What's in a name... The meaning of character and jutsu names

Want to know the meanings of the character's names and jutsu? Then this is the right thread ^_^

A day or two ago I couldn't sleep so I decided to make a list of names of all the Naruto characters and their meanings and origins. I thought maybe some of you might find this list interesting.

I also added the names of all the jutsu.

    you can find it here

great list! Now I wonder if Sakura is a jinchuriki as well. And if Chouji's older brother is that big humongous guy in Atkatsuki that we haven't seen yet.

Nice lol Sarutobi = jumping like a monkey lol I always loved his name when nidaime called him monkey. Ayame = beautifal woman.. or kill/murder/butcher... clearly she would've made a deadly ninja had she passed her acadamy test most likely. Some of them are pretty funny/interesting good job.

    Spoiler: Not Important

It shows what care and consideration were put into characters names, some names corresponding to character traits.

I wish english names had better meanings...

I mean my name means "God of War" and is roman...is like meh!

Dude, awesome. I'm far too lazy to do something like that.

The one thing I disagree on is Gai's name origin. I traced it back to Chinese, which is pretty much the inspiration for his team.

埋头 - mai tou - It means to become engrossed in something, to put yourself entirely into something. (literally, "cover up/bury the head") It's written as 埋頭, "maito", in Japanese.
盖 - gai - This means the lid of something, but is also used to describe the shell of a turtle. Its Japanese equivalent is 蓋, with the same reading.

And as I go through, I found another. Tsunade's name, if you read it in Chinese.
綱 means kind of like a guideline or an outline, something that sets a standard for how something else is carried out.
    手 is, yeah, hand.

    EDIT:
Why am I picking out all of the Chinese things? Beh. Kind of nice to not be looking at things from a Japanese perspective like usual.
Anyway, if you look at the Chinese subs of Naruto(they use 鳴人), or even use a Japanese word processor, you'll get different ways of spelling the name through kanji.

    For "naru" we have:
鳴, which is basically to make a loud noise, like scream, shout, or for a dog, bark. Pretty much any noise that's just there to be a noise, not to convey meaning, usually an attention-grabber. Kinda fits with his thing of making pointless noise to be noticed.
成, which is to become. Possibly his desire to become better and better, or his changing influence on people.

    For "to":
人 is "person". No explanations there.
戸, for "door", which pairs off nicely with 成 as the possible medium for him getting places, or causing other people to change.

In Japanese 綱 means rope or cable. and 手 is, well, hand

Wow the links are really interesting, Like the Sound Gennin 3 all having onomatopoeic names...

...about the only one I knew was the "saru" link between sarutobi and enma...
...doesn't explain Sarutobi Asuma tho, and does that make Asuma Sandaime's relative? and Konohamaru's relative too?...

    ...Weird...

    Props and reps tho!

Nah, I don't think there's a connection, since Sarutobi is Asuma's first name, while it's Konohamaru's and Sandaime's last name.

Actually, it's Asuma's family name. The Sandaime and Konohamaru don't seem to have family names. At least they have never been stated and they are not in the databooks. Sarutobi could easily be the Sandaime's family name insetad of his given name though. However this is unlikely.
