So why would somebody even start to read this series?
What are the positive and the negative factors of this series?

Bastard!! is the guiltiest of my guilty pleasures. It's utter knuckle-dragging, amateurish, nonsense but, somehow, despite recognizing its many, many glaring faults, I'm strangely fond of it. In fact, the stupider it gets, the more I like it.

I started reading it because I heard Dark Schneider was an over-the-top badass.

    Because:
    -Gorgeous art
-It's hilarious and rarely takes itself seriously by breaking the 4th wall
-The homages to the bands, street fighter, Aladdin and various other series
    -The badassery from several characters
-The fights, some of them are awesome

The final battle looks like it's going to be epic on a Lord of Rings level scale.

    Let's see why:

    1) Main character is badass/awesome/arrogant/funny sometimes/excellent fighter. Many other awesome supporting/villain characters.

    2) Art is decent at first, then as the volumes develops, the quality on some moment rises on epic level. Thumbs up easily.

    3) Battles. Variety of skills? Power ups? Villains? What more? Uniqueness on each battle. One of Bastard's! top elements.

    4) Plot. Dark, apocalyptic, gothic, (especially in the later volumes) perfect for seinen series.

    5) Many metal/rock refferences. If you are metal/rock head you are gonna dig it more.

Summary: One of the best seinen series out there. Read it and you will not gonna regret it.

3.- Fan service of epic proportions like no other seinen

    4.- Lot of mental/rock references

5.- The main character is not an awful and stereotypical main character/hero.

6.- The main character has had like over 400 girlfriends and he fucked with every single one xD

    Epic battles etc.

It really depends on your tastes and what you're looking for in a manga

Bastard!!'s main strength lies in the fact it's very unique in the shonen genre, as it's almost more like a gag manga at times than your usual action/adventure story ala OP, Naruto or Bleach

That doesn't mean there's no drama or serious fights, but to me it's not exactly its strong point, really the main draw is that the manga doesn't take itself seriously, and you can feel that the author had a lot of fun drawing what's essentially ultimate fanservice for dungeons and dragons/heavy metal nerds

So yeah, if you want another "serious" manga with a coherent plot, complex characterization, a solid balance of power or a main character who doesn't hog all the spotlight, Bastard!! probably isn't for you

If you want something different, often nonsensical and pretty coarse, but just plain fun if you're the kind of guy who enjoys metal and the culture associated with it... Then read it

If you are burned out or in a slump with the current crop of manga, especially SJ, Bastard!! is a breath of fresh air. I actually first learned of the series through its OVA. According to what I've read, the director of the OVA was arrested so it got left on a cliff hanger. Anyone know why?
