The 2026 World Cup will be held in the United States, Mexico and Canada after FIFA's congress voted overwhelmingly on Wednesday to back the tri-nation joint bid for the tournament and leave Morocco to miss out for the fifth time.

The North American bid collected 134 votes to the 65 for Morocco. One congress member voted for "neither bid."

The 2026 event will be the first expanded tournament featuring 48 teams, up from the current 32-team tournament, which begins in Russia on Thursday.

Both bids were given a last chance to make their case with 15 minute presentations in front of congress, at the Moscow Expocentre. The north Americans pledged their tournament would generate an $11 billion profit, while Morocco, which has now failed in five bids to host a World Cup, said theirs would make five billion.

Although it will be the first tournament to be hosted by three nations, the vast majority of games will be held in the United States.

Of the 80 games, 10 matches will be held in Canada, 10 in Mexico and 60 in the U.S. with the final played at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, home to the NFL's New York Giants and New York Jets.

"Thank you for entrusting us with the privilege of hosting the FIFA World Cup in 2026," Carlos Cordiero, president of the US Soccer Federation told Congress.

"Football today is the only winner."

The U.S hosted the World Cup previously in 1994 while Mexico hosted it in 1970 and 1986. Canada has never hosted a men's World Cup but held the women's tournament in 2015.

"We are very excited and humbled that the FIFA Member Associations have entrusted the CONCACAF region with the honor of hosting the 2026 World Cup in its new extended format," CONCACAF said in a statement.

"Each of the United Bid's 23 proposed stadiums are fully built, occupied, and operational, ensuring long-term use following the 2026 World Cup."

Decio de Maria, President of Mexico Football Federation and Co-Chair of the United Bid, said: "We are grateful for the chance to bring to life FIFA's new vision for the future of football.

"We will use this platform to unite the world around football and help create a new and sustainable blueprint for the future of FIFA World Cups."

    NEW SYSTEM

The last time FIFA voted on World Cup hosting rights was in 2010 with the decision resting with the old executive committee and they chose Russia to host the 2018 tournament and Qatar for 2022.

Several members of that committee were later banned from the sport after they were caught up in the corruption scandal that engulfed world football's governing body in 2015.

Under FIFA's new system for choosing the host, all eligible football federations who attend congress were given a vote.

The result has been a jet-setting campaign from both bids who have traveled the globe in an attempt to win over the worldwide electorate.

Cordeiro has said his bid would generate $14bn in revenue and make an $11bn profit for FIFA. The bid also expects record ticket and hospitality revenue.

The result is a boost for FIFA president Gianni Infantino, who while he maintained neutrality during the campaign, was known to be keen to see the first expanded tournament be held in North America.

The 2022 tournament will be hosted by Qatar while the 2018 edition kicks off in Moscow on Thursday when Russia play Saudi Arabia.

Current rules say the World Cup is not allowed to be hosted in the same continent as either of the preceding two cups.

The pattern in this millennium has therefore been this:

2002 Japan & South Korea (Asia)
    2006 Germany (Europe)
    2010 South Africa (Africa)
    2014 Brazil (South America)

    2018 Russia (Europe)
    2022 Qatar (Asia)
2026 United States & Mexico & Canada (North America)
    2030 South America?*

    2034 Asia?**

    * This year will be the WC's 100th anniversary. As the first cup was Uruguay 1930, a lot of people think it'd be cool to go back there again, especially since South America is eligible.

** President Xi Jinping of China is a huge football fan and was very disappointed when China lost to Qatar for Asia's slot in 2022. It's likely they'll muster all the bribes and lobbying they can to get the WC as soon as Asia becomes eligible again. And it kind of makes sense for FIFA too since it's the world's largest market.

Oh, this also means Canada will complete the Treble of major sports events, having previously hosted the Summer Olympics (1976) and Winter Olympics (1988, 2010).

One of the reasons some opposed this or saw it as a con (FIFA offficials) was that they cited human rights violation. So he can take credit for that too

Also I don’t think the United States deserves to host the World Cup. Every single ESPN article I’ve looked that focused on soccer had the same comments written underneath it by Americans: “soccer is boring”, “soccer isn’t a real sport”, “people watch soccer??”

WC should be for countries that actually value the sport. I’m excited to be able to have a chance to go to some of the games though, so there’s that. The Mercedes-Benz stadium in Atlanta will be perfect for this too

I’d just write it off as a vocal minority

Yea, in the states Basketball and football are bound to get more attention than soccer but I doubt that means a majority of Americans are apathetic or derisive towards it.

What I mean by bigger is the amount of money and coverage it gets. It's large enough to be considered an unofficial holiday in the US. Also, it's rapidly growing in popularity in the UK and Mexico, especially with the increasing amount of games the NFL holds there.

You're right that the only continent which has never hosted the WC is Oceania, but awkwardly enough Australia is in the Asian federation, leaving New Zealand as the only really viable Oceanian country.

So people have floated (pun intended) the idea of a cross-federation bid between Australia & New Zealand. As far as I know there's no rule prohibiting this, though it would likely have to be in a year when both Oceania and "Asia" are eligible to host. So either 2034 or 2046.

I still think that (imo) WC host has to have chances to go to knockout round.
Qatar, China, Indonesia, Canada isnt very good candidate to be hosts
Because what is the point of being host, if they will only be spectator in the next round.

US and Mexico wasnt that bad back in the day. Iirc i remember US passed the group stage ocasionally. I dont follow mexico sadly.

Hosting is more for the fans than for the players. Rotating between countries and continents give more people a chance to see the WC in real life without having to travel to the other side of the world.

And it helps spread the costs of hosting.

The concern should not be whether the host country's players do well or not, but whether the audience in the host country is interested enough to fill the stadiums. Asses-in-seats.

So while for instance the PRC notoriously sucks at football, interest is still HUGE and you should have no problem selling out every match, especially with Japan and South Korea right next door who will no doubt also fly in to watch.

I heard (i cant confirm) that the reason SK go to semi final in 2002 because every other team that is playing did not bring interest to SK crowd. So SK FA bribe their way throug to semi finals. (To prevent empty seats therefore financial loses).

Just watch notorious SK vs Italia in 2002.
