    What They Take You For

They take you for a fool
so they can take you for a ride.
They'll take you for all you've got
whether or not you pick a side
of the two-face coin they flip
when they take you for a chump.
They'll take you out for dinner
even though there's no free lunch.

    They'll take you for granted,
there is always some kind of catch
until you just can't stand it.
No gift comes without some strings attached.
They'll take you for a spin
if you believe all that you're told.
They'll take you for all you're worth
if they can shame you until you fold.

And just exactly who are "they"
    you may always wonder?
"They" are all who only gain
    by always dealing you under.

Another thing from my notes, which I've been trying to catch up with since the Holidays

    Forever War

Tell me, what did you really want to be
when you grew up? Just who did you see
yourself become if it were up to you?
If you didn't have to be soldier, what would you do?
What did your home need? What did it lack?
What did they miss out on, what did you pack
when you shipped out, no turning back?
Just years & years of turning corners
No glory, just trying not to be another
    punch-clock thug, just following orders
Waiting for the day that never comes
Even if you leave, the warbeat still drums

    Forever War
    Invade the 3rd World, troubleshooting
1st World Problems, instead of rebooting
    Forever more
Just pretending there'll be a happy ending
Until there's nothing left worth defending

Thank heaven for those who came back alive
Blame hell for those who didn't survive
But here on Earth we just ignore
the toll, for we still have Reserves
on both sides, a fate no one deserves
    Quoth the Chickenhawk: "Nevermore"
But without victory, there is only doubt
so with endless enemies, there's no way out
Just another round in the Forever War

All these years later, the warzone still grows
stacking a body count nobody knows
    fighting waves of manufactured foes
After all, that's just how it goes
when Enemy Combatants all look the same
as all the civilians, having no shame
Hide and Seek in plain sight, shifting blame
to refugees fleeing this frag-tag game
sent back into the rubble from whence they came
with no exit strategy, no endgame
Business As Usual, respawn shooting ranges
Technology might, but war never changes

Turning corners turned into a revolving door
That's all that this will be remembered for
Sustainable peace is never in store
when fighting a rich man's endless war
Generations shipping out to distant shores
mass-producing foes for the next generation's poor
to fight while profiteers keep Stock Market score
for next Fiscal Quarter in the Forever War

    Quoth the vultures: "Nevermore"
All it will be remembered for
No turning back, opening that door
Years from now, we might implore:
Where have all the young ones gone?

They're still fighting the Forever War

Someday, I'd like to actually post a retrospective on the War On Terror(ists), but much like Vietnam, I suspect this is the sort of "war" no one wins, but just gets tired of. There was never any defined "enemy" to defeat, so all we'll ever be doing is shadow-boxing the consequences of our foreign policy...

    Just Passing Thru

Another day, another stop to stay
Along the Twilight Zone's lost highway
Just a figment of your imagination
I walk alone among many, no destination
Once took some clich├ęd advice & got lost
Ever since, my life has been a long walk
Trying to find my way back to someplace I never knew
So don't mind me, I'm just passing thru

So many miles down, so many more ahead
just trying to catch up before I'm dead
What I've been doing since forever
for as long as I can remember
    Always chasing a rainbow
    I'll never catch up to

    Still walking a lonesome road
the weight of years a shoulder load
Home is a mirage, always on the horizon
but someday I'll lay my burden down
as we all must in the end
Unfound, just dust in the wind
    Just passing thru

Just grab my pack, go for a walk & never come back
All water under a bridge I left too far to keep track
See all the faceless people who come & go
but I'm just a ghost you'll never get to know
So many stories out there remain untold
Try to follow some, but now the trail's cold
Always trying to retrace the connections
to lost paths running in different directions
So don't mind me, I'm just passing thru

So many miles down, so many more ahead
just trying to catch up before I'm dead
What I've been doing since forever
for as long as I can remember
    Always chasing a rainbow
    I'll never catch up to

    Still walking a lonesome road
the weight of years a shoulder load
Home is a mirage, always on the horizon
but someday I'll lay my burden down
as we all must in the end
Unfound, just dust in the wind
    Just passing thru

In the best of all worlds, no one would have to say goodbye
letting others pass through our lives without knowing why
I've walked away from so many things since then
I just wish I could find my way back again
Yet I waited & waited, over time they faded
wondering now & then why I hesitated
Years go by & you leave behind
Things you wish you still could find
Now I've come unstuck in time
Unmoored in the stream of my mind
Take only memories, leave only words
after this soul flies south with the birds

So many miles down, so many more ahead
just trying to catch up before I'm dead
What I've been doing since forever
for as long as I can remember
    Always chasing a rainbow
    I'll never catch up to

    Still walking a lonesome road
the weight of years a shoulder load
Home is a mirage, always on the horizon
but someday I'll lay my burden down
as we all must in the end
Unfound, just dust in the wind
    Just passing thru

    Still walking a lonesome road
the weight of years a shoulder load
Home is a mirage, always on the horizon
I still long to go there
Each day the one I hope to arrive on
    but home is nowhere

Trying to find my way back to someplace I never knew
In the end, we're all just passing thru

Sometimes I wish that the friends I grew up with could also be the ones I grow old with. :(
