I was thinking just now, about what are the qualities that make a series rewatchable...

    It's not average quality...
never rewatched Full Metal Alchemist, nor Wolf's Rain, even tho I consider them 2 of the best things I've seen, but I still rewatched Banner of the stars more than 5 times.

It's not absence of backbone plot.
Sure, I've rewatched a couple of Mushishi bits here and there, but very few, and I never rewatched Bebop. Also 2 great production. And I still rewatched Excel Saga a lot of times XD

    It's not soundtrack.
I didn't rewatch Tsubasa Chronicles, I didn't rewatch Wolf's rain... But I still rewatched Last Exile .... god knows how many times lol.

    It's not number of episodes.
Never rewatched Area 88 (small), never rewatched Twelve Kingdoms(Large lol)
But I did rewatch FLCL many times (small), Haibane Renmei(small) AND Fate/stay(largish.. ok normal)

And keep in mind all of those are great series, as far as I'm concerned. So what is it for you that makes a series rewatchable?

    Fanservice? Comedy? I think it depends if your still interested in the series or not. If you still get excited about FMA of course your going to rewatch it. Series like Naruto and Bleach that are ongoing are easy to rewatch (at least for me) because your reviewing the old material and looking for clues of new stuff. Also cool moments like Archer's Unlimited Blade Works are always worthy of being rewatched because there so awesome. I don't know that's all I came up with, atm.^_^;;

HMmm ;) Keep in mind that by rewatch, I mean the whole series, not a moment or a single ep. I mean, that doesn't count :nod

Hmmh..there's some series that I tend to rewatch over and over again, but it's not neccessarily equates to best titles.

For instance, I've rewatch the entire sailor moon series at least 4 times, *just finished up all 200 episodes yet again a week ago*. Does that mean I enjoy Sailor Moon over a more solid title Tenchi Muyo or Rurouni Kenshin? No, for some reason, i just find it more enjoyable to rewatch (even with it's repttitve storyline and monster of the day scenario's), but I can honestly tell you I enjoyed RK and Tenchi much more than Sailor Moon the first time around, but for some reason, never got the urge to rewatch them.

For instance, I loved Fate/Stay Night but haven't gotten around to rewatching it and if I did, I'd probably skip over the first episode or two. xD

But I'd rewatch something like Girls Bravo from the very beggining to the end. Same goes for Azumango Daioh, which I was kinda on the fence the first time watching it but grew to love it even more after watching the entire series over again.

I don't know if there can be really be any rhyme or reason, as to why we watch certain anime over again, while never rewatching other titles.

Oh, and I love Tsubasa Chronicles (I too love the sound track), but I seriously doubt I'd ever rewatch once I finish with the series (or season for that matter)

But I do tend to seperate my anime, in a rewatch/watch once category.

Anime that I tend to rewatch:

    • Burn on DVD
    • Place a copy on my external Hard drive

Anime that I will probably never watch again or might watch an episode or two:

    • Burn on DVD

Yeah, really the anime titles that I tend to rewatch or rewatch often really have nothing in common with each other, different genres, different atmosphere, settings, etc. I really liked Mai Hime and Last Exile, but I seriously doubt i'll rewatch either anytime soon, rewatched Naruto, Bleach, GS, Eureka Seven, multiple times already, probably gonna rewatch E7 again real soon. *Shrugs* heh, just one of the unexplainable things I guess.

I also seperate my anime, the ones I am likely to rewatch are next to the computer at all times, why the remainder are on a shelf across my room (on dvds of course).

Well, viewers have different criteria on what makes an anime series rewatchable.

Basically, I rewatch mecha anime because I'm a big fan of it. That alone is the reason why I've rewatched Gundam SEED, Gundam X, Full Metal Panic!, Vandread, Fafner in the Azure and Eureka Seven more than once already. :p

In other cases, the very cool fight scenes makes me want to rewatch the whole series such as Get Backers and Rurouni Kenshin.

There are some series that I've rewatched because they're "light". Examples of such series are Sugar: A Little Snow Fairy and Stellvia.

