How would your branch of Christians react to the discovery of extra-terrestrial life?

coz Allah made 7 heavens and 7 earths tho shahih international said this
    Shahih
It is Allah who has created seven heavens and of the earth, the like of them. [His] command descends among them so you may know that Allah is over all things competent and that Allah has encompassed all things in knowledge.

the literal meaning was more like this
It is Allah who has created seven heavens and (so does/same goes to) the earth(s)
it imply earth is as many as the heaven

so if mars had life you guys should start to repent and go to mosque do convert (preferably not the turk one)

Looks like there are no Debbie Downers in this thread, so I'm gonna assume that role.

Organic matter refers to carbon-based compounds. Virtually any time you have carbon you're going to have carbon-based compounds. It's a basic fact of chemistry. The reason this is even worthy of note is because Mars satisfies a multitude of other conditions that would make carbon-based life possible (as far as we know). Liquid water arguably being the most important among them.

This story is basically saying they found carbon in the soil and the atmosphere of Mars. That's it. It's not nearly as impressive as finding liquid water, or evidence of it having existed prior. Stories like these tend to get sensationlised by media outlets that don't quite understand what the discoveries mean in the first place, which in turn helps legitimise NASA's project, and the search for life outside Earth writ large. Not that I'm complaing; media will sensationalise anything, and there are worse things to get excited about, and worse projects to fund.

There is also the Surah al-Jinn chapter of the Qur'an which talks about a group of genies (spirit creatures from pre-Islamic Arabic mythology, not all of whom live in magic lamps) converting to Islam upon hearing one of Muhammad's sermons, which shows that Islam is not only for humans.

If the holy book itself talks about humans of all races, genies and (presumably) angels being Muslims, then we can infer that Islam is open to all sentient races.

But still leads to some craaazy hubris if you're now going to make Muhammad the prophet for the entire UNIVERSE and have alien Muslims worship in the direction of, and go on pilgrimage to, the Kaaba on Earth.

IIRC, in all three Abrahamic religions, angels celebrate and worship God but do so out of compulsion rather than faith. I don't think they count as Muslims.

IIRC when the Arabs came into contact with Greek philosophy they started having these cosmic ideas about how the blueprints for both the Qur'an and Muhammad himself existed in the World of Ideas (Heaven, or in God's mind) before the first atom of the physical universe was even created.

In the tradition of how Christians read John 1 in connection with Genesis 1 and conclude that the logos of Jesus existed before the universe and that Adam was made in the image of Jesus. Resolving the otherwise strange claim that man was "made in God's image" even though God is supposedly transcendent and formless.

Not sure I have a full grasp of the theological implications but in my mind there would be two schools of thought, one saying alien existence disproves Christianity and another that would view alien life as another aspect of God's creation that we simply didn't know about. There's a third group that already believes in aliens that I don't find credible but they believe most of those who say they've seen aliens but think that instead of aliens people met some form of angelic or spiritual creatures.

IMO it doesn't necessarily disprove Christianity, but it would create a crisis regarding whether or not mankind is really "made in God's image" as claimed in Genesis. Similar to the crisis in early Christianity about whether or not the Jews were still God's chosen people even after Israel was conquered by Rome and the Apostles (esp. Paul) started inviting non-Jews to Christianity.

It'd be manageable as long as all alien life discovered was technologically inferior to humanity. You could still claim that mankind is the custodian of creation, as claimed in Genesis 1:26:

You'd just widen the scope of "the earth" to mean "the physical universe".

But if we encounter some alien civilization that is as superior to mankind as man is to, say, chimpanzees, it'd be harder to defend mankind's supposedly unique position.

This has all obviously been building ever since Copernicus discovered that the Earth was not the center of the solar system, and others thereafter found that neither was our solar system the center of the Milky Way or the Milky Way the center of the observable universe. Mankind's uniqueness seems to diminish with each new cosmological discovery, much as the Jews' uniqueness was challenged with every Egypt, Babylon and Rome they encountered.

I think probably the church (like the Jews) would resort to what here in China you'd call the Argument: that man is morally/spiritually superior to any alien life just as how the Hebrews were morally/spiritually superior to the Egyptians even when they were held as slaves.

It's funny how they make people think they're trying to find life outside of Earth so that one day human beings can live on in a different planet. What a touching story.

    @Catalyst75

How much of Mars' surface have we actually explored? It occurs to me that Mars is a planet just like Earth, so looking for life in a random spot might be like looking for a kangaroo in Russia.
