There's a lot of shootings because there's a lot of people... Later: That's not going to change unless there's a major change to police culture or gun ownership. All they had to say.

Article seemed to go back and forth on how impactful training actually is compared with the population and gun ownership glut, but this bit about training is coincidentally interesting in light of a recent thread about someone being shot by police inside of his car -

That's only a fraction of gun related homicides. The media only reports on police shootings because they generate outrage and views. It's a nothing burger. If people want guns, they better accept the fact that there's gonna be consequences to drawing gun or having a gun present during a police intervention.

Definitely, and that's not the only study I've seen with results that show correlation between changes to policies and reductions in use of force, and I think that argument shootings can't be reduced without a massive cultural shift is malarkey. There needs to be enough of a push to change certain policies, and like has happened on a few other issues, the change in attitude will come afterward.

Relatively speaking, they are. Here in Germany, police killed 14 people in 2017 (don’t have statistics for 2018), which actually represented an increase from the years prior (11 in 2016, and less than 10 per year from 2000-2015). Never understood how Americans of all people, with their government distrust and all, seem to be ok with their police being as awfully trained as they are.

It's not a "nothing burger." We should expect high standards of our police officers, who are public officials with advanced training. Police in other countries seem to be able / willing to de-escalate situations more often.

Many killed by police were unarmed, or had some other weapon other than a gun (e.g., a knife). US Police are trigger-happy.

Except it is. Are police trigger happy? Yeah, but so is American culture in general. You cant compare American police vs other countries police when it comes to during police intervention because there are too many variables to quantify, especially when it comes to culture. Police shootings aren't the major problem right now, it's mass shootings and it's everyday gun homicides. Focusing on something that only happens a fraction of time isn't going to solve the general problem which is gun violence.

Seems like our media and politicians have a special ability at getting the public wrapped up in adding a cultural narrative to everything. So, shitty police can't just be shitty police, but calling police shit has to also be an attack on American values, conservatism, white people, mayonnaise and whatever other garbage that stops people from viewing a problem with people that look like them objectively.
