and leave, and you'll get to save these people.

The stick was Oden would've had to have fought Kaido in the middle of the Flower Capitol and he couldn't kill Orochi because he was under Seminaru's barrier. The hostage situation doesn't work without Kaido's strength behind it.

Well, since all of his retainers are still alive, this gamble apparently paid off.

I think it's worth pointing out that Oden's primary view of pirates and interacting with them comes directly from Whitebeard and Roger, two of the more honorable pirates in history. And pirates who believed in freedom and the call of the open sea, Whitebeard couldn't wait to get off Wano. Kaido wanting to set up shop would be new to him.

In that particular instance that was a single case, the first instance.

However, disobeying the Shogun actually was an offense legally punishable by death in Feudal law.

Luffy is smarter than Oden and dumber than Roger.