All of my rewatchable anime are in VCDs/DVDs, since it's more comfortable to watch them in front of the TV than in front of the computer. :amuse

Hmm no idea actually. I love FMA and Mushishi ,NANA and Eyeshield and FLCL but I wouldn't rewatch them again. Samurai Champloo and Tenjou Tenge I did though. I have a small HD and no burner so I'd have to redownload whole series to rewatch them so for me the selection of rewatchable stuff might even be smaller. Somehow it's a kinda of flow that sticks with you and urges you to rewatch. Champloo and Tenjo Tenge had such an unique feeling to me that they're often on replay in the back of my head.

I mean, I have half of Naruto and some Getbackers on dvd and I never watch them although it'd be really easy.

Awesome scenes. Either awesome moments/fights with awesome characters with awesome music, or romantic scenes with likeable characters with awesome music.

Epic endings win too (*cough* Haruhi Suzumiya and Ouran High School Host Club *cough)

There are some episodes of Naruto, One Piece, and Eureka seveN that I have re-watched AT LEAST 5-10 times.

    Fate/Stay Night's episode 14 is a winner, too.

    Plot

How to tell a good story gets it for me. I have no intreast in how funny or how much action can be crammed into a anime if theres no forwarding the story I lose intreast

Those other two factors are added bonuses for me

Animes I have re watched are Eureka 7 and One Piece (still ongoing)

Like you have said there are a lot of animes out there which I personally love but wont revist after first viewing but for every 20 of them 1 golden one comes a long

    Characters for me. I've rewatched:

...Naruto many times just to see Kakashi being his delightful asshole self throughout Team 7's first bell test, Gai horrify the crap out of Team 7 during his debut, Sasuke's final moment w/ Naruto at the Valley of the end etc. etc.

...FMP Fumoffu because Chidori beating up Sousuke never gets old and Sousuke is HILARIOUS in Bonta-kun mode.

...Black Lagoon because Revy is awesomely batshit insane.

...Gintama because Gintoki's gang is a bunch of superlol self-disrespecting clowns.

And so on and so forth. So yeah, when it occurred to me to think about what makes a series rewatchable, I realised that the ones I do/would rewatch aren't particularly reliant/ingenious on plot, aren't always critically-acclaimed and definitely not convoluted (I enjoy Ergo Proxy and think it's an excellent series, but I doubt I'd subject myself to another cycle of 26 eps of mindrape >_>).

So that leaves the characters. If a series has characters I find appealing (for males, dark-haired aloof archetypes have the highest success rate in suckering me in; for females, strong characters - extra points if capable of inflicting grievous bodily harm), I'm likely to rewatch it if most other aspects of the series aren't utterly hopeless; same principle for how likely I am to finish a series. Granted it's not the only factor, but it's usually the deciding one. Which is why I end up watching crap like Harukanaru Toki no Naka de, lololol.

The only series I rewatch are the ones that have enough depth or redeeming value to appeal to me, not nauseate or bore me, the second go-round.

I've rewatched Berserk and the RK OAV several times. I've rewatched Marmalade Boy and Kare Kano. I've rewatched Angelic Layer and X and Escaflowne. And there are other series, too, but I forget them all.

Really, all of the aforementioned qualities (comedy, romance, characters) are valid, but what enables me to sit through a second viewing of anything, whether it be anime, TV Show, movie, etc., is that unquantifiable x-factor I call "appeal." Various qualities result in appeal, so as long as the show clicks with me on some special level, I can watch it over and over. :amuse

I have rewatched all of my animes, except for 1 or 2. That's becos I'm very selective in what i watched in the first place xD There are some which i have rewatched more than 3 times, X, escaflowne, 12kingdoms (the most times), FMP, POT, Ouran, gundam seed

To summarize what enticed me to the series, good plot/story and awesome music. Great Seiyuus are a factor too.
    :)

I think I rewatch series that I feel have a nice plot and good character development. Music is always a plus, although most shows have solid OSTs.

Series I've rewatched include Escaflowne, Eureka 7, Berserk, Kiminozo, Bible Black, and Gankutsuou. I'm already sure I'm going to rewatch Twelve Kingdoms. Mushishi and Akagi I'll also rewatch, but they aren't really plot heavy. I liked shows such as Champloo, FMA, Ouran, Black Lagoon, and GitS SAC, etcetc, but I never felt any desire to watch them again.

I guess the series I eventually rewatch make my special place tingle just enough, so that I watch them again to feel that sensation once more. :oh
