Well, there are people who make that argument. Language commonality is basically why I support Taiwan reunification.

But language-based borders is not the official policy of the U.S.

And if it were, America and Canada should unify since they both speak English.

So then based on this policy, England, France and Spain can reconstitute their Empires right? We can probably carve out an Arab Empire from North Africa to the Middle East as well...

It is Russian. They voted to become part of Russia.

US needs to quit trying to meddle in it.

It is Russian because tanks rolled in and gunned down people who said otherwise.

Whether it ought to have been Russian before via a referendum is a moot point since Putin decided to violently annex before holding the vote.

They speak American in England, with a funny accent. :zaru

In other news, my household has recently voted to become part of Canada, as 100% of the eligible voting demographic supports this move I trust that the international community and our neighboring nation of the United States will respect and help enforce this decision.

Well that's a step. Should've used better arguments to support Crimea being part of Russia, such as being illegally given away in 1954 and Crimea having 2 referendums in 1991 and 1994 after the USSR broke apart.

TBH though Crimea is probably gonna be Russian for good.

There doesn't seem to be much local resistance to the annexation (for the reasons Trump mentioned), and the US/EU are sure not going to war with Russia for some place we've never heard of.

Especially when the EU would really like sanctions lifted so our businesses can get back into the Russian market.

Compare how the sanctions against China for the 1989 Tian'anmen Massacre were lifted as soon as 1993, even though there was no real improvement in the situation.

I never said they gunned down the people in Crimea itself, as I said a legit separatist movement might realistically have emerged from there in peace times, but obviously the people who thought that what was territory of Ukraine until tanks rolled in was territory post tanks rolling in.

Where was "law and order" during the coup d'etat in Kiev?

    Keep your fanfic to yourself.

[...] The takeover of Crimea has been completely different. This was an infiltration, not an invasion. And unlike in Hungary, Czechoslovakia and Afghanistan it was welcomed by a large proportion of the local population.
According to a well-known opponent of Mr Putin's, the vote in Crimea to join the Russian Federation was "a referendum under the Kalashnikov". But it wasn't. The outcome was what the vast majority of Russian-speakers in Crimea really wanted, and there was little need for Kalashnikovs in the streets.
Those who wanted to keep Crimea a part of Ukraine were far too shocked and intimidated to resist.
The entire operation was very cleverly planned and carried out. But there is absolutely no doubt what it was - a remarkable, quick and mostly bloodless coup d'etat.

    -BBC /news/world-europe-26644082

There would've never been a referendum under Ukrainian rule. So it was either 'take control and let the people vote to show the world it's all cool, or 'watch Ukraine join the EU and NATO, and have the Sevastopol naval base pulled from under your ass'.

But had there been a legal way to hold a referendum, the outcome would've been the same.

Already addressed that in the thread, I didn't claim that was not what the people in Crimea wanted. It was not what Ukraine wanted and settling secession problems via foreign invasion is a no no.

Then you should've worded it differently, since "It is Russian because tanks rolled in and gunned down people who said otherwise." sounds an awful lot like you believe that Russian tanks actually rolled in and gunned down people who opposed them. That's not what happened.

Some Ukrainians wanted a Russian Crimea, some didn't. The ones who didn't saw themselves in a civil war with Russian forces on the other side.

A unification of the British/US Empire would be a juggernaut. Add Canada and Australia with all of these countries using US military weaponry, tanks, jets, etc. and you'd almost certainly have an unstoppable empire.

As for Crimea, I think there should be some sort of way for the Ukraine to be paid for the monetary losses it will incur as a result of losing Crimea so that this matter can be laid to rest. Will Ukraine be completely satisfied? No. However, Crimea continuing to be part of Ukraine will only lead to more disharmony in the future. It's time to move on.
