In which Nodens easily kills a bunch of Nyarlathoteps hunting horrors, who themselves tank the destruction and creation of entire universes (possibly).

Drugs in Lovecraft aren't just hallucinagenics, but ways of expanding the human mind.

For more infomation, see the Hounds of Tindalos, and check out the Hounds while you're at it.

Still think it's just a delusion?

(The last one wasn't written by Lovecraft, but I believe it's part of the Lovecraftian cannon. The writer, Frank Belknap Long, was friends with Lovecraft. Lovecraft himself directly refers to them in The Whispers in Darkness.)

This shows us that in the world of the Lovecraft mythos, drugs aren't just hallucinogenics, but methods of opening up doorways to the past and to the future, where you can see things like the end of the world, or get attacked by rabid dog monsters that attack through angles from a higher spatial dimension. No doubt there are many other examples too.
