There is no best per se, but which sub-genre of hip-hop is your favourite and why?

Gangsta (East Coast, specifically) and conscious are my personal favourites, though as you said, there is no one best subgenre. There are, however, worst subgenres, i.e. Hyphy and Crunk.

  3. Choosing one, it would probably be abstract. I enjoy listening to abstract, conscious, jazz, and at times some gangsta hip-hop but limited to certain artists & groups.
The most meaningful expression, that honest expression through the poetic lyrics is my favorite kind of hip-hop, and a lot of gangsta rap is a whole lot of faking..it's fine in small doses when the artist is honestly expressing themselves though.

Jazz and Acid get my vote, I've always found them to be very appealing. But on the whole, good hip-hop is good hip-hop.

Conscious. Angry at the government is shit I can get down with. Plus concious rappers tend to be the most clever, even when talking about partying and chasin women.

I love conscious/soul hip hop, I connect with this type of music the most. But I'm a fan of anything with multi-syllabic rhyme schemes.

The best choice isn't even on there and that's Underground. Based on the choices that are provided I'll choose Conscious. Gangsta rap doesn't really exist anymore unless your talking about a diss track.

I left that out because it's not really a sub-genre but more a part of Hip-Hip. Underground artists can be conscious, abstract etc.

When I see "best" I'll take that as "favorite" and my favorite type of Hip Hop is some laid back groove shit. I love Tribe and I love Slum Village in their Fantastic days and some Kero One and Fat Jon. Dilla beats like Think Twice or Blueprint's Chamber Music.

These days conscious is the one I groove to the most often. Being as it crosses through most of the other selections.

Aesop Rock, WarsawpacK, Immortal Technique, CunninLynguists, Bus Driver, K'naan, Blackalicious...A lot of it is angry, which goes well with my metal roots.
