Naruto is set pretty much in present day, just not in "our world" per say. We've already seen headsets to communicate with so why not phonelines?

I think they were more like power lines than phone lines... If they were phone lines, why would they use birds to take messages... But on the other hand somebody could listen to your phone...
And this has happened before if you remember Itachi sitting on one of those poles after killing his clan...ummm...ch225 page 11...

It's not "no wai", they have modern things they just don't have cars, a lot of neon signs, and guns. :nod

Didn't notice that before in the manga though. O.o

Yeah, the ninja battles would be kind of redundant if they had cars. Hit and Run no Jutsu just doesn't sound all that exciting to me.

Those are power lines. Phone lines run underneath, and there are none in that pic. I don't think they have phones in Naruto. I wonder if Kishimoto purposefully makes sure there are no phone lines under his power lines?

One of the early manga chaptercovers shows Haku, Zabuza, and powerlines. This is nothing new.

As some have stated above, powerlines have been in Naruto for a very long time.

I actually never paid attention to them, but it's not weird since Naruto's supposed to be modern w/o gunpowder or other combustibles (gas --which means no cars OR planes). I could see phones though, and would think the birds could be explained by the fact that the villiges are in the boonies so the phones would only be for communication w/in the populated area of the villiage.
