Samurai Champloo is tied in first place with Cowboy bebop. Alos the Hellsing OST (but Cd 1 only) was beautiful.

Its a rule of thumb that anime Yoko Kanno works on will be a musical masterpiece (GiTS, Wolf's Rain and the grand Cowboy Bebop)

Honorable mention goes to every compostion created by Joe Hisaishi (spirited away, Laputa: Castle In The Sky, Princess Mononoke, Nausicaa)

    Why?

Because for a change, we dont have generic J-rock/pop playing repeated riffs and drum loops. and we have brilliant composers (Yoko kanno for CB, Nujabes and Fat Jon for SC) who masterfully created an atmosphere that made the anime come to life in a more powerful and vivid manner. Any of thoe albums can be played without the need to watch the anime either, as they can span a nice twist.

But...but...what about Escaflowne (also Yoko Kanno) and Noir? Those are my two faves--they're tied :D

All of Moe's picks are great, too, but nothing can top Shadow of Doubt from Esca and Canta Per Me from Noir. Two droolworthy tracks, IMO.

And another honorable Yoko Kanno mention: the GITS SAC OST. Stand Alone Complex has some AMAZING music on there. I highly recommend all of the above.

FLCL has some awesome music. Followed by Samurai Champloo, and Cowboy Bebop.

Trigun's music isn't bad, either.....Evangelion's music is good, too.

    *looks at the above's username*

I could have swore you would say Beck OST. *shrugs*

The Rurouni Kenshin OAV OST is also amazing. Some of the best piano tracks I have ever heard from modern composers, IMO. Awesome OST.

Gundam SEED/SEED Desinty and Most Inuyasha endings.

RK's Kenshin theme flute play is also the best character related music.

    ::dodges random 20th CB rant::

Oh and, to the topic at hand.

Definately the Samurai Champloo and Cowboy Bebop OSTs. Escaflowne is pretty good too. And I liked the first and last Naruto OST too, but hey, I'm an idiot. :amuse

    ^yeah someone mentioned Kenshin.

But I like Naruto's and Getbackers has that one song I like, it's like a creepy squeely song. Also I like Bleach's music, I don't know I liked that squeaky techno thing, when Rukia jumped off the pole at ep. 1

Much love for the Yoko Kanno call :]

Series-wise, I'd have to say that from top to bottom, I've enjoyed the .hack//sign music more than any other show. FMA's music is growing on me as well. Most of it is performed by the Moscow Symphony Orchestra, and is just GORGEOUS.
