HEY HEY, YOU THERE. BEFORE READING THIS THREAD COME AND CHECK OUT THE BEGINNER GUIDE BY CLICKING RIGHT .

    ----

    Hello, and welcome to NF!

My name is martryn. I am the self-proclaimed, unofficial, future Academy Registration mod. And it is my duty to introduce you, the newbie, to NF and the joys of a successful posting career.

Before you get started posting your intro thread, please read through this post. It will help you get on your way to future forum conquests. Maybe someday you'll be in my shoes, making threads where they don't belong with impunity. But you're not there yet, son.

First, let's go over a few guidelines to posting and forum etiquette.

    1. Let's not rush in and make too many new threads from the get go. Making a thread here in the Academy Registration is fine, and if you're here to advertise your own website, we have a subforum for you that no one reads anyway that you're welcome to post away in, but hold off on your outlandish theories and completely retarded battledome drivel. Get a feel for what has come before. Try posting in these areas a few times first, and read what is already out there. Test the waters, as you will. Allow other members time to get to know you.

Trust me, in all likelihood, the thread you're wanting to make has been covered multiple times in the past. Our search function isn't the greatest thing in the world, but try it out a little bit. If you're in doubt whether or not your idea for a thread is original, I'll save you the time and tell you that it isn't.

And god help you if I catch you making a thread that says anything like, 100% Proven! or It's a fact: Character #1 is more powerful than Character #2. If it were, you wouldn't have to make a thread to tell people about it.

    2. Regardless of where you come from or how awesome you are there, you're a nobody here. No one has heard of you, and no one is impressed. This is the single largest anime forums on the internet (source required). Look at those stats. As I'm writing this we have almost 160,000 registered members who have made collectively almost 20,000,000 posts. Holy fuck.
    July 2015 Update:
We now have over 233,000 members who have made over 40 million posts.

That doesn't mean that members here won't listen to you or value your opinion, but a reputation is something that grows with time. Until your little green bar is full and you've got several hundred posts, you're so new that you're considered still in the package, in a bag, in the car, with a receipt, waiting to be returned.

What this means is to be respectful to others. Sure, there are a lot of idiots on the forums. And eventually it'll be just as much your job to make fun of them and neg rep them. But not at first. At first you should try to keep a non-confrontational profile. Don't start shit you can't back up. Don't risk pissing someone off who can send your rep into the red because that's hard for newbs to get out of. Don't make fun of others, don't post anything radical, and don't flame.

    3. If you're wanting a quick and easy way to make friends, join a FC. FC's, or Fanclubs, usually consist of a tight knit group of members who share a common interest. Joining, and posting, in a FC thread on a regular basis is a great way for those members to get to know you. And all of a sudden you find yourself with forum allies and friends. And the networking begins!

Trust me, it works. I met my wife on these forums, in a Member FC. We started talking, and next thing you know we're talking on MSN Messenger. A few months go by and I talk her into sending me pictures of her boobs. And then she's planning a trip to the US for vacation and I convince her to visit me. That was around 10 months ago now, and she's been in America off and on for 3 months since then with plans to move here in January. I've got tickets to spend around four months with her in England this fall while she wraps things up there. And we're not even the first couple who have met, fell in love, and wed because of these forums.

    4. Type properly, please. No one cares if you're 10, or if English isn't your first language. At least try. This isn't a chat room. If you want others to take you seriously here you're going to need to use proper grammar, punctuation, and capitalization.

    I know what you're thinking.

y i got do tat this iz de interwebs no1 cares

It's because you look like a fucking retard, faggot.

    5. Your user name is going to be used in casual conversation. It needs to flow off the tongue and stand out. User names like Itachiisforbuttsex or GenericNarutoFan12389 can't even be shortened into a nickname. It's better to have a name like Wallflower.

    Things to avoid:
    • Long user names referring to sexually assaulting anime characters
    • Numbers at the beginning or end
    • Lots of words that run together
    • Words that no one can pronounce in their heads
    • Names that give away your massive fan wanking for a single character

Oh, shit, is it too late? Did you already register with a lame user name?

Well, no sweat. You can change it here. And this link works now, as of 2015.

    6. On this same line of thought is your avatar and sig. Your avatar will be the forum representation of yourself. You can get repped for an awesome avatar. People will remember your avatar, a lot of times, much better than your user name, especially at first. It's not that hard to make one on your own, so try and avoid the forum pregenerated ones. I know they look nice, but everyone uses them.

Go through an image search, sift through fan art, raid your personal image dumps and folders on your computer, and look for something original and cool. Then, open up paint, box it in 125 x 125, maybe put a black ring around that, and WHAM-O, an avatar. If you have something in mind, it takes you less than five minutes.

