I ask this because the beginning chapters of Naruto looked different than the rest of the series. It seems there was a change around the Chunnin Exams arc?

There seems to be another change sometime in part 2, I think sometime before the war?

By the time of the VOTE battle, Kishimoto had a completely different art style than the Zabuza Arc.

I would say around every 4 or 5 years of Kishimoto working on Naruto, you can notice a major art change.

Every manga/comic that's running for this long is gonna look wildly different by the end.

Kishi started out very much drawing like Katsuhiro Otomo. But much sketchier. Then around 2003 he changed his art style to fit the anime, because he liked the way Pierrot's character designer artist guy (someone around here can provide a name I'm sure) drew his characters. Something like that. That's the biggest change. Then of course his art kept changing a little from year to year.

I feel like he moved away from doing fancy camera angles and wide angle skewed camera perspectives near the end? It looks cleaner but also a bit more boring, less dynamic. Then again, I haven't studied the later volumes' art as much as earlier stuff so I might be wrong there.

I like the 2007-2010 stretch a lot. And it's neat how you can subtly see the characters age even from early shippuuden to the end of the series, or within part 1.

(I like how this post is getting rated 'informative' when I'm just over here going "Pierrot's character designer artist guy" because I can't be bothered to look up the actual reference :catsalute)

I always thought Kishi changed his artstyle to match Norio Matsumoto's art. Remember him commenting how OP1 wowed him, but apparently it was Nishio that influenced his change.

Somewhat related. Compare the original sketch from 1998 for that Mario oneshot Kishi did, to the final version he finished in 2013. That first one is straight up Otomo's art style, the 2013 one is pretty much Obito cosplaying a mafia boy.

(This was the best quality pic I could quickly find, the sketch is also in one of the part 1 volumes of Naruto as an extra)

Right, yes, Tetsuya Nishio, that's the guy.

It only makes sense that an illustrator of a long term weekly tends to streamline and simplify his style in order to better meet deadlines. I also think that character designs are changed/tweaked as the mangaka becomes more familiar with their personalities, etc. It's fun to see just how the style changes over time.

I always thought of 2 notable shifts...

    Beginning to post chunin/invasion arc
    - major art shift -
tsunade arc to when Itachi dies
    - smaller shift / more polished -
    the rest of the series

I understand that but if we could do it before then there's no reason we can't still do it...

I'd rather less frames of higher quality then all this simplified crap.

I think the change starts during/after the chuunin exam.
