While most of you have photoshop, this humble member of NF does not.I make due with what I have, and I think this is my best MS Paint yet.

Awesome man, but why not enough shading? Take my work for an example.
I used different Paletes making my own character.

I used a set of colors to make it stand out.

Haruka: Wooooow. Did you do that with MS Paint? It looks very photoshopish to me, but if it's not, wow O_O.
Flowery: (Me = a she) and thank-you! XD
Nt90: Thankie XD (MS Paint is really easy to work with... if you're crazy and have loads of free time on your hands to work with the pixelatedness of it all O.o; (big arrow pointing my way))

    Yup. All in paint.
If you know how to use Paint to the maximun, it owns Photoshop.
The reason why it looks very photoshopish because I didn't balloon shade, I used different colors opposite on the color wheel of each other to use more dynamic shades and make it stand out more. MS Paint is very easy to use.
I just made this quick one to show you how not balloon shading is important.

So by not balloon shading you mean gradually turning color (a) into color (b) (a being the initial color and b being the shaded color) by means of just filling in the areas with each gradient color? Or am I just totally off base here?

I mean balloon shading by taking one color, changing the lightness and darkness of the color.
So, you basicly take the easy route, and an easy way of calling it is Pillow shading.
    Look at this.
