Yes he got Ace's fruit. Yes you can argue that he looks a bit like Ace and Coby. but let's put all that aside for a minute and let's talk about his actual character rather than your preference on what he could've been.

His attacks' names are "claw" and "dragon" related. He sees himself as Dragon's assault rifle. the guy that will act as his guy in wars. his hammer. But what he really doesn't know is.. in reality, it's the other way around.

Dragon is going to work as the wind that spreads Sabo's flames around the entire world. The flames of freedom. Sabo is a great character I don't know where all the hate is coming from. He got Ace's fruit, big deal lol.

Just made a semi related post in another thread, I think Luffy has an excess of mentors, relatives, fanboys and followers. He's also a bit derivative.
That's why I can't see the point in Sabo. Another strong guy who loves Luffy. Another "family" member. I'd rather the Revolutionaries were a more independent faction instead of having the protagonists father and brother as leader and number 2.
Luffy also has a legendary Marine grandfather and one of the Yonko is his mentor.
Sabo came at a time where I didn't want him, don't hate the guy but no fan either.

I'm just waiting for Luffy uncle CP0 leader.

Hate is a strong word. He's just not as interesting as he could be. I think as soon as he ate Ace's fruit he lost his edge as being an individual.

Hate is a strong word. Sabo being seen as... something that is not quite fitting in is a mix of many factors.

First off, the strange timing of his reappearance. Dresrossa was already convoluted, and when BM ship appeared we were all screaming hype, but that's also when we started wondering if Oda can pull off all that he has brought into the arc. Right after that Sabo appeared, and we started getting more and more doubtful of the arcs execution - and, well, we were right. After that clusterfuck of an arc, Sabo was just another spoke on the wheel that felt out of place. Like Fujitora etc.

Sabo didn't have a lot of opportunity in that arc to show us why he isn't a 'meh' character that he so far seems to be. He isn't bad, he just lacks his own flare. He is another big bro of Luffy's and that's pretty much it. We want to see something different after all those years.

Thematically flame's don't represent freedom. Rather they embody destruction. Though temperament that which has been scorched/burnt be born a new. In terms of Revolutionaries abilities. Wind represent Freedom as it cannot be tamed. Its power gentle as the breeze comforting during harsh times or a rabid storm that sweeps those who oppose it. Sabo's the sword & Dragon's the hand which guides his ferocity. Between ASL, it was Sabo who was shown expressing his desire for absolute freedom. When Dragon found him in the street, he expressed his disgust for the polluted environment in which nobility ruled. Sabo's acquisition of Fire was two pronged decision. For in OP DF powers = character. This enabled him inherit his brother and his will. The second was it gave him the necessary fire power (awww yis) to be a force.

This might be bias since he's my number one. However Sabo is judged harshly. One by the Ace fans who cannot come to gripes with his death. Two by Oda's (re)-introduction of Sabo. The whole oh I saw him with a hole in his chest then remembered him doesn't fly. When Ace was reputed for fighting Jinbe, Warlord nomination, challenging WB and subsequent-ly becoming his Commander. To that degree I agree. However in every other metric, Design, Abilities, Role. He is a solid character.

Sounds cool. But in the end it will be pointless as Akainu gonna fist him like he did with Ace.

Shanks was never Luffy's mentor just his idol. Raleigh is probably closest thing he had to a mentor, and maybe his Grandad.

I don't like Sabo because he's just too perfect. Ace was cool because he was polite and smart, but also reckless and thought way too highly of himself. Ace is basically Luffy without the plot shield, Sabo is just annoyingly perfect and he sort of came out of nowhere in the story. He takes away from the mystery of the revolutions as the poster above said now we have Luffy's Dad and Brother as the top guys in the revos. But why is Sabo always stealing the spotlight when Dragon is the one we're all more interested in.

Sabo is just kinda boring like y'all are saying.

Mind you Ace was not very exciting, his whole character basically revolved around fanboying for Whitebeard and whinning about wanting to live in Marineford.

