He's a badass character but not a quality character. Quality characters are people who aren't just badass but also have a fleshed out backstory and an actual personality. Senior Pink as goofy as he is would qualify as a quality character.

Because of Zoro's immaculate record when it comes to power level, people have created this narrative that his character is one dimensional or surface level so that

"only the kids like him cuz theyre not an intellectual like me" It's just reaching. I mean consider this, why did you make this thread?

But any multi faced analysis shows you that Zoro is easily one of the character with the most depth.

edit: Soca's comment above is prime evidence.

    He does tho?

Kuina, the school, Johnny, Yosaku, the wandering pirate hunter days, etc.
His personality is just like any other's, it might not be for everyone but it's hard to say that it doesn't exist.

Like when Usopp left and Zoro manned up to stop Luffy from being a pushover, that's not something just anyone can do.

Most of the SHs are quality if you only rank them on being badass, having backstory, and personality. Robin had Ohara backstory, Chopper had Hiruluk, Nami had Bellemere and Arlong, etc, etc.

Zoro comes off dumb with the whole directionless baboon gag, but when it comes down to it after Luffy he has a lot of pull with the crew.

    Liking Zoro's personality is subjective.

There is a difference between not appreciating a character with introspection (probably the only character in One Piece that has this aside from old ones like rayleigh and sengoku) and that's easy going with whether he HAS a personality or IS a quality character. (those are objectives)

He's not outgoing like Senor Pink, I'll give you that.

But aside from that, he's 1000s of year old and trans cultural archetype of The man of action. You either like it or not. But his character says a lot based on the emotions Oda draws on him. If you do a montage of his expressions compared to others an interesting pattern is going to appear.

hint: Zoro's character works because of his strong sense of individualism and agency.

I legit feel sorry for anyone who thinks Zoro doesn't have a personality.

I guess the grandmaster is too good to be understood by mere peasants. Most characters talk and can't walk the walk. Zoro focuses on walking the walk rather than talking. He's all about taking actions, not making fake promises (inb4 someone posts his promise after his defeat to mihawk then posts a panel of the yeti cool brothers haha so funny)

I thought the panel in the latest chapter where he licked his sword's edge was pretty disappointing. Like c'mon, licking your sword? What are you, some bargain bin bad guy like abdullah and jeet? :giogio

But that's pretty much par for the course in post-skip. Too much edge.

In a crew of goofballs, he's very different, nice breath of fresh air a lot of times

Up until recently Sanji was conspicuously the least fleshed out of the crew, and now I think Zoro has taken his place

The WSS thing has fizzled out like All Blue did before it, but I think like sanji Zoro will have a late game character arc, we are in wano right now after all

I expect a major twist incoming for him as it relates to his origin, sanji had one of course, Luffy did too with sabo, nami's origin relates to Jimbei, usopp still has yasopp to go, and Robin will have relevance with the poneglyphs still

Something will happen with zoro here soon that will change people's perceptions of him

I see what the mods are trying to do here :hestonpls

One complains about Zoro not being a quality character because of his missing backstory

while not wanting him to have a backstory tbh

And the other tries to bury JayJays closed thread with new found interest in Zoro while saying stuff like this in 2016.

What do you think @jayjay³² :catskully

There's nothing different to what I said then to what I'm saying now. The op in that thread asked if there was any need for an in depth exploration into zoro's past which I said no because his character is only meant to be a badass.

His thread is pointless to this, if you take shitposts so seriously nor can't change your opinion in 2 years I don't know what to tell you. Way to cherry pick though. What's next you're gonna find a post from 2012 about me liking a 17 year old and call it pedophilia? :fatcat

Zoro's always been one of my top 3 chars next to Luffy and Law (before he was introduced it was a tossup tho), one thing has nothing to do with the other, but gold star for at least trying.

OP asked if Zoro alrdy is a quality character while you said no because he is a badass that is missing backstory. Obviously to change your opinion if he is a quality character, he needs to be expanded on which you don't want him to get as quoted by me.

I admire that you like Zoro so we have somehing in common and i don't blame you for that it's just that this thread comes way to early from someone who associates well with the staff. Could've waited at least a couple of days before trying to save face in the OL for the decision your fellow staff mate did not long ago. Too many coincidences.

Not going to address the pedo stuff and cherry-picking, that's not what i specialize in.

I'm almost certain Zoro will get an additional backstory this arc. If not in the middle or end, then after Kaidou's defeat. the very end of the arc. Luffy got an extra one after MF. Sanji got one after that, it's time Zoro gets one.

This is Oda literally fleshing out the strongest members of the SHs. flesh out their strength, their emotions and resolve. Luffy by using Ace and then the come back. Sanji by his family's situation. Zoro ???? soon to be found out

Oda is making his strongest people ready to conquer the new world. and yes we all hate sanji but he will catch up somehow using the raid suit.

