The Boruto anime is actually part of the infnite tsukuyomi. It's actually all part of Naruto's dream where he thinks he became hokage and that he redeemed his best friend. At the end of Boruto, Naruto will wake up on the battle field, all old and shriveled. He will look around the field and see the decomposed bodies of his former comrades, every single one of them dried up and dead. He will look up towards the moon once again and see the image of Madara taunting him. With his last bit of strength he tearfully reaches out to the moon with his hand shaking as he collapses afterwards. He gasps for what little air he can breath in and stares one last time at the battle field with the millions of decomposed bodies. As he is about to draw his final breath and close his tearful eyes he realizes that he has been beaten and that nothing ended well, for everyone is dead and since he and everyone else have been drained of their chakra by the tree, nobody even has a soul for an afterlife. With this depressing final thought he accepts his fate and dies.