Christ he was much more of a character as a little kid in the flashback, as opposed to literally his entire in-series presence when he was still alive.

Sabo is a fantastic character. He represents a disposition rarely seen in this story; a person born of nobility that, unlike Doflamingo, became an outlaw for all the right reasons. But rather than being a cliche advocate of peace and tolerance like all of the lame monarchs constantly forced down our throats, he’s all about action and using force to achieve his ends. Many may think he’s boring, but that opinion is purely based on hate that he was capable of fighting on par with an Admiral and beating the shit out Burgess upon his reintroduction.

It’s awesome that he was seemingly an ordinary guy who’s become extraordinary due to his relationships; best bro and childhood rival of Ace, older brother to Luffy, love interest/squad leader of former slave/fishman captive Koala, apprentice of the world’s most wanted man, manager of personnel for a world wide organization that plans to overthrow an 800 year old regime and stepbrother of the King of Goa Kingdom. There’s a lot left unexplored about his life. He could essentially carry his own manga and I’d read the shit out of it.

I like that he’s smart enough to match wits with guys like Fujitora (which further justifies his position as Dragon’s right hand and second in command of the army) but still impulsive enough to do whatever he wants, proving that he still comes from the same stock as Ace and Luffy. It’s cool that he was able to form a good relationship with Robin and the other Strawhats and bring some much needed relevance to a faction not related to piracy, government or the Marines. His existence is a key aspect of effective world building for this story.

His fighting style is also awesome. He fights like I wanted Luffy to fight before the introduction of gears; explosive and efficient with a complete skill set. It hypes Dragon as an elite warrior and guarantees Sabo a seat at the table of the world’s best by the end of the story. People may see him as a Mary Sue now that he has the fire fruit as well, but unlike a lot of characters with cool devil fruits, he actually had to earn it on panel. His strength is totally justified considering what he went through as a kid, his motivations and the person that taught him how to fight. And it’s great that he also seems to have the ingenuity to maximize the potential of his devil fruit. Love how he uses it to fly. Can’t wait to see how else he applies it in the future.

Despite what people say around here, there are very few characters on Luffy’s side capable of defeating the World Government’s strongest, so Sabo needs to have a place in the end game. Even if Dragon fights Kong (whom I believe to be an absolute monster) and Luffy fights Akainu, that still leaves 3 Marine Admirals to account for. That’s way too much heat for the Strawhat Grand Fleet alone. Garp and Rayleigh are retired, the Red Hair Pirates likely won’t be around and no one else in the Worst Gen has any reason to throw in with the Strawhats and Revolutionaries outside of Law, who has a lot to prove before he can contend with the big boys. Sabo is in the perfect position to shoulder some of that burden.

Sabo also validates the supremacy of the Revolutionaries the same way that Ace did for the Whitebeard Pirates long before they were introduced. At the end of the day he’s part of an army, not some reverse CP faction that operates as a network of spies/assassins. They require military might, not only to fight against the powers that be, but to succeed where the Whitebeard Pirates and Impel Down escapees failed. I like that Sabo brings legitimacy to his organization so that the Head Honcho’s fighting abilities can still remain a mystery so many years after his introduction in the manga. He’s given the Revolutionaries some much needed prestige and development. Nice touch by Oda.

tl;dr: Sabo is awesome and has a lot to offer in terms of future events. It’ll be fun to discover the full extent of his abilities.

Sabo is easily one of the greatest characters in the entire series, his portrayal is going to be absolutely insane towards the end of the series. Consider me a fan, just calling it how I see it.

His fight vs. Fuji is still one of the best sequences imo and if they rematch it'll be even better.

