Who are the most intelligent fighters NOT known for their intelligence?

    You know who they are.

    They're the ones that use their intelligence to come out on top time and time again, yet never get recognition for it. They're the ones that seemingly look to be in a bad spot, but end up showing that they were in complete control the entire time.

    They're the ones not named Batman or Shikamaru.

    More people really should read Planetary.

    As for series terms(like the examples given) I don't think Masataka Takayanagi(Tenjou Tenge) doesn't get the credit or recognition he deserves

    I've only read 10 volumes of Jojo's Bizzare Adventure but I'd have to say Joseph Joestar owns this topic hard. This is especially true seeing as most of his enemies always assume he is stupid because of how he acts.

    Gutts is smarter than he looks. Many of his wins are thanks to wit, not skills:neutral

    But I wouldn't say intelligent though. More like clever really.

    I would say that Ball deserves some mention in here.

    Even as a twelve year old, he was coming up with newer and more inventive ways to use his single weapon, in addition to using someone's own abilities against them. When it got upgraded as he became a teenager, he basically turned his magnets into the Swiss Army Knife of O-Parts.

    Instead of just using them in the most simple ways, he uses them for movement, creating blasts of considerable power, using the surroundings of an opponent against them, and dismantling defenses.

    Goku isn't exactly famed for being smart, but he's had some pretty smart moments over the course of Dragonball and Dragonball Z.

    Elijah Snow gets a great deal of honorable mention. Of course he is a character that is known for his intelligence, what with being the inheritor to the greatest detective to ever live and all.

    Amazingly I will go with Luffy on this. Although an idiot he always seems to come up with a way of defeating his foes that seem invincible.

    With Crocodile it was water, and when he ran out of that it was his own blood, with Eneru he thought up the idea of using the ricochet of his fists to bypass mantra. With CP9 he thought up how to super heat and compress air into his organs and use it as a form of NOS allowing his body to move at a much higher rate.

    He uses every advantage he can possibly get from his DF.

    Mat isn't intelligent he is experienced. And while he isn't known for his smarts he is known as a great general to all that actually see him do his thang. That and luck augments his skill.

    Actually he's shown himself to be very intelligent (at least at some things). He figured out to use gunpowder as a weapon (or near enough) by himself. And he was an expert player at stones before he got his memories from the twisted doorway.

    The luck helps, but he doesn't depend solely on that.

    Like I said, experience. The few PoV's that we have of him actually formulating his strategies involve a form of intuiting the battles flow based off of the previous battles and fights he has been in. For example when he was planning the breaking of the seige of Cairhien he pointed out that it had great similarity to ... I think it was or Somethings gap, before hawkwing got his stride and another battle somewhere half way through the Trolloc Wars and on much the same scale. His knowledge of seafaring came from a naval assualt. He has the practical knowledge of a thousand men crammed in his head so no matter what he encounters its at least similar to what he has done before. Its why he immediately understood how to weild the Ashandarei and also why when he fights with knives he has a basic knowledge of pulmonary anatomy.

    His abilty to extrapolate what a cannonball would do and its weaknesses was nothing more than a composite understanding of what a new weapon of war would do from so much experience with war.

    I'm not saying he is stupid or even normal, he is a smart guy, but his skill in battle is not really intelligence its wisdom.

    EDIT:Oh and Stones is a matter of pattern recognition not smarts. In general champion Go players are not exceptionally brilliant and they can't quite explain why something was a good move, only that it was. Chess or Tcheren is a solved game whereas go is not.

    I have to agree with this. Luffy plays dumb which I can't understand why, but his battle instincts makes him a genius.

    Actually, quite a few shounen heroes act like idiots in day-to-day life, but are practically geniuses in battle.

    The only exception to that rule that comes immediately to mind is Kurosaki "Hack, slash, then hack some more" Ichigo.

    Superman, the dude has to constantly be thinking about how to end a fight while only using .000000000000000000001% of his power. Has to always be thinking about what could happen if he uses to much force, must be hell for the dude.

    Bart Allen: Manages to apply a library of concepts and ideas while his opponents still thinks he's a dumbass.
