Kaiji is your best bet. Ignore anyone who mentions code geass, there’s no intense battle of wits there except for one scene at the climax. It’s all mechas and eye powers.

Kaiji is about manipulating the situation during high-stakes gambling. The artstyle is weird as fuck but once you remember the anime is about psychology, not physical fights, you won’t give a fuck how they’re drawn.

A second best would probably be no game no life. It has ridiculous deus ex machina and a lot of otakubait but considering the climate of anime circa ~2013, you take what you can get.

Manga: liar game. Read it and find out :cool

If he's talking about having similar plots then yeah code geass would be his best bet:cat. Especially over the two anime you just mentioned. I'm sure there's other though.

Code Geass is the most similar anime to Death Note.

Both of the main characters are geniuses, obtain supernatural powers (one gets a notebook, the other gets an eye power) and uses those powers to change the world based on their pov and justice. They both hide this power away from their friends and both fall down the path of darkness. Light and Lelouch p much have the same personality and character type, only difference I'd say is Light is much smarter but that's because of the genre it's based on compared to Code Geass. Code Geass is more action oriented.
