Why couldn't Tatara originally "use" Kaneki?

    chapter 54 page 13

Tatara says he has no use for Kaneki because it's his left eye. What is it ever explained why he had no use for him or why do you think he didn't "need" him?

First comes to mind that since Eto's sole kakugan is her right eye not left but then why would he need to have a one-eyed ghoul with the same eye as Eto?

    Thoughts on the subject?

It could be that Tatara was not aware of the production of artificial ghouls. Having the sole kakugan in the right eye is probably the mark of a natural-born one-eye and since Kaneki was rumored to be one, he perhaps wanted to confirm the suspicions that Kanou was conducting experiments to turn humans into ghouls.

Furthermore, Tatara probably underestimated Kaneki and may have assumed an artificially created ghoul, one-eye or not, would never be close in power to the true thing (Eto). As for why he would want another ghoul like Eto, the simple reason is probably because one-eyes are extremely rare and powerful and as far as we've seen from Eto, they essentially function as one-man armies.

I don't think he necessarily meant because his Kakugan was in his left eye that he didn't need him.

It was all about power. There were rumors surrounding Kaneki tying him to Rize and him being a One-eye'd Ghoul.
Tatara at that point was trying to build up his forces so he wanted powerful recruits; Kaneki had that potential. However once he met Kaneki he saw that his eye was on the left-side, meaning Kaneki was an artificial half Ghoul not a true half-blood. He also saw that Kaneki was nowhere near as strong as Rize, despite having some of her powers. So at that point Tatara concluded Kaneki was not strong enough for him to bother recruiting him.

I don't understand as of now what Tatara's whole role in the manga is. I can't wait for it to be revealed though...
