Part 1 I'd say Sasuke leaving the village
Part 2 probably Tobi being Obito

Nothing has really been shock-worthy for me. Things like Sasuke eventually leaving the village, Kabuto being a bad guy, or Minato being Naruto's dad were all pretty obvious.

I guess Pein wiping out the village took me by surprise. Then again I knew Kishi didn't have the balls to leave all those people dead.

    For me.
    Part 1
Hard to say(and I haven't chosen now), so it will be Sasuke's heel turn for now.^_^
    Part 2
    Tobi is Obito.

Neji's death was the only thing that made me "WAT?" out loud because of how unexpected it was. I wasn't even a Neji fan :catshivers

I don't think anything shocked me in Part I since I started with Part II and caught up later, so I was quite spoiled by then.

Part 1 is not so shocking... Dude was bound to turn heal.
Second one however is like a fan favourite getting eliminated midway in the Royal Rumble by an asshole wannabe.

I don't recall being too surprised by anything in part one, but like most I backtracked to read it. Part two surprised me with Jiriaya's death and later with the fact that Black Zetsu was the mastermind behind much of part two's villainy.

I read a lot of spoilers before I started Shippuden so nothing really shocked me. Black zetsu was rather unexpected, though, as well as Orochimaru coming back and being a good guy. Same for Kabuto.

    1) Kiba's double headed wolf. So cool the first time he did it and opened up alot of possibilites for Kiba's abilities for me. Nothing story wise shocked me in part 1 though.

    2) Neji being killed off so pathetically.

The idea of orochimaru was shocking.
He was pretty much lord voldemort.
Hates his teacher, has a fascination for a young boy, his own version of horcruxes(curse seal).
It shocked me how similar they were but orochimaru was creepier.
Nothing surprised me in shippuden though, I knew spoilers. Kakashi dying was a mild one. I didn't know that.

A lot of the big deaths were telegraphed from a long way off.
    • The tone of Jiraiya's last conversation with Tsunade and Tsunade winning the lottery comfirmed it. It felt more tragically inevitable rather than shocking.
    • When Itachi and Sasuke faced off, it was very clear that one of them was going to die.
    • When the whole alliance showed up to help fight Obito, some minor charactes were going to get killed off. Even if not Neji specifically.

Similarly, Sasuke leaving Konoha was a huge moment, but it was heavily foreshadowed and one of the most important plots of Part 1. To the extent that Sasuke not leaving the village would almost be more surprising.

I'd say in terms of single shocking moments, there are a couple of standouts.
    • First was Itachi's true intention being revealed. There was definitely something going on given Itachi's smile before he died. But that made the fans feel confused rather than telling them almost exactly what was going to happen.
    • Then there's Kabuto's use of edo tensei against "Madara". He was always hinted to be quite a dangerous character further down the line. But having him show up with half of Akatsuki as his immortal servants was... quite a big step up for him
    • Then there's Kakashi death against Pein. Unlike Jiraiya's which was really necessary to hype the villain, raise that stakes and give Nagato a deeply personal enmity to NAruto, KAkashi's death wasn't really necessary. And he seemed to have a lot of story left to tell. Obviously this was undone a few chapters later after Pein was defeated. But for a while, that was a really huge change made to the series, to kill of one of NAruto's most reliable father figures.
    • Sakura trying to kill Sasuke in the Land of Iron was a big shock too. Obviously her love confession to Naruto before that was a lie to get him to protect Naruto from chasing Sasuke. But the follow-up gut-punch of Sakura deciding to either kill Sasuke or die trying, that was a shocker. I think it was that moment, along with the point where Sasuke stabbed Karin for the sake of revenge, that Sasuke seemed the most hopelessly irredeemable.
