In the English dub, Bra's name was changed to Bulla, which I both disliked and found to be very weird; why did Funimation do that? Did they think that her name was inappropriate (although neither Trunks' name or their family name, Brief, were changed), or was it simply a translation error? What does everyone else say about this?

The English dub changes a lot of unnecessary stuff.

Why do you think? The same reason Bulma isn't Bloomer and Goku's beer was changed to soda on the way to Namek.

You're asking why they opted not to call a little girl "bra" with all of the censorship that we have in the west.

Why were "Trunks" and "Brief" not changed when they also are types of underwear? Is women's underwear somehow less appropriate than men's underwear?

It wasn't for censorship. It was to match the lip flaps I think.

"Bra" is pronounced "BURA" in Japanese, and so they opted to go with a two syllable name. "Bulla".

But I do think it was unnecessary.

What do you mean by that? That is an unfair double standard.

That makes sense, except that "Buruma" became "Bulma," losing a syllable in translation.

In that case, what is it about?

I have seen sources say both translations Bulla and Bra are technically correct so really I think it is personal choice more than anything.

Nope. Japanese syllables always end in a vowel except for -n. Example: Gomen

Toriyama's naming conventions have always been stupid. A family named after underwear? Fuck out with that shit.

It wasn't Disney enough and it's too obvious a reference to women's underwear. Bulma kinda gets away with it because an English speaker wouldn't immediately think of bloomers by hearing her name.

Trunks is a guy so there's ABSOLUTELY nothing sexual or un-Disney about his name :ufdup

Her name was actually "SSJ Blue Goku> SSJ Blue Vegeta" but changed it to Bulla to make it less time consuming.