This board(and really only this board) has this unjustified hatred towards Sabo.
Some transfer their hatred of Ace to Sabo. Some who doesn't like Luffy(and his many allies) also transfer their hatred on Sabo.
Objectively speaking Sabo had done nothing to deserve that hate. It is just people has already made their mind that they are going to hate him no matter what.
One of the complaint we usually see is that he is boring.
    I mean seriously?
A noble who turned rebel is boring for you?
More understandable complaint is how he was introduced. That I agree with. Dressrosa was genuinely too convulated and Sabo was introduced in that cluster fuck. That is really Oda's fault though for not writing the mess known as Dressrosa properly.
Him eating Mera Mera is understandable complaint too but it is far from deal breaker. Oda is Japanese man. Japanese likes whole inheriting will thing. You have to get over it or stop whining about it.
Sabo since his reintroduction hasn't done much other than fight. He didn't exactly had abundance of panel time after all. Give Oda some chance to flesh out his character at least before automatically assuming that you know everything there is to know about him. We are an impatient bunch really.

People hate that Sabo inherited Ace’s fruit but willingly justified Thousand Sunny, Sanji and Rebecca consuming it. Outside Coby [via Fujitora’s acqusition] and perhaps Wicca [mistaked theft and consumption] none of the choices made sense.

Nobody hates him. We even have posts in here straight up explaining that we don't hate him.

If you want real haters then make a Jinbei for nakama thread. People who haven't been on the forums for years would come out of retirement solely to post that he needs to be made into a fish pie or whatever other corny joke they could think of.

At least when Sabo pops back up people can't wait to see him fight. When Jinbei pops up it's all "is he gonna die yet?>uglyhestonlaugh<"

You have to admit a big part of this is Oda's fault.

He keeps blue balling Jinbe non stop, when Fishman Island came along and it being having a set that up Jinbe will join with Luffy, Oda decided to forestall.

Basically we went through a shitty arc without a payoff, for further delay.
Then three arcs later( 7 years our time) , we assumed yes finally Jinbe will join up with crew in WCI, we even had all this built up and showcase for him to be with the strawhats and his role.

But nope, Oda delays yet again. Its getting tiresome at this point. :catprone

Sabo in flashback arc: Cocky, powerful (for his age), cares for his friends
Sabo after timeskip: Cocky, powerful (for his age), cares for his friends

Not sure what changed. I think people are dissatisfied because they were emotionally invested in Ace during War arc. Seeing Sabo taking Ace's place is a weird feeling because Sabo was supposed to be dead, and Ace is dead. If you take his character in vacuum, however, he seems to take being part of RA with pride and continues to present his character traits. Oda still hasn't developed Sabo, however, and by the EOS he should be his own man without all the Luffy/Ace ties.

Sabo is a cool, but forced character. I tolerate him because Oda can do no wrong in my eyes :blessed

IMO he should've remained a flashback-only character where he would've had a bigger impact on the story as a source of childhood inspiration for Luffy and Ace through the example of his death. One of the biggest umbrella themes in OP is inherited will, shared dreams among non-blood relations, trans-generational hope, historical vindication etc. and Sabo's persistence to adventure irrespective of his age, social status and prospect of death served as an early-life reality shock for Luffy and Ace, and galvanized their resolve to get on the seas (pirating being THE biggest symbol in OP for freedom, away from the relative purview and absolute tyranny of the WG, similar to historical pirate crews who were often multinational and multiracial escaping poverty, slavery, religious bullshit, draconic laws etc.)

So in this respect Sabo has a purpose

But since returning Sabo's character hasn't improved. Like, at all. He is no better and no worse. He struggles to distinguish his personality outside of being smug. Ace had this great jock charm. He was the stereotypical shounen older brother, and did it well. He was older, taller, more shredded, better hair, less clothes, better hat, more successful, but also more foolish than Luffy. Ace was like some state governor's football prodigy son who's a giant high school chad, fingered Nami in Alabasta, but got busted for speeding by the WGPD and had his life ruined at the courts because Akainu had beef with said governor. Ace was a stallion who sprinted before he could walk

    Luffy is Luffy

But Sabo has none of this. He is Oda's problem child
