    howdy...long time no post :blink

Basically, i live in a flat with 5 other guys and its a fucking good laugh and everything...but now i have a bit of a situation.

The way the flat is set out is that everyone has their own room and theres like, a living room and a kitchen (both of which are pretty big).

Now, in the living room weve got some pretty funky shit. Widescreen TV, 5.1 Surround Sound Speakers, MP3 playing stereo, PS2 and DVD player. All this stuff is mine that i brought to the flat.

At the start it didnt really bother me that it was ALL my stuff in ther living room, but now its starting to grate on me a little bit. I cant play my games or watch myDVDs because someone else ius always using them. This doubley pisses me off because they all have tvs and shite in their room, aside from me because mine is in the living room.

to be fair, noone asked me to put my stuff in their though, i volunteered too.

Thing is, now i want to take it back, but i cant really without looking like a total knob.

so what do you reckon? anyone got any advice or been in a similar situation?

Wow, that sucks. Hindsight is always 20/20 - guess you should'nt have allowed free use of your stuff to begin with, huh? In this situation, there's really no way to take your shit back without looking like a complete tool, so you have to deal with not being able to use your things as you please or risk pissing your roommates off. I say take the latter option because as the stuff belongs to you, you have the exclusive right to use it whenever you want. Besides, they have their own TVs and what not, it's not as if you're depriving anyone.

Now, let's say that everyone get mad at you for being a jerkface. In this situation, flip them the bird and move the fuck out.

Seriously, just explain that they really have shouldn't feel entitled to anything that wasn't theirs to begin with. Although, it might create lots of tension between you and them, which could be really awkward. Do it ninja-style, and gradually move your equipment piece by piece back into your room until you get it all back. (Though hard as it might be not to notice a big ass TV missing from the living room.) I know this advice isn't all that helpful, but maybe you can take it for what it is and figure out what you ultimately want to do.

Yup you will look like a total asshole. No one here can really tell you what to do. You have to know how your roomates will feel and how they will react . You have to figure out the best way to break it to them.

I suck at giving advice sorry. :(

WEll thats the thingthat has begun to annoy me, they are taking the stuff for granted, which is faiur enouigh because when you get used to stuff you do dont you?

its like today, i was trying to watch a dvd and one of the flatmates (the one that nobody likes) came in and just started smoking right next me, then started talking on his phone. i todl, him to get his 'fucking cigarette out of my face' and shut up (the flat is occupied by two smokers and 4 non smokers so theres a rule that if they wanna smoke, they do it out of a window), and he just kept on going, although he did put the cigarette out.

it sjust little things like that, i wanted to start playing final fantasy ten again,. but i really cant because i can never get on my own playstation, and one of my flatmates actually lent one of MY games and MY memory card out to one of his mates!

but yeah, i cant do anything about it without looking like a prick, so i dunno what im gonna do.

maybe after christmas take my stuff back and say its their turn to put their stuff out?

no just say that if they want to use your stuff in the lounge cos it better then someone has to give you their stuff for you room so you can have your own space.... just say your used to having a place you can just jam and its odd for you always having to go into the lounge to watch tv/dvs etc as its alway busy and sometimes you just wanna concentrate or enjoy a game/film in peace..
im sure they will rather let you take your stuff back then give you their stuff for your room

As I said, make it a gradual process- you can begin by taking your stereo. (Because you "want to listen to music in privacy" if there is such a need for explanation.) Wait a week, then take your DVD player back and so forth. At some point, they should realize that you really want to take your stuff back. Unless they want to confront you and look like total assholes for wanting to keep your stuff in the living room, you might not have to say anything at all.

In any case, don't be a doormat, and best of luck.

Well, the point wasn't that you want to watch TV, it's that it belongs to you, dammit! :nerve

Wait till everyone is asleep and then move your shit in your room. Then the next day act like nothing happened.

I would just take it back. Its yours in the first place, so you don't have to explain anything to them. This is probably not the best solution, but it is probably the most cavalier.

There's pretty much no way you can take them back without looking like a knob, as you said.

Sure, you can insist on it, or pull off some devious ploy, but what'll be the end result? The living room will be like, totally empty. The 6 of you guys would then be literally living in an apartment by themselves. Where's the fun in that, really? Obviously you guys didn't want to like just keep to yourselves, thus that's why there's a TV and all the other entertainment equipment in the living room in the first place.

It's kinda inevitable that when you have 6 people sharing a set of equipment, it just won't be free when you wish to use it half of the time.

A compromise could be that for example, if you want to play something on the PS2 and someone's using the DVD player already, just unplug the PS2, and play it on the TV in that guy's room? Slightly troublesome, but if he's halfway reasonable, there's no reason why he would object to it.

Then again, if you really don't think socialising with the other 5 guys is worth it, the better option would of course be to move everything back in your own room and explain it to them frankly.