Good places to look for avatars include manga scans of your favorite anime characters, fan art websites, or even something like DeviantArt. Promotional material for you favorite series/movies also are nice, clean, and crisp.

Your sig should typically go with your avatar, though it doesn't have to. If you're in doubt what makes a good sig, hold off on one for a while, spend some time on the forums, and see what others prefer. It's really not that hard, but it's better to go with none than go with stupid. Things to avoid:

    • "I'm such-and-such anime character" Internet quiz results
    • Links to traps, things that steal your soul or give you money based on the # of people who click it.
    • Rep begging, or anything to do with rep.
    • Really long or tall images that stretch the screen.
    • More than one YouTube video
    • Pictures of women (or men) in compromising sexual positions.
    • Inults to certain forum members or any one group of people, i.e. Christians, Sakura fans, etc
    • Your anime husband/wife, or your forum family. You're the only 12 year old here. No one else wants to see that crap.

    7. Don't be a fan wanker. It's awesome you have a favorite character. If you couldn't tell, mine is Genma. However, I don't make tons of threads about Genma, or outlandish theories that Genma is the Akatsuki Leader or Genma has a sharingan or crap like that. No one would care. And no one cares about your fan wanking either.

There is a place for fan wanking. It's called a FC. Join one and make friends (see above).

If you've got Itachi or Gaara or Rock Lee plastered all over your avatar or sig, then you really need to be careful when you enter a Battledome thread or Library thread revolving around your favorite character. People can smell your wankism and they don't take kindly to it in these parts. I'll shove my giant, red rep cock down your throat if you try to tell me Itachi can solo all five/six hokages at once by himself, or that you have 100% proof that Tenten/Sasuke is canon. Fuck your beliefs! They're not in line with mine!
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well, that's all I can think of at the moment. I'll add some more guidelines if more come to me.

If you need any help, or you have any questions, feel free to ask. This is the place to do it. We all know you're completely without a clue right now, so we can clear things up for you in here before you make a fool of yourself out in the forum proper. If you're uncomfortable with that, send me a private message and I'll help you away from prying eyes.

    Have a great time posting!

    FAQs

    1. How do I get that cool title, like Jounin, Hokage, and God of Shinobi located underneath my User Name?

That's just there for flavor. Ignore trying to "go up in rank". No one looks at that shit. The more active you are on the forums, the higher that will go.

    2. I posted, but my post count didn't go up. Why?

Probably because your post sucked. Post counts don't go up for spammy posts. Try posting something that has some meat in it.

    3. Not only is my post count not going up, it's going down! WTF?

Stop spamming, you tard. The mods are on to you.

    4. Who here is important enough to listen to?

Do they have a much earlier user date, more posts, and a higher rep score? Then they're probably important. Listen to them. If you want to be picky, listen to anyone with a bold name or a colored name. Or someone that has mod, smod, or admin plastered somewhere in their profile.

    5. *insert generic question about Naruto anime or manga*

If you can't figure that shit out on your own, or find someone who can answer it for you, I think you should just leave the forums.

    6. How do I hide text
    Spoiler: like this
    in a cool spoiler tag?

You know how you put images up in tags? Yeah, same thing, except you type spoiler and /spoiler instead. In the first box, if you want the box to say something, type
Spoiler: whatever it is you're wanting to say
    instead of just
    Spoiler:
. If you have trouble, use your brain and play around with, previewing your posts to make sure you're doing them right.

    7. How do I upload images to my posts?

Use a fucking website, like . Download the image to your desktop, upload it on Tinypic, copy the direct link for layouts, and then click the image button:

and paste your link. I honestly just did it. And I have photo proof. It doesn't take that long.

    8. What's a sig? Can I have one?

Sig = Signature. It's that stuff that shows up everytime at the bottom of whatever it is you just posted. It can be an image or something like that. See the above guidelines in my first post.

To add a sig, or change your existing sig, access your User CP (User Control Panel, not your child porn stash) located on the top left of your screen. Then, on the left side, under settings and options, click on Edit Signature. Please follow the Signature Guidelines.

    9. How do I put polls in a thread I create?

When you're finished typing out the first post of your thread, before you click any buttons, scroll down past all the smileys, past the options to Submit New Thread and Preview Post (always preview your post before you post), to the box that contains Additional Options. At the bottom of that box, click the option to add a poll and change the number to correspond with the number of choices you want your poll to have.

    10. What are those green boxes under my avatar? Are they important?

Yes, those are the most important thing on the forums. That's your reputation. It is a physical manifestation of your popularity on the forums. The more you have, the more popular you are, and the more people will fear you and respect you.

