North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and U.S. President Donald Trump reached the venue of their historic summit in Singapore on Tuesday, after both sides sought to narrow differences over how to end a nuclear standoff.

While Trump was optimistic about prospects for the first-ever meeting of sitting U.S. and North Korean leaders, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo injected a note of caution, saying it remained to be seen if Kim was sincere about his willingness to denuclearize.

Officials of the two sides held last-minute talks to lay the groundwork for the summit of the old foes, an event almost unthinkable just months ago, when they were exchanging insults and threats that raised fears of war.

The summit was due to begin at 9 a.m. (0100 GMT)

Trump was the first to arrive at the Capella Hotel on Sentosa, a resort island off Singapore's port with luxury hotels, a Universal Studios theme park and man-made beaches. island, a resort. Television images showed Kim's motorcade arriving later.

Staff-level meetings between the United States and North Korea were going "well and quickly," Trump said in a message on Twitter on Tuesday.

But he added: "In the end, that doesn't matter. We will all know soon whether or not a real deal, unlike those of the past, can happen!"

After a flurry of diplomatic overtures that eased tension, the leaders are headed for a history-making handshake that U.S. officials hope could eventually lead to the dismantling of a North Korean nuclear program that threatens the United States.

The combatants of the 1950-53 Korean War are technically still at war, as the conflict, in which millions of people died, was concluded only with a truce.

On Tuesday morning, Pompeo fed the mounting anticipation of diplomatic breakthrough: "We're ready for today."

Trump will hold a one-on-one meeting with Kim on the resort island of Sentosa, before they are joined by officials and have lunch together, the White House has said.

While Trump and Kim shake hands, searching each other’s eyes and words for signs of trust or deceit, the rest of the world will be watching, hoping that somehow these two unpredictable leaders can find a way to defuse one of the planet's most dangerous flashpoints.

"I just think it's going to work out very nicely," Trump said on Monday, although gaps remain over what denuclearisation would entail.

Pompeo told reporters the event should set the framework for "the hard work that will follow", insisting that North Korea had to move toward complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearisation.

North Korea, however, has shown little appetite for surrendering nuclear weapons it considers vital to the survival of Kim's dynastic rule.

Sanctions on North Korea would remain in place until that happened, Pompeo said. "If diplomacy does not move in the right direction ... those measures will increase."

He added: "North Korea has previously confirmed to us its willingness to denuclearize and we are eager to see if those words prove sincere."

The White House said later that discussions with North Korea had moved "more quickly than expected" and Trump would leave Singapore on Tuesday night after the summit, rather than Wednesday, as scheduled earlier.

Just a few months ago, Kim was an international pariah accused of ordering the killing of his uncle, a half-brother and scores of officials suspected of disloyalty.

    'CHANGED ERA'

The summit was part of a "changed era", North Korea's state-run KCNA news agency said in its first comments on the event.

Talks would focus on "the issue of building a permanent and durable peace-keeping mechanism on the Korean peninsula, the issue of realizing the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula and other issues of mutual concern", it added.

Ahead of the summit, North Korea rejected unilateral nuclear disarmament, and KCNA's reference to denuclearisation of the peninsula has historically meant it wants the United States to remove a "nuclear umbrella" protecting South Korea and Japan.

Trump spoke to both South Korean President Moon Jae-in and Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Monday to discuss developments ahead of the summit.

For Kim, the authoritarian leader of militarised state that has shunned contact with the outside world, the ultimate goal aside from security guarantees would be freedom and support to develop an impoverished economy.

For Trump, achieving a momentous foreign policy success would cement his place in history, and give his presidency a boost just months ahead of congressional mid-term elections.

Many experts on North Korea remain skeptical Kim will ever completely abandon nuclear weapons, believing his engagement aims to get the United States to ease crippling sanctions.

"The process could be doomed before it begins," said Kelsey Davenport of the Arms Control Association, adding that a common understanding of denuclearisation was key to success.

So talk here is that Kim is taller than everyone thought he was.

Because Trump is huge (1.88m or 6'2") and Kim isn't much shorter.

This will be interesting. I still do not gonna think anything will happen of significance. Yet, we will see. From todays view Kim is untouchable. The US cannot go in there without major casualties or much worse.

Giving up nukes for guarantees ... Well, what are these worth in the long term or till the next president when the guy is just around mid 30 and is considered "a god" ?

And lets take a look at Ukraine, since they did the same in 1994.

And today Trump is telling the other nations, that he wants Russia to go back to the G8, after they took parts of their land and the Crimea. Moreover, we seen how things developed in South Korea for the old elite.

    Stuff, like, older,

    more recent,

Not even China wants that deal. Therefore is probably more meant for entertaining.

    Kim looks 5'7. Not tall.

I'm laughing at the reporters who had to run gracefully to catch up when Trump and Kim went into that building. LOL their body language

If I understood it right they're going to have 45 minutes of completely private discussions, with only their two interpreters present in the room.

Then after that it's 1 hours 30 minutes of "open-door" discussions with their teams and I guess maybe some media present. Then it's lunch, and after that preparations for departure; Kim's flight home leaves at 2 PM local time, just five hours after the start of the summit.

    Linguist nitpick:

Kim's translator is a man, but Trump's is a (presumably Korean-American) woman. WTF.

I'm a believer in the principle that interpreters should be the same gender and approximate age as the person they are interpreting for, because it might subconsciously affect the listener's perception of the speaker if they hear them speaking in a "miscast" voice; in this case Kim might be hearing Trump speaking in a female voice, or vice versa (not sure which of the two interpreters does English-to-Korean and which one does Korean-to-English).

This especially applies when interpreting between languages that have formal marking of gender, such as Japanese (and Korean???) where men and women use different pronouns and I think verb forms. While on a conscious level the listener surely understand that what they're hearing is supposed to be the speaker's words, on an unconscious level it's sure to be distracting to hear dialogue employing male gender-markers coming out in a female voice.

I've heard somewhere that a majority of interpreters worldwide are women, but surely you could have found a male one for Trump when it's such an important event.

Generally interpreters are not experts in anything other than interpreting.

Or, I mean, obviously they should know all the technical terminology that might crop up in the discussion they're interpreting (e.g. nuke-related words in both languages), but they don't generally hold any executive position in the State Department.

E.g. if you have a chief of the East Asia Office who just happens to be a fluent Korean speaker, that person could theoretically act as interpreter, but generally you will have a specialist whose only qualification is being super good at both Korean and English. Them having another formal position in the SD might actually be a distraction, since they might be tempted to add their own opinions and advice into the discussion, when you are only supposed to impartially relate what the two people are saying.

So they're on to group discussion. Aside from Kim, Trump and their two interpreters I counted four other people in the room. One was (U.S. Secretary of State) Pompeo. Not sure who the others was; wasn't paying attention to whether or not Kim's #2 man Chae Ryong-Hae was in the room or not.

Also couldn't tell if everybody had their own interpreter or if the two ones mentioned earlier will be working for everybody.
