Generally speaking, through hype/statements/feats (equally held), who is higher on a tier list....

And secondly, who'd win the fight?

Hanzo was suggested to be able to beat Pain if he didn't get rusty and lose his belief upon which Pain is above Itachi so portrayal wise I'd go with Hanzo. In a fight it's hard to say since we don't know even half of Hanzo's but I'd side with him though I guess it could go either way

Hanzo, he was portrayed as capable of defeating Pain if he hadn't lost his conviction. That alone places Hanzo well above Itachi, let alone prime Hanzo.

Hanzo is up there with Prime Hiruzen and Minato on my list. Physically and permanently damaging a prime Nagato's legs is something I doubt Itachi could pull off by himself or with back up.

Jiraiya challenged Nagato after knowing he beat Hanzo, and only opted to use SM because of Nagato's Rinnegan - not because Nagato beat Hanzo. When he reached SM he said "I'll be home soon" or something to that effect. All this implies to me that Jiraiya - who faced prime Hanzo - believed he was stronger than him now (i.e he thought he might be able to beat the man who defeated Hanzo).

Yes, and Mifune got better and defeated him. :catshrug

Just like how Sasori defeated Kankuro, but then Kankuro defeated him during the war arc.
or how Hasi defeated Asspulldara when they were alive, then lost to him during the war.

    and so on... :catshrug

Well Jiraiya knew Pain killed Hanzo and he still went ahead with his mission..Just sayin, Itachi has a lot of ways to kill Hanzo if we go by their showings

Jiraiya didn’t believe that anyone in the Akatsuki could defeat Hanzo, Pein believed that if Hanzo kept trading instead of getting rusty he would have won, and Hanzo wiped out the three young Sannin and a legion of men with what was likely mid difficulty.

Jiraiya directly stated that he did not believe the story that Pein killed Hanzo.

Yea but he didnt dismiss the possibility of Pain killing Hanzo completely..You're making it sound like Jiraiya was in complete denial mode

He only opined about it once and said he didn’t believe. He thought about it without saying anything else and spat out Naruto’s seal. If we look at Jiraiya’s actions immediately after being told it gets worse if anything, as Jiraiya decides to treat the situation like he could easily die.

To be honest it seemed like he's surprised and in awe at first, but then he asks "how was Hanzo killed? what are Pain's abilities?" which implies he did believe it - at least in the end.

Also, it makes sense to me that that scene was to hype Nagato in front of Jiraiya i.e "Be wary Jiraiya, this guy called Pain is so strong he beat Hanzo".

It didn't seem like clear denial to me.

I don’t think asking what Pein’s abilities are is proof Jiraiya believes he killed Hanzo.

He is shocked at the concept of Hanzo losing and that it was some nameless rando it seems.

I would take "impossible" As a sign of disbelief though.

And some would say the extent of Itachi's hype came from Obito. Wondering how that compares here

It's an implication when coupled when asking how Hanzo was killed. I think.

imo it seemed he was astonished by the fact more so than rejecting it.

One of the few times i'll probably be agreeing with Hussain.

    Anyway Itachi takes the cake.
I for one do not buy any of Hanzo's hype.
The hype he got from jiraiya is actually a hype directed at nagato.
    Jiraiya's next opponent.

The hype he got by nagato. Again nagato seems to acknowledge his opponents strength fresh after defeating them.
It seems to be a character trait more than anything else.

His greatest feat was defeating 3 low kage character who were no where near their prime.
Impressive, but nothing to shout about.

His prime self is sannin level and i'd actually put all 3 sannins above him.

lol is this the same Hanzo who decided to tuck tail and flee when nagato got serious.
    Even with back up.

Extent of Itachi's hype comes from Kabuto though..He said Itachi was his best Edo Summon (besides his trump card obviously) and that he was in a different league (or something along those lines)
