microsoft has a little program on their site that you can use to test which version of vista you can run flawlessly. then you get that version.

Here's a good article on Vista's performance vs Windows XP:

I wouldn't upgrade unless your system has at least 1GB of RAM and as Negative-Ion said, check Microsoft's tool to see wich version of Vista you're able to run (if your video card is good enough, you'll be able to run Ultimate :) )

Even if you have 1gb of ram I still wouldn't recommend it. My pc had 1gb of ram and Vista RC1 at one point and the performance stuck. As soon as I upgraded to 2GB I re-installed the final Vista x64 Ultimate and noticed the pc running completely smooth.

To be honest with you, Vista isn't much different than XP. The biggest difference is in the GUI (graphic user interface) basically Microsoft changed the OS to have more eye candy. Other than that there isn't anything that warrants you to upgrade, honestly... this is coming from myself who owns Vista Home Premium. Though I must say that Vista is extremely stable and very rarely crashes, which is a plus in my opinion and the only thing that would put it above XP.

The only thing I will upgrade to Vista for is DX10...and hardly and DX10 games are out now and those that are aren't that much better in DX10 than in DX9....not to mention I will wait until device drivers are more up to speed and possibly Service Pack 1 is out...I really can't see any reason to upgrade to Vista yet...especially if you have XP media center edition

Here is why i would upgrade to Vista but i'm too lazy to reinstall all my apps
    that i have in XP.

Built in calender system, i always complained about xp not having this.

Improved search features - i rarely delete files and xp's search used to take forever imo.

a real backup and restore system - on the level of Norton ghost

superfetch to handle your most frequently used programs

automatic defrag - the torrents and other downloads i go thru in a
week makes this feature very nice

a reliability monitor that really looks at how the system is operating
from a stability point of view.

Since the copy i have is Vista Business, i'll be missing out on the
multimedia features. After using Media Center i actually like what
    MS has done with multimedia.

If my XP disk died I would go with Vista cuz i would have to reinstall :)

As a CS major, I've gotta say that Windows Vista is overrated and really not worth your money. Especially if you have a laptop you might want to consider just keeping XP for a while. Comparably, Vista is a system resource whore.

Vista is a downgrade, it doesn't do shit, but slows your pc down humongously and prevents you from playing alot of games, if you're into that.

fine if Vista doesn't work for you cool, but if it works and has features for
others why dog it? you are not being objective. i showed a laundry list of
useful features. i guess folks in here have under powered systems and only
    play games?

you will all succumb eventually, muahaha muahaha muahaha

Haha, I like how all the people who have never used Vista are talking about how it's a "downgrade" and it's "overrated." Last time I checked, Vista was the opposite of overrated. Everyone hates it.

But as soon as some of it's performance problems are fixed, and new computers come with graphics cards or on-board graphics chips that can handle it no problem, you'll all be using it, and probably liking it. You're just too young to remember this thing called "XP." It was pretty much the same story for it until Service pack 2 came along.

Good try to jump on the ignorant hate bandwagon though.

that is the only reason. period. so if ur not a gamer, then stick with XP.

i personally like the GUI interface and my computer will handle it perfectly fine. im so used to it now, i'd never go back. i know ITs hate Vista but oh well.

Just like games, it doesn't seem unrealistic for an operating systems to push computers to upgrade. If your computer cant handle Vista throw another stick of RAM in it and it should be fine, if you cant afford to then well... you can always reduce the animations and tweak Vista to run faster...do some google searching... :-)

eventually everyone interested in playing games or getting new software will be forced to upgrade...just like games went XP only and stopped supporting windows 98...there will eventually be games and programs that are Vista only...the world moves on....some people found problems with XP to begin with also.

Depending on what version of Vista you get, Vista CAN have alot of usefull features..

If your going to be playing games on that computer wait -atleast- another 6 mths, So the drivers can catch up OR dual booting is allways an option ;)

In a yr or so people will start to see that vista is a better OS then XP, by far.
I have home premium and i love it. I Would never go back to XP, dual booting for the drivers though :(

    Vista > Xp

Vista is good-looking and actually quite stable and more secure than XP.

However, one thing that's really pissing me off are some programs not working in Vista properly or incompatible hardware (like the Nintendo Wi-fi USB connector, which I use my older comp with XP for).

I'm hoping some of those problems will be ironed-out eventually.

Otherwise, Vista isn't bad at all. Anyway, just about every PC you will buy now I guarantee WILL have Vista on it.

BTW, get Vista Ultimate, because it's awesome (my friend got it a week after release date by downloading *cough*watch out for the popo*cough* and I got to take a run through it).

The only thing that most people will find wrong with Vista is the interface. It's so different than the past Windows so it takes a little getting used to.

I want to get Windows Vista, but I won't get it unless I get a PC that is built for it since I remember when XP came out and I tried upgrading my PC with ME and it didn't go too well.

I'm really dying to see what new features are in Windows Movie Maker 3.

    VISTA is shit.

It runs to many kernel build DRMs to be used as a home PC. Films look like shit and music sounds bad.

Like that upgrade and pay money for the crap OS. I won't.

    agreed.

and even then, you can easily skin your XP to look like Vista without having to switch to Vista for just the new eyecandy.

My XP hardly ever crashes...so I do not understand where people are coming from when they say theirs does.

probably everything that has been available in Adobe Premiere.