Can you, off the top of your head, name something meaningful that Zoro has added to the story post-timeskip?

And by meaningful I don't mean some attack coupled with an unimaginative one-liner. Some role he has played in the crew.. Some defining moment.. Some important act driving the story forwards in some way. Anything like that.

Is that right? Well let me tell you a story, young wiggian.

Once upon a time, a little black kid named Marcelle Soca was a fan of Zoro. He'd fangasm when he one shotted his enemies like Hody

He'd wear sets of Zoro (I don't have a screenshot obviously but it was of this scene from the 3d movie)

    Spoiler:

and even made Zoro edit threads for fun (every OG in here knows the one I'm fucking talking about :pimp)

But one day, lil Marcelle Soca grew up and just wanted more than the badass. He wanted a grown up like him and invested in characters like Jinbei, who was boring to everyone else but cool for him. Now just because I'm not losing my nuts over Zoro anymore doesn't mean I hate him, I just don't like him as much as I used too. That's what's terrible about certain fans. Y'all will take any kind of distaste for a character and suddenly turn it into hate when that's never the case most of the time.

    It's really subjectif.

It's a character like we've seen a lot in other shonen. But I see no reason for me to hate him. Not being found of is one thing. Hating is another.

He is the character that understand the most luffy, and have a closure personality with him than most. He was the first to recognise how important luffy's dream is, so was ready to give his life instead, without asking any kind of reward (despite how much important his dream is for him)

He is like the grand brother of the family.(Especially for chopper) Like every member of the crew he may sounds stupid sometime (sense of direction, like Sanji with the nosebleed ,luffy's credulity...) from the start I've always see him as a man who wich to live and die according to his principle. No matter what.

He is funny , humble, serious when needed , loyal and badass, and train hard . That's why most people don't hate him. And that's why young readers are found of him (he is like an ideal , wich is why he got so much fanboys, and some haters by the same time, wich is juvenile in both cases).

But in the end , what make him so appreciated by the fans : he is a nobody. He was a young failure , so he trained like hell to be able to reach kuina. No matter how much he lost , he try again.

He is no D , no royalty , no devil fruit user, no robot , no CoC user ,no whatever, just a guy like many others (like ussop) who train 3 times more than most to keep an average level with the high tier of grand line like the SN.

Countrary to some claims , he is not a perfect overcheated character. He lose some fight , and need to train a lot. He promise to never lose but lose again , yeah , because that's how his mind work : he have to reach his goal whatever it take. How many time you fall doesn't matter , it's how many time you stand up.

You want me to give you TRUE overcheated character ? The kind that never lose even when they have all reason to, and are more liked for their badassity to the point it get boring ? Erza , mikasa ackerman , or livai.

Countrary to OTHER claims he is not useless. He play a role like the rest of the crew and saved them many times ( nami at alabasta , ussop at dressrossa, brook and sanji at PH ect ...).

His dream sounds boring. I know. He don't want to change the world , don't want to rule over the sea , make an end to a war, change the system. He only want to realise a promise.

He is either your type of character either not. Most of his hater are either sanjitards who want to wank sanji over him, or people who are sick of his fanboys. But hating someone for his fans make no sens ...

The only valid criticism about his character is about his past, and his post time skip portrayal : We don't know anything about him. Why did he want to turn to swordman at all ? Where did he come from ? Are his parent dead ? Oda should tell us more.

He is one shoting fodders from the start. I think he don't even respect them the way he did with kaku and daz. One is a women (so no worth killing) one is a coward who hide a flee and hit injured people (pica) one was boring to death(hyouzo) ....

How is that interesting to watch ?

He still have memorable moment :

He stood with luffy at Jaya .
    His sacrifice at thrillerbark.
He swallowed his pride and asked mihawk to train him for luffy sake.
His respect for other oppenent like wiper , kaku ect.
And the times where he remember luffy his role as captain. (PH, W7).

Watever oda may do for him at wano , I hope he don't reveals he is the son of whatever king , legend and shit.

No, it's pretty clear you don't like Zoro as a character (everyone keeps making the same observation when it comes to your Zoro posts). And you don't have to like certain characters, that's fine, but the denial isn't really doing you justice. Example:
This just isn't true. Zoro doesn't have the most eccentric or colorful personality, which is a valid criticism, but there's no lack of personality when it comes to Zoro. In fact, I'd argue that Zoro's personality is what drives his following. Zoro's following comes from the fact that he has the leadership and character traits of Luffy without too much of the goofiness.

It depends on what you mean by meaningful. He's already stopped a few threats post-TS, told Luffy to stop messing around in the NW, and has always had the bluntest interactions in the crew which always sets up a meaningful conversation (think back to Sanji leaving for the wedding).

The timing of this question is interesting, since we're about to see Zoro take a bigger role post-TS in the manga, when he's mostly been left to assist the cast or low-diff people.
