Main draw of Clooney's trilogy was seeing Clooney and Pitt charm the fuck out of the camera.
Can Bulock and Blanchett fill in their shoes in the charm department?
That trailer aint giving me too much confidence in that

Still I do hope that it may find its own strength to hang its hat on.
    Maybe.

I actually thought the trailer looked pretty good, but I'm pretty skeptical over the project as a whole. Hopefully it's good.

They have assembled a nice cast here but I have my doubts about it. Don't know if they can recapture the charm of the original.

I can't even finish the 2.5-minute trailer, let alone the movie.

I forgot Awkwafina existed. I might watch it, but only because I'm mildly curious about seeing her and Rihanna and what they could possibly be doing in a movie like this. :hm

If you want to make a movie with an all female lead cast, then make something new. Stop trying to reinvent old titles and force feed this "girl power" agenda down everyone's throat.

Personally did not enjoy the previous Ocean films as I found them quite boring. But in this new era of Hollywood this movie and others like Annihilation have a lot riding on them. And I for one am excited to see, if they crush it or flop. Because whatever I'm sure it will have repercussions. Or maybe it will be a mediocre film that will be called great, much like Wonder Woman, but I guess we will find out in time

    Just saw the film

    Spoiler:
So Danny is probably dead, kind of a bummer.

I enjoyed the twist(s) at the end. I was wondering what it would be this time.

As is tradition, we get a a "dodge the laser" scene.

    Here is my review.

The suitably impressive cast deserve a lot of credit for salvaging what is in essence, a subpar movie on a good day. Everyone played their roles to perfection and the screen-time was adequately balanced between them, giving every single character a handful of standout scenes. Cate Blanchett was probably my favorite, but even Rihanna did surprisingly good. In fact, this probably is the first movie where Rihanna didn't make something bad worse, so yay! But make no mistake, they only keep the movie barely afloat, to where it would probably be a decent rental and nothing more.

It's really hard to get emotionally invested in this story when the titular 8 are trying to rip-off a company that isn't presented as villainous at all, whereas "Ocean's 11" made us hate the Andy Garcia character. Even when they reveal that Sandra Bullock is trying to get even with the ex who framed her, I found him only to be marginally worse than the people whom we are supposed to be rooting for. She was already a criminal and all he did was sell her out to save his own skin, which sure doesn't make him a nice guy, but it wasn't like she was a nice girl. All I could think about was how many people would lose their jobs and livelihoods in the fallout of this heist, just so she can get rich and revenge, whereas it seemed like Danny from "Ocean's 11" made some efforts to reduce collateral damage.

Finally, where were the stakes? Every obstacle they encounter is during the planning process, so worse case scenario, they just have to abort the plan...and even then, every challenge is solved within the next scene. During the actual heist, I was taken aback by how easy everything seemed. "Ocean's 11" gave its cast a formidable foe and their plans always seemed to be going wrong in some way, whereas "Ocean's 8" has a suspense free heist where seemingly nothing goes wrong. The final 20 minute introduce the best character of the movie and even throw in a twist that I should have seen coming, but did not...Yet it all seemed so pointless. Imagine them setting up a conflict that could potentially ruin everything, only for our heroes to spend the majority of it out of danger and then it turns out there wasn't any conflict to begin with and the film was just wasting our time...and then they have the audacity to suddenly throw in obstacles in our heroes way DURING. THE. FLASHBACKS, so...do I even need to explain why there's no tension at this point? It's just a very weak narrative and I would say this is even weaker than the previous sequels, as while they also felt unnecessary, they seemed to have an idea how 'tension' is supposed to work.

    4.5/10

something about the timeline doesn't really add up

    Spoiler:
debbie was serving time for 5 years, devising her plot all the while which was done when she got out. danny "died" that same year in 2018, while she was in prison, yet from between the lines she somehow managed to leak her likely still in progress plan to danny? (yes, in my opinion reuben was absolutely referring to danny on "he")

not impossible, but going by occam's razor it would be danny faking his own death. it's perfectly plausible with danny's character and his absence could be his attempt to lay low living another identity, which would be in jeopardy if he's seen together with his sister considering their familial history so it's perfectly logical for reuben to be sent instead. he was already living as a mexican in 12 though he was fucked by the french thief

If memory serves, Clooney said he didn't want to do another one after Bernie Mac died, so they probably 'killed' him off to torpedo expectations of a cameo. Yet they also probably made it ambiguous in case he changes his mind for the sequel.

Liked it, the heist was very clever. Good twists as well.
