5th episode is hardly far. Gintama improves the humor as the eps go so just keep at it. Its worth the payoff with all the insane samurai shit that happens in it. Although it has way more to offer than just samurai battles.

Granted Gintama isn't for everyone. If you still can't get into it after 50 eps I'd recommend shigurui death frenzy.

    Basilisk was shit.

Gintama's first season was shit all around, its one of those shows thats better if you watch the introduction to get used to the characters, and then jump to like episode 64.

There are quite a few good eps in the first season that aren't worth skipping like the train samurai, armstrong cannon and go ninja eps. There are a few more but overall its gintama at its weakest during the first 50 eps. But I wouldn't say skip all the way to ep 64.
You'd be missing two good arcs if he did that.

Here is my list of the Absolute Essential Eps from Gintama's 1st Run
I made this way to quickly prepare newcomers for the second season:
But I think it should still hold up today

    3-17
    20
    22-24
    27-28
    35(2nd part)
    39
    40-43
    44-45
    47
    49
    51-52
    53-55
    58-63
    69-71
    76-81

    83-85
    86-87
    91
    101-105
    139-146
    177-181

    Heavy arcs, in bold.

And a the highly recommended batch of eps:

    29 33 38 96 110 112-114 119 121-123 129-130 151-152 156 182-184 188 190-192 195-201 ("recap" eps: 25 50 100 125 150 175)

    --

That first batch of 3-17 is mostly character introductions
    And establishing character relationship dynamics
But it is totally worth the time investing in it for what comes later

Really? I saw the first ep recently
But I had to stop since I got back into Prison School
But that first ep was pretty good, and looked amazing
And so I thought it'd be worthy of a rec
Does it really get that bad?

    Almost forgot
    Serei no Moribito

It's a bit of Ruroni Kenshin
And it's a bit of Lone Wolf and Cub
And it's a whole lot of gorgeous art and animation
It's not quite a samurai show
But the atmosphere, aesthetic and tone would make any samurai show blush with envy

I tried twice to get into this show. I hate the slow starter shit. I will try again tonight I guess.

I hate skipping anything. Takes the impact of a show out but my favorite anime of all time One Piece, well I started that late and made it through fine. I could try another show the same way I guess

It's a manga with a highly unusual art style, but Takemitsu Zamurai is amazing.

Blade of the immortal wins the category for me.

I came across it during my early anime days. It is actually the first anime I discovered on my own and therefore has a special place in my heart.

Sadly, it ended before the main character achieved their goal and when I asked my more experienced friends, they informed me that sometimes anime do not finish the story for various business related reasons.

Therefore, when I got into manga, I quickly found it and found out that the manga goes much further than the anime (205 chapters). I started reading it and found it to be even better. The fights are even comparable to anime fights for how good they are.

I strongly advise you to check it out. First try the anime as a taster and if you like it you can g for the manga.

Oh yes, its about a guy who is practically Tsunade for healing getting in some fights while protecting a little girl. Set in Edo era

You'd be doing yourself a disservice by watching BOTI over reading it. The anime doesn't even come close to the manga tbh tbf

Blade of the Immortal is more of a rounin manga than a strict ''samurai series.'' You should learn the difference. You won't find people wearing kabutos or different samurai clans fighting each other for their daimyo. It's set 150~ years after the Tokugawa Shogunate is established, and is more akin to Forty-Seven Rounin than Seven Samurai. Same story for Kenshin, which is set 250+ years later around the Meiji Restoration, I believe

Best bet is Vagabond. Musashi and Kojiro don't become official samurai, IIRC, until they're employed by their respective lords later on, but because it's set shortly after the Battle of Sekigahara, the general fallout from the Sengoku Era is enough to retain a true ''samurai feel.'' There's mountains of sword philosophy and a pretty solid exploration into the bushido code, even though Musashi is a dirty peasant fuck for the majority of the series. Amazing fights, but don't expect anything anime-level. It's all pretty much grounded in reality

Watch the Sword of the stranger movie. It has some extremely well choreographed and animated fight scenes.

Has there even been any new samurai anime in the last several years that are any good? Its sad how few of them exist now when you think about it. Same for mecha and space opera.

There are no good samurai anime. Read Blade of the Immortal and Vagabond (be warned though, the latter will never be finished).