But you never, ever, ever, ask for it. You must tailor every post to stand out favorably in such a way that other members will want to give you some more rep.

Never, ever, do you rep someone just to return the favor. That is the root of all that is evil. If someone has repped you recently enough to appear on your current rep page (located on your User CP), under no circumstances should you rep them. Doing so leads to the Dark Side of the forums. It's the first step down the path to posting nudey pics of yourself online and getting arrested for downloading child pornography.

All the details are located here.

    11. What is a skin, and how do you change it?

The "skin" you use is basically the color scheme you'll see as you browse the forums. It's mostly an aesthetic choice. No one else will know what skin you're using, so go with what you're comfortable with. I'd recommend changing from the default, though. My personal favorite is the Sasuke skin because of the nice blue color and everything is easy to see.

To change your skin, simply enter your User CP. In the "Your Control Panel" on the left side of the screen, you'll see "Settings and Options" (where you changed or added your sig earlier). Click on "Edit Options". Now scroll down to the bottom of that page, and in the box labeled "Miscellaneous Options", in the smaller box labeled "Forum Skin" click the drop-down menu and select the skin you want to use. You can always go back and change it, so use one for a while and settle with the one you're most comfortable using. Pretty much common sense.
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'll add more if more crop up.

and this because of the truth in it.

But yeah this should be stickied. It should also be noted that Academy Registration Mods have a sweet deal. It's easy to manage and you'll almost always get a laugh while doing it. It's like the Preschool Blender for retards without drama.

Requesting this be given a sticky. Honestly, this thread couldn't possibly have been a better guideline for new members (hell, even old users) on the forum. The guide in quite comprehensive, and while it may come off as a little self-righteous, you shouldn't mind it: that is just how martryn is. Suffice to say, this guy has been around long enough, seen his fair share, and even if you don't like him...you can't help but admit he is undoubtedly one of the more intelligent and noteworthy members on the forum.

The guide itself should absolutely be pinned up for all newcomers (and then some) to see. Obviously you don't have the follow it word for word, but it would generally increase the likelihood of having an overall enjoyable experience on the forum. Haven't read it yet? Read it. tl;dr? Read it, you lazy bastard. Already read it? Read it again.

Honestly, why has martryn been modded yet? The joke is past fruition.

great post. all noobs should be required to read this before posting.

also you should add in a part saying if your username looks something like "UchihaLoverNaruSaku776" that it should be imediately changed to an non-naruto related username preferably between 3-6 letters in length and have no unecessary numbers or symbols at the end.

seriously though noobfaces, if someone took the name you wanted pick a different one and don't add any fucking numbers to it!:mad

    Iria sticky this shit!

i hope you do not mind me sharing my experience as a newcomer:
the first thread I made on this forum was in this section. the only replies I received were from a long-standing member of over 3 years with over 15k posts and a long green bar. Instead of welcoming me to the forum this person asked that I log off my naruto forum account and said goodbye. Is he making fun of me? Why ask me to log off?? It was like he had some inside joke he was not telling me about. i can imagine he and his friends laughing at me, but i dont know his joke. it made me sad and embarrased and kind of angry. since he was a 'respected' member i took what he had to say to heart even more than most people. my brother would have probably got angry, but i react to stuff like that in a different way (i guess i avoid posting anywhere but fanart section, where people are nice)

sooo i guess the point of what im saying is that your "beginners guide" is all very well but maybe even long-time members should read it too because this place should be to welcome people and be nice not belittle them for being new to forum sites.

noobs are here for the oldfags to mock and ridicule.
you may wanna change your username to something with less numbers at the end and a little more original/non-naruto related (having those things in your username is a sure sign of noobism) preferably 3-6 letters in length but if you've got a good name you can pull off longer usernames. use the member list section to search for a name you want and if it's taken try something else DO NOT add numbers to the end of the username.

you don't have to follow my advice but believe me you'll thank me in the long run.

Hmmm... good point. And it might be useful if I also mentioned something about avatar and sig creation. If newbies want to be remembered for very long, it always helps to have something original as their avatar or sig, and not one of the pre-made ones the forum offers.

You're right. I hate it when I see crap like that in an academy thread. But sometimes it can be warranted. It all depends on what that first post looked like. Generally the more info in a first post, the better. In your very own Academy thread you actually do want to stand out a little, tell about yourself, and respond quickly to replies. The very worst thing forum members can do is pop in and post crap like, "Welcome to the forums." Might as well have members on auto reply if they're not going to tailor their response to your post, but if your thread looks like every other Academy thread, why bother posting one?
